I have just finished watching season 2 of age of youth and i HAD to write about it because never in my - short - experience of dramas have I fell in love so hard with a slice-of-life drama. I’ve watched a few, liked a few, but overall I always felt that the characters and stories were just OTT. I started AOY accidentally but got hooked in a way I haven’t been in a very long time. So, my 2 cents thought on the whole thing (be ready, i’m literally writing a novel at this point lmao):
- I liked Season 2 better than Season 1 BUT I have so so much love for the 1st season regardless.
- It gives such a healthy picture of friendship, and how people with very different personalities can find a common ground and build so strongly on it. I think the key thing here is that none of the housemates have healthy friendships (girl friendships, that is) on the outside as Season 2 shows.
- It tackles some incredibly interesting topics: domestic abuse (I saw somewhere that Ye Eun was apparently raped, as far I as I can tell, she wasn’t, but anyway), insecurities, how memories can get twisted, how life is all shades of grey, how you can sometimes lie if it is for the greater good etc.
- I loved the slice of life piece because for the first time ever in a drama, I could relate to absolutely every single one of them, understand the challenges they were facing and how they came the other way stronger than ever.
- I am rooting for Eun Jae and Heimdall, here, I said it.
- Don’t even speak about Ji Won and Sung Min, I am still gutted, although I do feel that we had enough information to imagine their love story in our head. Plus they ended up married with a girl so I am fine with that.
- I loved Kang Unnie’s cameos in season 2. She was my favourite in season 1 and I did miss her a lot - especially because I don’t really like Eun, she makes me feel a bit “meh, whatevs”.
- A big shout out to Yoon Sunba(b)e, the best motherly figure this household could ever dream of, as shown in the apple-picking episode.
It is going to take me a while to recover from the show and actually move on, and I guess at the end of it all, this is what drama watchers all wish for when they start a new one.
Here’s to our Belle Epoque girls, and with or without a Season 3, I will love them all just the same.
