Lyndsy. "Lyndsy?" Eilidh would recognise her voice anywhere. Against her every instinct, she lowered her hands and met her eye as she kneeled in front of her. She'd opened her mouth, but nothing came out. This had to be some sick joke, right? A cruel prank. A terrible twist of fate. Here they both were, alive, while the memory of their friends' last night wailed in the background. Lyndsy, who hadn't been there that night. Lyndsy, who they had fallen out with over her perfectly insufferable power. Lyndsy, who didn't know what had happened to their childhood friends. Hannah. Callum. Morgan.

"I'm okay," she answered at last, her palms stinging - but this wasn't real, right? "I'm okay," she said a little louder, but her voice still shook. She balled her hands into fists briefly, before reaching out to touch Lyndsy's shoulder. "I can," she nodded, struggling to her feet as a new panic rose in her chest. She didn't want Lyndsy to see this. It was one thing to confess the terrible truth to her, it was quite another to do so at the scene of the crime. "We- We should get out of here."

"I'm here." Lyndsy wasn't sure how much of a comfort that would be, but she was trying. None of this was real, of course, but it had been. Whatever Eilidh had been through, her own struggles paled in comparison. A lump caught in her throat as she placed a hand on her shoulder and used it to help her stand. Without hesitation, Lyndsy stood with her, supporting her further by holding on to her elbow and making sure she stayed steady on her feet. Her eyes kept drifting from her old friend to the scene playing out behind her, and she couldn't shake the pull inside her to look closer. It wasn't her trauma, and she had no right to Eilidh's memories, but damn it, she wanted to know.

"Right. Yeah. Any idea how to do that?" Her attention was still shifting between the car and Eilidh, and before they could brainstorm ideas, another question tumbled from her lips. "Eilidh, what happened to you?"

"Flattery will get you everywhere," Phoebe responded with a dramatic hand over her heart. Admittedly, she was actually rather touched by the sentiment. She loved to be loved, but the idea that she was really making an impact was rather special. "Oh, of course! I do have an in with the big boss, you know. I'll have it sent off to the printers, and before you know it, there'll be inspirational merch galore. Goodness, you'll have to work on building that back up. No shame having a break, though, of course. Summer is for indulging in whatever you like. It's been wonderful, thank you! So happy to be back and in action again. And it's a treat as ever to see so many new and old faces. Are you glad to be back, Lyndsy?"

Lyndsy grinned, happy to be in such good graces with at least one of the professors. It helped that there wasn't really much in the way of written theory for her class, and even when there was, she was deeply interested in the topic. Her class was one that she repeated every year to advance her skills, and she didn't even feel all that bad about showing off; after all, the class was built for it. "Great, I'll take ten! Maybe then my decor will be balanced with my roommate." Josie was always hanging things on the wall, while Lyndsy didn't really have much of anything to put up. "Last night was definitely a good start! But yeah, it's been good having everyone back again." She wasn't a fan of how empty the school felt during the holidays. "Have there been any newbies with potential?" What she was a fan of, however, was hearing about all the new powers gracing the halls.

ivelisse  had  been  right  there  beside  her.  it  was  typical,  that  they  were  always  at  the  scene  of  the  crime.  she  wore  dark  glasses  that  shielded  her  eyes  from  the  sunlight,  but  at  lyndsy's  exclamation  she  chuckled  and  shook  their  head.  “what  fun  would  that  be ? ”  they  asked,  “tequila  is  my  poison  of  choice,  too,  and  you  can't  let  me  make  all  my  bad  decisions  alone.”

"Look at you!" Lyndsy exclaimed, hands flung out at her. "You're wearing sunglasses indoors!" She laughed and returned to her coffee, regretting raising the volume of her voice. "Obviously, I would never let you make a single bad decision on your own, but I could really do without the pounding in my head the next morning. Do you think there's a superpower for fighting off hangovers?"

"Exactly! See, you always get it," Paloma nodded, a grin still on her face, simply happy to be in Lyndsy's company in no matter what state she was in. "The first best day is the END of term when we're free from tests, assignments, professors, the whole nine yards..." though they could only dream, it felt like even in the short two years that Paloma had inhabited their institution, they were stuck within it. "You look like a hot mess. A baddie baddie shots o'clock type mess. And Julian," they shake their head, starting to get up from their seat as an idea pops into their head. "Parties like that are just not his thing. Doesn't really need a rager to blow the roof off this place, y'know? Or your panties off either, I see." The suggestive eyebrow is matched, shot back, Paloma trying not to laugh.

"Okay, that's fair, but I also hate the end of term–so many hotties go home for the holidays and then what am I supposed to do?" She asked with an overdramatic shrug. Sure, there were still some people around, and she could always go into town and mingle with the regular people, but what fun was that? "A hot mess, I can live with." Lyndsy laughed and then grinned conspiratorially. "Look, there's just something about him, alright? He's like a salt lamp; I just want to stick my tongue on him. Sue me!"

