Hi! My name is Key/Jess and I am the ‘mod’ of @shadowfoxsilver who runs this blog dedicated to recording scams and occasionally promoting my art here to interrupt doomscrolling. While I am far from an expert in spotting scams I try my best to provide easily accessible information regarding what they are and how to spot them during your daily tumblr blogging. This work is all supplied for free but feel free to support me on my ko-fi!

All information for scams are built around personal experience or what I’ve gathered from my own research. If you’re submitting a scam account please make sure to state why it’s a scammer! Also make sure to search my tags first to make sure your question hasn’t already been answered about a scam.

How it starts

Are you someone looking to commission artwork from an artist but you don’t know where to look? You’ve decided to make a post stating your intention and may even be looking around for post about artists who are taking commissions. Within seconds of your post though you’ve found several DMs from accounts you haven’t interacted with claiming they can draw whatever you’re looking for and make reference to being able to draw anything you’d like. You assume such DMs are a common practice by artists and begin discussing your order.

How it works

Upon glancing at the account who messaged you it is clear they seem quite skilled in their craft. They have several posts of their art that is masterfully illustrated and seems lovely to look at. The style may seem slightly inconsistent across the images but maybe they just aren’t too good at certain aspects of their art so mistakes may be visible here and there. You explain to them what you’d like and they offer to do it for what seems Iike a decent price though very high you are sure it’s based on the quality. You pay for it and then wait on progress shots. Unfortunately this is where you begin to realize the mistake you’ve made.

What to do

The progress shots you’re getting are wildly inconsistent and seem too well rendered for just being a WIP. They aren’t sending you a sketch as a baseline to adjust you are getting lineart WIPs that are fully drawn. Even when you ask them to change something the tweak is entirely different than the original. You look back at their art posts and begin scrutinizing them more closely and realize the art has the tells of being generated by AI. You may even discover some art their posting has been took from another artist and altered with AI to remove any watermarks.

It’s time to inform the artists that the person has stolen their hard work and you confront the person you’re commissioning about what you’ve found out. They are adamant that the art they post is their own but with further pressure they’ll admit that they just wanted to ‘promote’ the artist despite not mentioning them. You demand a refund as the art you’re getting is not drawn by a human at all but the scammer has already got your money and they’ve blocked you to go target someone else.

Avoiding this scam

To avoid scams like this it’s suggested to check the commissions tag and see if anyone’s open or ask around. Do not trust anyone who’s sending you DMs with no prior interaction claiming they do commissions as generally speaking real artists don’t do this unless you already contacted them elsewhere. I’m sure I’ll even get a few scammers messaging me claiming they read this post. I myself offer commissions but I don’t DM people! saw your post on scams and avoided a commissioner scam like a few months ago because i am also an artist and the scammer was extremely bad at their job.

how do commissioner scams work? i just know that they are scams that exist.

Basically the scammer says give them a ref of your char (or ref for whatever) and they’ll then trace official art/feed it to Gen-AI/filter official art into lineart before spitting out a WIP that has ‘preview’ plastered all over it.

Then they’ll charge you for work they didn’t do and won’t refund you when you find out it’s a scam.

I mean you want to pay someone one entire dollar for speaking a sentence or two. Do you even know how much you should pay people for that kind of thing?

(This is the same person who calls themselves an artist, can draw quite well, and used AI because drawing humans was too hard. :/ )

“Someone impersonated you and I reported you by accident” - accidentally reported you scam

“You sent me free tumblr premium link but it scammed me” - accidentally reported you scam

“You stole money from me so my friends reported you” - accidentally reported you scam

“I saw your post about looking for artists to commission. I do commissions and would love to illustrate your idea.” - commissioner scam

“I read your fic and was inspired by a certain scene. I’d love to draw it for you as a commission just let me know your budget.” - commissioner scam

“(Ai generated summary of a fic) and I’d love to draw dm me on discord pls.” - commissioner scam

“Your account has been put into lurker mode” - verification scam

“Creator funding has been paused.” - verification scam

“Pls kindly go to this link to verify.” - verification scam

“Insulin is $300 nt asking for a windfall” - donation scam

“Need medicine to prevent lungs collapsing.” - donation scam

“Nose freezes and asthma” - donation scam

“DM me if commission open.” - Commission scam

“I’d love to purchase this artwork as an nft” - nft scam

Hello everyone! While fundraisers are always share d to @kyra45-helping-others I’ve been running a mini event where donating to verified fundraisers will get you a reward based on the donation amount! In order to participate, you will need to donate to a fundraiser one of the master lists I have over on my mutual aid account and message me with proof of the donation. Once you do so, you can claim one of the following rewards:

- Any amount will get you a dragon design. Be it $1 or $100. If you don’t want a specific reward you can get this as well by default!

- $8: Headshot

- $17: Fullbody

- $20: Icon

- $30: Non-dragon custom with refsheet

For every 10 dragons drawn I’ll design 1 extra dragon to give away! The only change from my previous rules is that anyone can adopt this extra design for free and I don’t pick who gets it from a list. There is currently 11 dragons and 1 bonus dragon!

Also another adjustments from the previous posting:

If someone donates $1,000 to a fundraiser I’ll design Jess and Key demon forms!

If someone donates $2,000 to a fundraiser I’ll design 10 dragons to give away and give the donor three designs with a ref sheet!

idk what it is but why do commission scammers who specifically are themed around anime or vtubing act like THAT?

i've noticed a pattern they all have like a cutesy uwu way of typing.

It’s mostly to look more realistic and act nice until you call them out.

Sadly these scammers do know there are people who are not aware of this scam, which is unfortunately why people tend to fall for it. :(

Another yearly reminder that badjokesbyjeff and writing-prompt-s harassed actual Palestinians and started the idea that all gfm accounts are ran by a ‘scam ring’. Neither ever apologized and have pretended this never happened as they still post regularly.

(Writing-prompt-s made an ‘apology’ stating any posts about the incident was due to moderators as they hadn’t been running the blog for some time. This post was deleted eventually.)

You know this is always the post that drags out these trolls. They can’t just keep to themselves and move on. No one even mocked them. I was very late even seeing them! Imagine this is how you spend your days on here. Commenting on posts that tell you about people who hate Palestinians.

Is "vetted by association" legitimate? Just wondering because I saw someone say they were vetted by association by a Tumblr pereon, but they used @/Example instead of without the /

Not accusing anyone, just wondering why someone would say they're associated with someone, but not @ them properly

Hmm... I'm really not sure how to answer this, to be honest.

Like I've said in my pinned post, I'm not someone who can say a fundraiser blog is or isn't a scam, and people need to do their own research and trust their own gut before they make decisions on if they wish to donate to someone or not.

But if someone is saying 'vetted by association' and they aren't actually tagging the person (or the person has tags turned off so their name isn't linked).. that's... hm..

You could try reaching out to the person they are tagging to see if they're legitimate, but then you also run the risk of that being an alt account or something similar... It's a tough situation for sure!

Usually it’s just done so the tagged account isn’t notified. I know I’m often tagged in a post where it’s shown I’ve confirmed friends as being actual people.

However I’ll still get messages from people who don’t see that and instead assume my friend is a scammer because they got bothered at seeing a mutual aid post.

But if you’re suspicious you can always contact the account for their confirmation just BE NICE and not accuse them of being a scam.

These fake staff accounts are really trying their scam on art fight from the info in the latest news. A site dedicated to art. Are people falling for this? Out of all the places where it’s usually extremely clear what a staff account looks like?
