Word count: 738

Your first time going to Starkiller Base, you severely underestimated its frigid climate. “Take an extra jacket,” Kylo Ren had told you, “because the planet’s colder than you would think.” Maybe you shouldn’t have responded with crossing your arms and sticking your tongue at him.

Now, you were crossing your arms to stave away the shivers while your teeth were chattering, talking to other First Order personnel out in the snow.

“Chief, your reason for visiting Starkiller base?” An officer asked you, face half-covered with a scarf, and holding a data pad in gloved hands.

“T-There’s vital r-repairs t-that, uh, need to be d-done on the oscillator b-bridge,” you stammered. “Specially r-requested by the G-General b-because, um, he needs all the other l-leads on the Finalizer.”

“And the Commander?”

You shifted your gaze to Kylo Ren, who stood absolutely, positively stock-still at your side. And silent.

“He’s…” you began, biting down on your bottom lip. You had a plan to do these repairs on the oscillator bridge. A ridiculous plan. You weren’t sure how the Force works, but when you proposed the plan to Kylo Ren, he said he could do it. Who needs droids when the Chief Engineer of the Finalizer has Kylo Ren? You straighten your posture. “He’s h-helping.”

With a nod, the First Order officer slipped past both you and Kylo Ren and headed toward the transport shuttle to the star destroyer. When the two of you were alone, Kylo Ren turned to you, took off his cowl, and draped it around your shoulders and head.

“Take this,” the mechanical voice of the helmet told you. “It’s cold.”

“It’s not cold,” you said.

“You’re shivering.”

“I won’t be when we’re inside.”

“Oh, really?” Even though Kylo Ren’s expression is concealed behind the helmet, you can practically see his smug grin as he headed toward the indoor command center. “The base doesn’t have heating yet. Keep the cowl on; you’ll get sick otherwise.”

The oscillator bridge was, as the General told you, not functional. In fact, half of it was missing. The original plan was for droids to fix it before you repaired the oscillator’s core, but the fact of the matter remained was that if the oscillator’s core wasn’t repaired as soon as possible, Starkiller Base may collapse in on itself.

“Okay,” you murmured to Kylo Ren, facing him with boxed shoulders. “I think I’m ready. I trust you to not… drop me into the abyss.”

Kylo Ren nodded, once. “It will be easier if you sit.”

He sat on his haunches, and you sat at the edge, just before the half-finished bridge branches off from the floor, legs crossed.

“Stay still,” Kylo added, “and no shivering. When you do your work, be careful. It’s combustible.”

“I know,” you said, as your body starts to lift and move ever-closer to the vast empty space between the floor and the oscillator’s core. “Can I talk? It’s easier if I talk.”

“Yes,” Kylo said. He, too, was motionless in concentrating on using the Force to move you to the pedestal.

“You must be awfully confident that you won’t drop me.”

“I am,” Kylo admitted. “I wouldn’t do this if I thought there was a chance you would come to harm.”

In a couple of seconds, you were on the pedestal that held all of the oscillator’s fine tech, and you broke out into a large smile, waving at Kylo Ren from across the abyss. He waved back, sternly.

“That was so cool,” you said, getting to work on the structure. Your voice echoes across the room, so raising your voice isn’t necessary. “This won’t take long. Just a quick re-wiring should do it. Did Hux tell you that this whole place would blow up if the wiring wasn’t right? Probably not, but— now you know.”

Running a forefinger along the various-colored wires in the core, you turned back to face Kylo Ren in the same sitting position you were in before, and keep your hands folded tight in your lap as he drifted you across the trench again and back to his side.

“Well done,” Kylo told you.

“It wouldn’t have been possible without you, Kylo,” you said. You stared up into the visor of the helmet, a grin dancing on your lips.

Without asking, you know what Kylo Ren wanted. You stood on the toes of your feet and pecked a kiss on his helmet’s muzzle.

The First Order is crumbling and Kylo Ren knows it’s his fault.

He paces around his room, boots clanking on metal tiling with each step. You sit at his desk with your fingers leaping around your computer’s keyboard. When Kylo Ren stops in his footsteps, your brow furrows, and you spin the chair around to face him.

“Did you figure something out?” you ask.

“I know what we have to do,” Kylo Ren mumbles, eyes unblinking. “I know what you have to do.”

You bring your legs up on the chair’s surface to sit cross-legged, and fold your hands in your lap. “Me? I can’t just take on the entire Resistance by myself, Kylo. I’m not even First Order. I’m just a slicer from the Outer Rim you thought would be useful to hire for one of your past missions. That’s all.”

