Today is Carl's memorial. I was extremely lucky to have him as my professor. I don't think he ever knew how much he brightened everyone's day. He was also a regular at the Blick store I used to work at while I was his student. At the time, I was terribly stressed and anxious all the time, juggling a retail job and being a full time student. Carl often came into the store to pick up a couple of paint tubes, and told me that I was doing a great job juggling work and school, and that I ought to take better care of myself. He really did care. I felt a validation I so desperately needed at the time and it truly kept me going. I have seen very few teachers like him--who are able to connect with students so uniquely and genuinely. He was so special, almost magical, and I miss him.
