HAPPY NEW YEAR (One more time)!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
At the top of my Christmas List this year is Stuart Hughes' iPad 2 Gold History Edition. I guarantee that whatever you're imagining as you read those words is not even remotely as ridiculous awesome as the real thing. Solid gold back? Of course. Diamond encrusted Apple logo? Sure. But how about a front bezel made of a combination of 75 million year old Ammolite stone AND BONE SHAVINGS OF A TYRANNOSAURUS REX?! Touché, Sir Hughes. I think I'll pick one (of the two available) up for purchase, and call it an iOS developer's business expense.
I sincerely hope this means that we are entering into a wonderful new world filled with daily temporary tattoos. We'll work on getting a Kwiqet logo up in their collection sometime soon...
So we're all familiar with Frank Gehry's work (if you're not, go now!), but I never saw this coming. He's designed the official 2012 Grammy poster. Check it out! Let us know what you think.
Have you guys ever seen any of his buildings in person? I've seen a few, the Loyola Law School, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Ray and Maria Stata Center[25], IAC Building, Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health[36], , Santa Monica Place and last, but not least, New York by Gehry at Eight Spruce Street[39]. All so beautiful! I think my favorite might be the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas. What’s your favorite?
Ice Cube is an American rapper, actor, director and producer.
Lets take a trip with Ice Cube as he takes you around LA and gives his take on the Eames House!
Nothing crazy, nothing groundbreaking, but extremely helpful. I'll buy a set. Am I the only one who loves pancakes??
This plate ($45 for a set of 2) was designed by Jon Wye.
"After a lifelong love affair with breakfast, Wye pin-pointed the crux of satisfaction: syrup. Designed with a raised edge that gently slopes the plate toward the diner and an ingenious reservoir for pooling loose syrup, this plate was made for slicing, dipping and delighting in each bite of pancake goodness."
Hidden Radio (and BlueTooth Speaker)
So everyone is buzzing about this Kickstarter project, Hidden Radio. These guys have surpassed their goal on Kickstarter with this awesome design. It's a bluetooth speaker, radio, and the speaker is a giant volume knob! Congratulations John + Vitor!

Design flashback: Today we go back to the year of 1956 to remember one of the most iconic modern styles of design, the Eames Lounge (670) and Ottoman (671). Released in 1956 after being developed for several years, this classic design has been in production since its release and mimicked by many designers.
I don’t need to give more info on the lounge chair, you know how to wiki something. But I will ask, have you ever seen one of these beauts in person? And if so, were you brave enough to sit in it? These chairs had a truly remarkable design and surprisingly were extremely comfortable. Whenever the company starts to make a significant amount of money, I will have this in my new apartment. It may be the only thing I can afford for the next two years, but there’s nothing wrong with just having an Eames lounge chair and ottoman in the middle of an empty room, right?!
So, last night I was lucky enough to represent the whole Kwiqet team at the NJ Tech Meetup, where we took home the Audience Choice Award. We won by an overwhelming amount on a pretty competitive night (close to 200 people were in attendance/voting for the winner...), and it feels good to garner the respect of so many of our peers in the start-up community.
The good feeling I have is not just about the trophy, though--it's about working on a great product, a great idea, with the best team in the biz. Have a great weekend, folks!
P.S.--this trophy used to be a ping-pong award in its previous incarnation. Go know.
There's something really obnoxious about this, until, you know, it kicks in with that falsetto hook. And the dude who wraps about exit strategies spits that fire.
FINALLY! We've been waiting for this design for a while, especially Dan. He always burns his fingertips!
"We came up with the idea for the Match Candleholder when trying to light a tealight candle and constantly burning our fingers," say the designers.
GOOD MORNING!
Have a good Monday morning everyone!
Apps We Love - Carcassonne
As the lead iOS developer at Abextra (and as a general tech-obsessed software-obsessed UI/UX-obsessed Apple junkie fanboy), I'm constantly (and I do mean constantly) scouring the iOS App Store for the latest and greatest apps. We here at Abextra are always looking to connect with and support our fellow mobile (and web) startups, so I thought I'd start a reoccurring segment on our blog in which I (and hopefully others from the Abextra team) feature some of our favorite iOS apps (and maybe even a website or two, if they're really impressive). I play my fair share of games, I am in no way too cool for social networks, and I'm always looking for new ways to put my iDevices to good productive use, so you can expect a wide variety of products and services to be featured here.