“But you’ve been more than that,” he says.

You lean forward, grinning. “Because I’m pretty?”

“No.”

“So I’m not pretty?”

“I didn’t mean— you are, but I meant instead that—“

You snort laughing. Kylo Ren’s cheeks redden, and he takes a seat at the end of his twin-sized bed. You drop a leg from your chair to roll it up close to him. “Whatever you’re planning, Kylo, I can’t do it.”

“How much do you want to be paid?” Kylo asks. His gaze finds your hands, and he takes them into his own, running his thumb over your skin. “I can pay you as much as you want.”

“How can I propose a price if I don’t know the job?” you ask, with a grin. You wiggle free of Kylo’s hands and make his palms face the ceiling so you can trace the lines on his skin.

Kylo Ren pouts. When his eyes are half-lidded like they are now, you know he’s fighting away sleep.

Things have changed so much since Supreme Leader Snoke died. Most First Order personnel were not celebrating. Most did not like Kylo Ren in the first place, and would not have Kylo, out of everyone, succeed Snoke. Loyalties were splitting: Hux, who was in charge of the fleet, would do anything in his power to get Kylo Ren off the throne. With Phasma dead, a surge of stormtroopers have to be sent to reconditioning daily because they decided to take inspiration from the defect FN-2187.

Above it all, Kylo Ren was never meant to be a supreme leader of anything.

“I want you,” Kylo says, “to slice into the Resistance’s tech for all of their defense codes.”

“I—“

“And the First Order’s,” he finishes.

“I understand why you might want the Resistance’s codes,” you mutter, “but you can just ask for the First Order’s, you know.”

“No.” Kylo Ren shakes his head. “Not for this. They can’t know. You always said you wanted this war to end, but didn’t want any part of it.”

You nodded, quietly, stilling, as Kylo Ren leaned forward to kiss your forehead. “Kylo, if I get caught…”

“You won’t,” he tells you, “but please be careful.”

Taking a sharp breath, you close your hands tight around Kylo’s. “You’re throwing away your title of Supreme Leader for nothing. Why do you want this?”

“I’m doing it for you,” Kylo Ren says in a whisper, “and I never wanted the title. I just didn’t have anywhere else to go. And now I do.”

You manage a smile. “You’re going to hate the Outer Rim.”

“Will I?” Kylo Ren hums. “The Resistance, the First Order— we’re going to kill it all. You and me,” he continues.

“Kiss?” you ask, moving your hands to his shoulders. “For good luck.”

Kylo tilts his head, lifts your chin with his thumb, and presses a soft kiss to your lips. “Good luck.”

38. “I like your laugh.”

Word count: 767

It has been two years since the First Order designated a commander for its military, and not once have you seen what he looks like. Stormtroopers like you were allowed to, when not on duty, walk around sans helmet, and most took that opportunity— but your commander never took off his helmet. You haven’t even seen a sliver of skin; Commander Ren could be an alien, for all you knew. What the hell did he look like, behind the silver-lined visor?

The small concern of yours didn’t resurface until this particular moment: you were gathering your breakfast rations in the cafeteria with the rest of your ‘trooper squadron when you saw your commander, hood-down, holding a cup of black caf in his gloved hands.

You stared. And stared.

“Is there an issue, ‘trooper?” The helmet’s low rumble asked you.

“Not really, sir, but I couldn’t help but wonder…” You paused, to take a breath. That was not enough. You grabbed the coffee pot’s handle and clumsily sloshed the drink into a mug of your own, reaching for the powdered cream and sugar. “I don’t suppose you can drink that, with your mask and all.”

“I will,” Kylo Ren replied. The visor leveled with your messy handiwork of stirring. “My eating habits are none of your concern.”

“I know it’s not really any of my business, but a lot of the ‘troopers are under the impression that—“ you lowered your voice— “that you don’t eat at all, commander. So I was just curious.”

“That’s a silly thing to assume. Do you believe it?”

“No,” you said, “because you’re holding caf. So obviously you eat.”

You could have sworn that a sigh came from behind the helmet. You gathered your breakfast tray in one hand and your coffee mug in the other.

“What is your department, ‘trooper?” Kylo Ren asked you.

You froze. “Uh,” you sighed. “You know, I have to eat breakfast before I—“

“Sanitation,” Kylo Ren muttered. The back of your head stung, but the feeling frittered away just as quick as it came. “Why is there a sanitation department? The Finalizer has its own cleaning droids.”

“Because the General deemed it necessary, sir?” you answered, eyebrow quirked. “I mop the floors.”

