It didnât really take any thinking before he could come up with a response.
âThat sounds terrible.â Getting near Kakuya was bad enough, but close enough to put the doll inside her or take it out was probably suicidal. âBut at least youâre not killing anyone. Hope it lasts a while.âÂ
A western dollmaker sounded unlikely for Kakuya at first, but who knew if they had a thing for the traditional aesthetic. Someone creating twisted dolls with some spiritual presence was already more real than he wanted it to be, but doll spirits with curses like thatâŠ
Well, the maker was probably human, so Akira wouldnât mind getting thrown back in time if it gave him the chance to break their jaw.
âI sealed Kakuya in a mirror with a doll about the size of my hand,â he explained, briefly raising his left. âTakes some spiritual power, but she should be in there for the next ten years. I have no idea why any of it works.â Better to say that now than get expectant questions about it.Â
ââŠWhatever happens ten years from now, Iâll deal with it and do it again.â She wasnât just going to throw it out of the mirror and wait for him to give it back, was she.
âAt least youâre not killing anyoneâ is a stab to the gut, but he tries not to let that show. He may as well have, after all.Â
He musters a âI hope so too,â with a weak laugh.
Now, hearing about Kakuyaâs sealing perks him back up, if only a little. Using a doll to seal a doll? Well, he supposes that technically a nenjibutsu could be counted as a doll too, so itâs actually more of a similarity than a difference. The biggest curiosity is the 'in a mirrorâ part. Of course he has a million questions, but if Kijima says he doesnât know, then thereâs not much point in pressing the issue.
âTen years, huh...â
He wonders if Maryâs seal will last that long. Whatâs more, the phrase âdo it againâ worries him.
Sitting and waiting, unsure of what will happen when Mary wakes up. Unsure of how many more people sheâll hurt before he can stop her again. Surely Kijima has similar anxieties about Kakuya, right?
âItâs terrifying, isnât it? Feeling like weâre on a time limit with such horrible stakes...â He poses the statement as less of a question, and more of a fact of their mutual situation. He takes a sip of his now significantly cooler coffee as he gives Kijima a concerned gaze. âEven without the mark, I still feel like Maryâs curse is just... Hanging over me. You know what I mean?â
Yeah, asking that is kind of pointless. He knows it is. But... Just some sort of confirmation that heâs not alone in his fears would be nice.
