The video game history foundation has just finished scanning every copy of the neopets magazine and added it to their archive. Super cool!
It might be a little silly, but Neopets Magazine is an important slice of a different part of gaming culture.
During its four-year run, Neopets Magazine covered the latest news and strategies for the influential 2000s-era web game. It also had a lot of articles about Neopets merchandise and trading cards. In fact, it’s mostly ads for Neopets products. Or long articles about Neopets lore. At best, it is mostly an off-topic magazine. So why did we focus on this magazine of our archive? Simple: it’s about the game’s audience. Neopets was, arguably, the defining girl game of the 2000s. An entire microgeneration of girls got their start in the world of digital entertainment by raising virtual pets and playing Flash games to get Neopoints. [...] Notably, many of the magazine’s articles are about creativity and customization. There’s shades in here of the gameplay styles that have become more popular in the last decade with the rise of cozy games and farming sims. My favorite quirk of Neopets Magazine is in the audience survey that came with some issues. In one survey question, they asked whether readers bought this magazine at a clothing store! That would have reached a completely different audience than we usually associate with game magazines. Can you imagine PC Gamer being sold at a Charlotte Russe? The point is that Neopets The Official Magazine represents a different slice of gaming culture, one that we know matters to researchers and to our extended community.

So what do we think about the Geekify email announcing the death of the Neopets ttrpg
I'm genuinely surprised that Neopia gave sufficient fucks to pull the plug. There are a lot of officially licensed tabletop RPGs that make an absolute shitshow of the properties they're ostensibly based on and make it to print without a peep of protest from the licensor, some of them involving franchises with much bigger bottom lines than this one, and fucking Neopets is the one that does their due diligence? Really? Really?
I am legit afraid to ask what happened.
TL/DR; version: an outfit called Geekify had been contracted to produce a licensed tabletop RPG based on Neopets. Some weeks ago, they released a public preview of the forthcoming game which featured:
a strange preoccupation with sword-and-sorcery violence that looked a lot like someone had simply slapped the Neopets license on top of their homebrew Dungeons & Dragons clone rather than building something to suit the subject matter;
a discussion of player safety tools which seemed to have been copied and pasted from a totally unrelated game, and which (among other things) advised GMs to discuss with their group exactly how much explicit sexual violence was acceptable at their table; and
several sections which appeared to have been deleted entirely and replaced with written allegations that the contracted author(s) had not been paid for their work, and the project's alleged editor didn't notice before putting the preview up, I guess?
And to top it all off, it's now sounding like Neopia might not have authorised a public preview in the first place, so not a great showing all around.
at the actual ass crack of dawn TNT has now put out a statement about the geekify TTRPG, stating that they will be ending their license agreement with geekify effective immediately
Neopets addresses concerns over the Geekify TTRPG beta, citing lore and brand misalignment, demanding fixes, transparency, and timelines.
the reasoning is very vague, likely to avoid lawsuits, but with the specific mention of "quality, reliability, and overall customer experience" the reason for the split is likely due to issues with geekify reported by other users in the past.
due to the way that kickstarter handles queries and refunds, all backer refunds are being handled by geekify directly as opposed to neopets themselves. This is standard for Kickstarter projects, this is not TNT shirking their responsibility onto Geekify. i personally don't care enough to fight them for the singular dollar i gave them, but if you backed this project for any tier higher than that i encourage you to seek a refund ASAP.
TNT has also stated that they're stepping in to ensure that all backers receive the promised avatar, updates will be provided as soon as the distribution method is ready. so at least we all get a fun memento from this absolute trainwreck.
this kickstarter was for a licensed product, and was terminated due to a licensing contract breach (among other things). this isn't some random startup, geekify is an established company that did not deliver what was promised and behaved highly unprofessionally along the way. any other kickstarter it would be expected to "eat the loss", but not with this one and especially not with neopets themselves encouraging people to reach out to them for refunds.
