Felicity stepped out of the way of a dagger flying toward her that someone threw near her. “What the hell is your problem?! Don’t you know not to throw these when there’s someone near the target in the arena? Especially if you don’t know how to fuckin’ throw them.”

“Uh, I know how to throw knives,” they replied, eyebrows raised. “Maybe you shouldn’t stand by the targets.”

Kwame does this thing where they exist and Jacob knows happiness for as long as they’re around. It’s becoming a problem and he knows it, but who cares about that right now because they are talking to him and he needs to respond.·“I’m good, all things considered.” When they spoke up about the information on the flyer, Jacob smiled.·“You think so? That is… nice isn’t the word? Encouraging? Refreshing? All of those things at once.”

Kwame laughed.·“That’s good to hear!” The two of them had a unique sort of bond, but Kwame liked to think that had they not had to save Jacob from their father’s punishment, they still would get along. If only they didn't always feel the sudden urge to be more formal around the other demigod. “So tell me about this club.”

Jacob was, for the first time in a long time, no wearing anything remotely revealing around camp. His closet had recently expanded and he was trying out new clothes– recommendations from Brent, Macey, and a variety of others on what might be good for him. It felt nice to actually be building a sense of style. The child of Nike was busy putting up flyers around camp, trying to make sure they were in a spot that people could see. He was heading back towards his stack when he saw someone standing close by. “Hey,” he calls out with a smile. “You mind handing those to me?”

Kwame was frowning at the book in their hands, so engrossed in the text that they almost didn’t hear Jacob. When they glanced over their shoulder and saw the son of Nike, though, they grinned. “Jacob, how are you?” It was only then they realized he had asked for the flyers so they quickly scooped them up and walked closer. “This looks interesting,” they said as they scanned the top page.

Jacob stood at his closest and stared inside. He would have been comfortable in any of the outfits, any of the clothes he decided to put on. There was something about the lack of clothes right now though that made him feel more free– less suffocated. “Then I think I’ll stay like this,” he says before heading back to his bed to take a seat. “I owe you a thank you – like one so big that I don’t think I can put it into words so I don’t really want to try.” A long pause. “How are you adjusting – to the modern world?”

Kwame shrugged. “The fact that you’re alive and thriving is enough for me. No need for a thank you.” They sit in the nearest chair, twisting open the water bottle. They turned the cap over in one hand and shrugged, eyeing the water without drinking. “I’ve seen the world change from afar, so I’m not too lost. Although experiencing it first hand is pretty strange. Music has taken quite a journey.”

“No such thing,” at least when it concerned Kwame this was true. “Have a seat. There is plenty of open space.” Jacob moved to the fridge in his room to grab two waters, passing one over to them as he headed back to grab a seat of his own. A pause and he realized that he was shirtless. “Oh shit. I should probably put some clothes on.” He headed over to his closet. “I’m – fine? Better than I was when you first found me, way better than that. Things are still weird sometimes though.”

They wondered if Jacob always had this nervous energy. Kwame hadn’t seen much of him since their return, so they couldn’t say if this was typical or due to their presence. They accept the water bottle and smirk. “Only if you want,” they replied, then quickly realized how that sounded. They cleared their throat. “If you’d be more comfortable.”

If he was being honest with himself, the Nike cabin was a lonely place. There was nobody else inside of the cabin and it sort of just felt like something dead or something dying most of the time. It wasn’t to say that Jacob didn’t enjoy the solitude, because he did, and it was impossible to imagine having a sibling at this point considering how him the whole space was now. 

The knock at the door caught him off guard – nobody came to visit his cabin these days. Macey or Brent generally texted first and considering he was in the midst of texting them when the knock happened, it couldn’t have been them. Jacob rose out of bed in just a pair of boxers and moved to the door. 

“What do you wan– Oh shit.” He stared at Kwame for a few moments, not exactly sure what to say to the person who’d saved him the underworld. “I didn’t know you were coming to camp – I– come in?”

“Is this a bad time?” they asked, almost at a laugh. Clearly it wasn’t, as Jacob invited them in almost immediately. They nod politely and step through the doorway. “I also didn’t know I was coming to camp, truthfully. I was curious to see how it’s changed, though. And I wanted to check in on you. I hope you don’t mind.”

Kwame had spent so much time working for their father, they were woefully behind on culture. About four decades ago, they had stopped bothering on staying in the loop. So they spent the first several weeks of their “retirement” catching up on fourty years worth of music and movies. Better late than never. 

Holed away in their cabin, they completely forgot about their plan to find and check in on Jacob. He seemed to be doing, relatively, pretty well. Still, they might as well follow up. Better late than never.

Kwame knocked on the door of the Nike cabin, quickly checking their reflection in the window before Jacob answered. Be warm. Smile nice. No more grim reaper.