“Oftentimes,” Kylo continued, “General Hux is wrong. Were you trained for sanitation?”

“No, I was trained to be a technician. But the sanitation department needed an extra member because FN-2187 deserted, and I was transferred over from the Supremacy.”

“Curious.”

Before Kylo Ren walked away, he left his full coffee mug on the cafeteria sideboard. You picked it up in your already-full hands, risking dropping your entire breakfast tray now with a drink of your own balancing atop it, and intended to go after your commander.

Seriously, there’s no one you know who walks faster than him.

After breakfast, when you get to work, your supervisor stood in front of the supplies closet, datapad in his hands. He did not look up to speak to you. “It’s your lucky day, ‘trooper,” he said. “You’re getting transferred back to the Supremacy, effective tomorrow morning.”

“What?” you murmured. “What department?”

Your now-former supervisor looked up from his device. “Tech,” he said. “Enjoy the day off. You won’t be getting another one soon.”

A bright smile bloomed on your face. You nodded, and, seeing that the hallway was near-empty, you dashed down it and passed a couple of droids, back to the cafeteria. You picked up Kylo Ren’s discarded (yet still full, and surprisingly warm) coffee mug from the sideboard, and made your way to the commanding officers’ halls.

One of the rooms was designated ‘Kylo Ren’ in Aurebesh. You gave the door a swift couple of knocks. A young man opened the door. You stood on your toes, trying to look over his shoulder.

“Hello! Is Commander Ren here?”

The young man cocked an eyebrow. “You’re talking to him.”

“Oh… oh! You’re— you’re—“

“I’m what?”

“Human!” you said.

“So I am,” Kylo said.

You thrust the mug to him. As Kylo took it, his fingers brushed over yours, and it made you flinch away with a twitch of a smile. “You left this,” you told your commander. “And I wanted to say thank you, for… helping me get my old job back on the Supremacy.”

“You enjoyed that job more than mopping floors,” Kylo said, “and the transfer will inconvenience Hux.”

You giggled, hiding your smile behind a hand. “Hux deserves it, doesn’t he?”

“I suppose he does.” Kylo Ren turned a quarter circle on his heel, cocksure grin easing on his lips. “I like your laugh.”

Following the destruction of Starkiller base, all First Order personnel was under pressure. Work hours increased. Dinnertime rations decreased. Amenities and luxuries were at an all-time-low. Most of all, your secret relationship with Kylo Ren was getting harder and harder to keep.

It used to be that he would catch you in empty hallways while you were on the way to dropping off paperwork to the General of the Finalizer. He would have breakfast with you in your office, and accidentally run into you at the almost-always empty observatory deck.

Now you were busy with work 24/7. 

With General Hux in-and-out of the Finalizer on trips to the Supremacy, you were left under charge of management from time to time in addition to your already-busy job. You’ve got the whole of the bridge reporting to you, your engineering department, god-damn medical and security and—

Everyone!

Late at night, the blast doors to your quarters hissed open. You turn on your side, palming your nightstand for the lamp switch. Kylo Ren stood in your doorway, helmet under his arm.

“I haven’t talked to you in a week,” he said.

“I know,” you told him. “It’s been busy.”

Kylo looked… different. Beaten. Tired. Rumors had it that he lost a battle to the defect stormtrooper FN-2187 and a random desert scavenger. A black, adhesive bandage extended across his face and neck, and his cloth armor had to be sewed shut.

You sat up, eyes still half-shut. “I don’t think now is the best time, Kylo. I’m exhausted, you’re exhausted—“

“Then when?” Kylo countered.

“I don’t like this any more than you do.”

“Don’t you?” Kylo took a step forward into your quarters, boots heavy on the metal-tiled flooring. “Every time I see you, it’s, I’m busy or Not now.”

Your brows furrowed. You clutched the edge of the duvet. “As if you weren’t like that when you were looking for the map to Skywalker,” you hissed. “You know what you always said to me? It’s urgent, I have to leave, I don’t know when I’ll be back.”

“There was a difference. It was important.”

“So you’re saying my job’s not important,” you murmured, curling back into your blanket. “Maybe you should have told me that before we started seeing each other.”

“I’m sorry,” Kylo muttered. “I didn’t mean—“

“Get out of my quarters.” Your throat bobbed. Tears came to your eyes, and stung falling down your cheeks.

“Please don’t cry,” Kylo said, hardly a whisper. He came closer, and put his gloved hands to either side of your face, thumbs wiping away tears as they came. “Don’t cry.”

