as a theater kid i wanted to go over some guidelines
whether it be for during the show or after the show
please GOD please turn off your phones. no, don’t put them on vibrate and simple power off. fully. turn. them. off.
don’t talk!!!! don’t whisper to your friend.
do not speak/sing along with the actors. don’t say the lines before they do. i know, being a theater kid is amazing and exciting when you finally get to see the show but be!!! respectful!!
don’t scream everytime someone comes on stage. its extremely disruptive.
i just came back from seeing sea wall/ a life. it’s amazing and i most definitely reccomend it but that show is incredibly silent. there’s no musical numbers, it’s two monologues. you can hear someone eating from the orchestra when you’re in the dress circle. there was someone a few rows behind me who would constantly reply to everything as if they were talking directly to her. don’t do that it’s very annoying
AFTER THE SHOW / STAGE DOOR
y’all have to understand that these actors are tired as fuck and need to rest. don’t overwhelm them.
if the actor is not comfortable with taking a picture: DONT! FORCE! THEM! TO! TAKE! A! PICTURE!
don’t push to get to the front. it’s first come first serve. i swear people at stagedoors are always happy to scoot for you to take pictures and happy to give them your playbill to sign
if the actor there is in films (for example; tom hiddleston and jake gyllenhaal) DONT GET PICTURES WITH THEM FOR CLOUT!! jake has constantly said that he would rather talk to someone than take a picture. at stagedoor today people paraded him just for a picture. they didn’t tell him how amazing he did (which he did absolutely amazing), they didn’t even ask for him to sign their playbill. they just wanted a picture. he was obviously getting extremely uncomfortable and nobody else cared and it broke my heart
also! if you’re there for a specific actor, don’t give them your soul attention. there are other amazing actors in performances as well who deserve just as much recognition!!
but yeah i think that was overdue sorry
anyways yeah so i went to see sea wall/ a life and it actually slapped that was amazing. i went to the stage door and was at the end of the line and jake was obviously getting very uncomfortable bc everyone started parading him for pictures so i calmly told him how amazing he did and i asked him to sign my playbill. he said of course and i thanked him like a thousand times, and he thanked me for seeing the show. i asked him if it was okay if we took a picture and he said yes and i thanked him again and told him they did amazing
it’s as simple as human decency. if someone’s uncomfortable, try to calm them down!! it probably means more than you think.
dont come at me for this btw, i’ve been wanting to make one of these for a while because theater etiquette has gone down the drain and people need to remember it’s theater, not a concert
