Avalokiteśvara (Guanyin) in the center of this mural, adorned with gold leaf, is the Buddhist bodhisattva associated with compassion. She resides in Cave 57 of the Mogao Caves, also known as Caves of the Thousand Buddhas. Guanyin, her Chinese name, is short for Guanshiyin, which means “The One Who Perceives the Sounds of the World.”

Her stance and expression brings to mind a “firefly”, a short poem of Tagore: Love’s gift cannot be given, it waits to be accepted.