"Why?" Nate questioned the other as he took a seat next to the other, placing his books and a cup of black coffee on the table. It had been a long morning already, and all he wanted, really, was to go back to his room and barricade there for the next coupe of weeks. Months, maybe. "Tequila always gets such a bad rep for screwing people over. Don't miss out on it, embrace the pain that follows."

Lyndsy couldn't stop the grin from forming on her face as Nate Gallagher took a seat beside her–god, if he wasn't as tempting as a tequila shot himself. "Embrace the pain? That's your advice?" She laughed as she propped her head up on her hand, "That's a bit masochistic, don't you think? Don't get me wrong, I love tequila in the moment, but I could do without the pounding headache the next morning."

"Oh, never, darling! You must continue to live life to its fullest and, often, most regrettable. It'll only build your character arc and develop your plot lines further. If we're not doing it for the drama, then what's the point?" Wise words, as always, came spilling from Phoebe's lips as she passed by Lyndsy. She took a thoughtful sip of her iced latte then, adding with a kind smile, "Are you really feeling it today, though?"

Despite the pounding headache, Lyndsy smiled brightly up at Professor Phoebe Hughes. "This is why you're everyone's favourite." She was so dramatic–even out of the classroom–and she could honestly listen to her all day. "Do you think you could get me that printed on an inspirational poster? Live life to it's fullest and most regrettable." What a motto to live by! "But yes, I am. I think I behaved too much over summer and my tolerance has plummeted. How has your first day back been?"

"What kind of influence would I be on you if I discouraged fun," Paloma couldn't help but grin then laugh -- though they had been just as inebriated were able able to recall the night well. "It's probably the second best day to get blasted the way you did. Besides, you're brave enough to look how I felt this morning. At this point, I almost think you need MORE shots."

"I think you'd be a good one. I think that's literally the definition of a good influence." Lyndsy laughed, despite the travesty of her current situation. "What's the first best day?" She asked before taking a drink of her coffee, but her brows furrowed mid-sip. "Are you saying I look a mess?" Her jaw dropped in a fake gasp. "Call me a masochist, but despite what I said, I wouldn't turn down more shots. You should bring Julian with us this time." She said with a suggestive eyebrow.

There was no reason for Eilidh to believe that this aptitude test would be any different from the training she'd had these past few years. They wanted to see how everyone would manage in a high stress situation, right? Dodging obstacles was easy-peasy for her, and she wasn't afraid to throw her fists up, either. She was ready for anything that came her way. And, besides, none of it was real.

Truly, her famous last words. The shift was jarring as Eilidh suddenly felt the gravel under her palms and tasted the blood in her mouth. The air was cold, the road slick with rain water. The feeling of foreboding was undeniable. She laid there, face down in the road, scared to move - scared to breathe, even - because this was all too familiar. Almost six years had passed, but she couldn't forget this night, no matter how hard she tried. The air came pouring back into her lungs, then, as she coughed and spluttered her way to her knees. The glass had cut her palms, the sound of the car alarm was wailing, and she knew that if she looked behind her, her whole world would end again.

Lyndsy had been looking forward to the aptitude test since she had found out about it. As far as she was concerned, it was an opportunity for her to show off without the eyes of other students on her. The professors would be able to see what she was capable of without anyone resenting her for it, and that would do wonders for her future career. So, when the simulation shifted, she hadn't been prepared. Lyndsy didn't really have one specific traumatic event for her mind to latch on to in this moment. What she had was a collection of memories reminding her of everything she strived not to be; every time she disappointed her parents, every time they paraded her around like a circus act, the friends she almost had before they realised she was insufferable, the attitude of believing she had been better than them. Everything she had ever hated about herself, laid out before her in full technicolour.

It took her a moment to realise when something had shifted, but the blaring car alarm was enough to tell her that she wasn't in her own memories anymore. Was she still in the simulation? Lyndsy started walking towards the car, when she noticed the body on the ground and released a gasp. Eilidh. She picked up the pace, running over to her instead of the car, and dropping to her knees beside her. "Eilidh? Eilidh, are you okay?" Despite the years that they had both been in Vanguardia, Lyndsy hadn't spoken to her old friend until now, and even in a situation like this, she struggled. "Can you move?"

