artist pals: need some affirmation about charging for my work

How do you all broach the subject of your fees/being reciprocated for your work? I really like doing donation and trade based work, but it seems like sometimes that gets interpreted as free. Now, if I could, I would love to be able to send everything out as gifts, but fuck man, printing and postage is expensive. I just really struggle with this, because I have a hard time assigning worth to my work and I know that times are hard for everyone. But I have to remember that I'm part of those everyone's. And the other thing is, i have so many lovely people in my life who do make sure to pay artists no matter what. Its definitely not the norm, ive just noticed it happening a little lately. Idk I'm just asking for tips really. Anything helps.