First up? The app that I probably open most frequently on my iPhone (and my iPad, for that matter) - Carcassonne, by those fine German folks at TheCodingMonkeys. First off, if you don't know what Carcassonne is, you're missing out on (in my opinion) one of the best board games out there. It's easy to learn, quick to play, deeply strategic, and honestly rather beautiful! Go find yourself a friend who has played, or just buy yourself a copy, or better (and more cheaply) yet buy the app!
I don't just love Carcassonne for iOS because I love the game though. The app is pretty much a perfect implementation, and an all-around fantastic mobile gaming experience. The visual design is beautiful, and the gameplay is quick, intuitive, and seamless. You can play online with your friends (receiving notifications whenever it is your turn), or pick up a quick game with a (usually) well-matched random opponent (thanks to a solid player rating system). At the end of a game, you can see a great visual summary of the scoring throughout the course of play (and figure out why Dan Bretl keeps beating you every time). Add in the fact that it is a universal app (and feels / looks even better on iPad), a creative take on a single player "Solitaire" mode, and the promise of (hopefully in the near future) releasing some of the many Carcassonne expansions, and you have one stellar iOS product.
I will, however, offer a few pieces of constructive criticism... (The rest of this post is more for TheCodingMonkeys than anybody else.) First, the app needs a bit of refinement in the area of game invitations. When you start a game with friends, an invitation gets sent to each of those friends. You can't actually start the game until everyone accepts. This makes sense, but once you're a regular iOS Carcassonne player, you hardly ever find yourself back on the screen where you would actually see (and thus accept) those invitations, so games often sit around pending for days. The reason you don't find yourself back on this screen is because the app has a great way to quickly jump from one game to the next (in which it is your turn), but that notification / jump system does not include pending game invites. This seems like it would be an easy thing to fix.
My second major suggestion stems from the visual beauty inherent to the game of Carcassonne. One of the things I love most about the game is that playing it is a creative act, in that you are working with (against) your friends (hated opponents) to quilt together castles and roads in an expanding French countryside. The app has a fun feature where you can share the results of a game, but what it shares is merely a screenshot of the scoring summary - without a final screenshot of the game board! This is a missed opportunity. I'm not sure if there is a technical reason why they left this out, but I hope they work to include it in the future. I would love to have a Facebook album full of all of my past Carcassonne boards and their final scores. (It has probably become grossly apparent through this post how much of a board game nerd I truly am...)
Learn the game. Play it often. Buy the app. Support the fantastic efforts of TheCodingMonkeys. Our hats go off to them. As an iOS developer who loves good design, I wish I could have worked with them on this product. (And not just because they have been wildly successful in the App Store...)
IT'S FINALLY HERE!!!! Jawbone UP
The easy-to-wear bracelet keeps track of your activity and sleep, and syncs with an iPhone app and web site to help you better understand and manage your health and wellness by reminding you (with vibration) to get up and stretch or eat something. It also offers programmable challenges—exercising a minimum amount of time per day, for example—and a layer of social sharing and collaboration, similar to those you can use on Nike Plus, for motivation from friends or wellness professionals.
You can see all of the details on the UP at Jawbone, and order it directly for $100. It's available in several colors, and we anticipate, as with other Jawbone products, that certain retailers may have exclusive colors or limited editions. Retail distribution arrives in the next few days at Apple Stores, Target, Best Buy and AT&T.
Dan (our iOS developer) and I will be at the Apple store early Sunday morning! I'm getting the red!! What color will you get?
This isn't Silicon Valley. This is New York City, home of the new tech world. This is truly an incredible place to be. To all our fellow NYC-based startups!
Happy Halloween!!
Hope you all had a fun and safe Halloween weekend. (And if the pumpkin above looks like you, feel better soon...)