“Get out,” you repeated, shrugging Kylo away, pulling up the duvet to act as a tissue.

Kylo Ren thinned his lips, and boxed his shoulders as he took in a deep, trembling breath. He turned to leave.

“And Kylo?” you called.

He dipped his head in a small nod, and you reached a hand forward for your lamp switch.

“Don’t come back,” you said, before shutting off the lights.

The next day, you stewed over your words. You stewed over Kylo Ren’s words. Both stung. You still went about business as usual; you felt you had no other choice. But it didn’t feel the same. You used to enjoy walking in empty hallways if it meant there was a change you could run into Kylo Ren, and used to enjoy working directly with the combat operations department if it means you can address him as Commander Ren and almost giggling to yourself because no one else knew the truth about you and him.

But you told Kylo Ren not to come back to you, and he respected that. So it was you that was going to have to go to him.

You went to his quarters after your shift was over, hand hovering over the PIN keypad. Hesitating, you punch in the combination. It clicked; he hadn’t changed it.

As the doors slide open, you make eye contact with him, and straighten your posture. “What are you doing, Kylo?” you ask.

“Getting ready to leave for the Supremacy,” Kylo said, simply.  

You play with your fingers, in front of you. “Oh, um… can we talk, before you go?” you ask. “About what I said yesterday.”

Kylo nods.

“When I told you not to come back, I didn’t… I didn’t mean it like that. I was mad because…” You took in a breath. “Because what you told me made it seem like my job’s not important. That I’m not important, that I don’t belong here— that I’m just military fodder.”

“No. You’re important,” Kylo said. “Without you, the Finalizer would have fallen long ago. But you’re not happy. Hux took you from a job you loved and left you on this star destroyer to do nothing but maintain it. I shouldn’t have said it the way I did. I didn’t want to hurt you.”

You scrunch your nose.

“Hux is a crinked-up…”

“… sleemo…” Kylo finished for you, trailing off. He opened his arms, slowly, hesitantly.

A smile burst on your face, as you flew into his arms. “A karking hutt-spawned…”

“… son of a blaster,” Kylo said. He had to leave for the Supremacy soon, he knew. He squeezed you tight, and picked you up so that your feet hovered just above the ground. If he was smiling before, it had gone. “I’m going to miss you,” he murmured.

You ran your fingers back and forth over the ridged fabric on his back. “Please come back soon,” you tell him.

I have a (probably) interesting story!! When I first learned to drive 4 hmywars ago, I was driving home from seeing a movie late a night. The street lights were burnt out on the street I was on and I didn't see a guy walking down the middle. I braked hard and he came running full speed towards me. He jumped into my hood and ran over the top, disappearing into the night. I almost peed myself.

14. “Can I have this dance?”

Word count: 334

“Can I have this dance?”

You quirk an eyebrow at a very silly-looking Ben Solo, who bows to you with one open hand extended and another behind his back and holding the hilt of his lightsaber.

“Depends. Are you going to go easy on me?”

You take your own lightsaber from your belt, igniting and flourishing it.

“No,” Ben tells you. “Why would I? Your skill equals mine.”

“Then let’s dance,” you say, “and we’ll see.”

With Ben’s weapon and yours both ignited, it, apart from the moonlight smoothing down from above, is the only light. Your footsteps glide across the grass as you begin to circle each other. As Ben spins his ‘saber, you advance, putting on a quiet offense. He moves into one parry after the next, ‘sabers humming as they come in contact.

“Do you take constructive criticism?” Ben pants.

“Do you?” You ask. “You haven’t followed up on a single counter!”

“You haven’t even tried to strike me where I’m vulnerable,” Ben calls.

“You haven’t even tried to attack me! Not once!” You call back.

The next time your lightsabers clash, Ben moves to catch a glimpse of you. You do the same, an eyebrow raised. After half-a-beat of a second, Ben leans forward, steals a kiss, disengages his lightsaber, and runs.

“Hey,” you murmur, fingers ghosting across your own lips. You return your lightsaber to your belt and begin running after Ben over the rolls of hills, under the bright of the moon. “Hey!”

You don’t have to catch up to him. Ben stops for you, hands folded in front of him, a sly smile plastered on his face.

“What’s the matter?” he asks.

“Nothing,” you say, “but I want a proper kiss. Pretty please. Before Master Skywalker finds out we’re up past curfew.”

Ben’s smile grows wider. “You’ll have to catch me, first. For real, this time,” he says, and begins dashing away again.

“Ben, I said ‘pretty please!’” you hiss under your breath, breaking out in a sprint.