she  frowns.  “  making  the  lights  every  time  is  a  lot  of  work,  a  lot  of  energy…  it's  easier  to  just  have  a  light  source  to  begin  with.  ”  josie's  not  sure  why  she's  explaining  this  all  to  lyndsy,  but  she  realizes  she  had  probably  never  explained  much  about  her  ability  at  all  to  her  before.  did  she  even  know  how  lyndsy's  really  worked?  “  it'll  just  be  on  my  side,  and  whenever  you  want  full  lights  out,  it'll  be  lights  out.  promise.  ” she  says  diplomatically,  a  glance  down  at  the  lights.  “  but  if  you'd  prefer,  i  won't  put  them  up.  ”   she  had  always  been  one  for  ambience,  but  she'd  rather  not  start  any  conflict  with  lyndsy.  the  tension  between  them  was  just  as  uncomfortable,  and  she'd  rather  not  add  onto  it.  but  the  door  to  conversation  is  ajar,  and  something  in  josie  tries  to  push  it  a  little  further  open.  “  um,  what  have  you  been  up  to,  over  break  ?  ”

"Right..." Her head nodded as if she had any understanding about how Josie's powers–or anyone else's, for that matter–worked. Lyndsy's powers were, for the most part, passive and the biggest thing that limited her was her own stamina; she couldn't even begin to fathom what a power burnout felt like. "No. No, you should put them up if you want them. You know me, I can sleep through anything." A pang of guilt shot through her at the thought of Josie being willing to hide her belongings away just to appease her. Was she really so awful to live with that she felt like she needed to make accommodations to keep the peace?

Lyndsy's eyes were focused on the coffee cup in her hand, reading the name which couldn't have been spelt more wrong if the barista had tried, when Josie chose to keep the conversation going. "Oh, um..." Her attention lifted back to her as she shrugged. "Not a lot. I've been working at a bar nearby. Played some board games with Ryan, but he's a sore loser and our Monopoly board doesn't have Piccadilly anymore." There was a pause, but she added, "What about you?"

Okay, so maybe staying out all night before having to attend your first day of classes had been a bad idea. Lyndsy had barely made it through the day and now found herself slumped over a table at the café, clinging to her cappuccino for dear life. "Next time I insist on shots of tequila, can someone please be a dear and knock them from my hand?"

"Damn it!" Lyndsy exclaimed as she stumbled over her own feet, the dagger flying from her hand only slightly askew as it hit the target on the other side of the training room. For the past half hour, she had been practicing with combining gymnastics with knife-throwing, and it was growing tedious. The thing about her power was that it allowed her to learn skills immediately and perfectly, but stringing those skills together required a focus that Lyndsy struggled with. She could throw the daggers with precision, she could flip and bend her body with ease, but trying to do both make her movements seem clunky–fractured. A robot would be able to make a smoother transition.

Sighing in frustration, Lyndsy released the three daggers still in her hands, each of them hitting the bullseye of different targets. Turning to grab her water, her attention caught on a figure at the door. "Franky." Crap. His power was enhanced accuracy and here she was practically rubbing his face in the fact that she could do it too. "I–Uh... I'm just finishing if you need the room."

suitcase  propped  open,  josie  stands  by  her  bed  gently  refolding  clothes  and  carefully  placing  belongings  into  place.  even  though  she  came  and  left  with  every  holiday,  this  little  room  sometimes  felt  more  like  home  than  anywhere  else.  a  breath  of  fresh  air,  even  despite  her  roommate.  not  that  she  had  anything  particularly  against  lyndsy,  but  despite  josie's  best  efforts  to  remain  cordial,  there  always  seemed  to  be  a  line  drawn  in  the  sand,  some  kind  of  boundary  the  two  didn't  bother  to  cross  for  the  other.  even  her  earlier  text  to  lyndsy  --  arriving  today,  will  be  at  the  room  in  an  hour  –  had  no  other  frills.  so  when  the  door  swings  open  and  in  walks  her  roommate,  there  is  no  grand  it's  so  good  to  see  you!  exclaimed  with  a  hug.  instead,  a  gentle  smile  and  a  disclaimer.  “  hi,  sorry  for  the  mess.  ”   the  mess  being  the  minimal  space  her  luggage  and  a  box  took  up  on  the  floor.  “  i'll  be  done  soon  –  just  have  to  finish  this  and  then  put  up  some  new  decorations…  ”  gestures  to  a  set  of  string  lights,  a  new  lamp.  “  won't  take  too  long. ”

Lyndsy had known that Josie would be returning to the school today, but receiving that text had really put a damper on her day. It wasn't that she hated the other woman, there was just something so unbelievably irritating about her; she was too pristine, too pretentious, too much. Biting the bullet, she got her coffee to go–briefly considering that maybe she should get one for Josie too, only to realise that she had no idea what she would even like. Opening their room door, immediately being hit with an apology, Lyndsy released the smallest sigh as she looked around at the supposed 'mess' before turning her attention to her own side of the room. If Josie thought her luggage was a mess, what the hell was she thinking about Lyndsy's unmade bed and irregular piles of clutter? "I'll do my best not to trip over it all." With one hop, she was over the carnage and dropping on to her bed. "More lights? Can't you just... I don't know, make your own?"
