because nat, who resisted the wilderness (lottie), was still such a crucial part of IT overall.

nat who is forever haunted by the existence of something in both its physical and psychological form. now obviously this really applies for. all of the girls. but lottie has put so much effort into nat as if she was investing in her, lottie sees nat as this light at the end of the tunnel.
lottie tried to get nat to understand the wilderness, to let "it" in, to let it engulf her, but the more nat refused the more interest lottie had in her and the more it was mistaken for the wilderness' calling.
and i often see people talk about how a lot of lottienat scenes are really just connecting them back to the wilderness which... yes! connecting them back to the thing LOTTIE created, the thing lottie is a "disciple" of
the existence of the wilderness and the "it" that all the girls believe in comes from lottie and the lack of medication she had, it came from her delusion. it expanded and was enabled by the rest of the girls, but truly nats relationship with "it" AND lottie tie together like a knot

i dont really want to go into what anti lottienat people say because my whole point in doing this is to kind of open eyes, if they WANT to be opened.
however, the one thing I'll OUTRIGHT debunk right now is when people say, "They dont like each other, nat hates lottie, etc." i have analyzed lottienat to their very center, and its not even funny at a certain point. but im not going to try and argue my point that way. that's literally what the rest of the post is. but i hate when people say this about them, AND any other ship. i do truly think a lot of people forget that a ships dynamic is what draws us to them. yes, i know they have this... feud, and yes, it draws me to them. the idea that just because "they dislike each other" immediately = not shippable/an understandable ship is a crazy idea to me, and honestly, just not true. People get drawn to the complicated dynamics between characters, or any dynamics. i PERSONALLY find myself really interested in ships where the characters have a complicated relationship with eachother that you can really pick apart. some people dont, and thats okay. but when you donr acknowledge thats why you dont think they make sense it stirs a whole thing up.
season 1 / precrash lottienat:
i nave consumed a LOT. of pre crash lottienat media so please excuse me if it starts to sound a bit TOO fanon like halfway through (although i think for the MOST part fanon lottienat is easily connected to canon, but some people dont like that and that's okay i guess. im going to TRY to avoid it when im not specifying it as fanon)
im gonna start off with the obvious and repeated stuff. Excuse me
the initial argument with shauna and tai, when nat got involved and tai went after her lottie and shauna tell tai to basically back off (hi shaunanat shippers) and theyre the only ones to do it while the majority of the team is already surrounding them
pilot ep, jackie telling everyone to get in a line and you know..her whole captain thing
once they all split up to their respective partners, lottie and nat immediately go to eachother. is that a stretch? maybe. okay. but the amount of times they had them positioned together or around eachother in the first episode makes me think not
okay im really trying to stay away from fanon lottienat so im struggling with precrash. they had one episode SO IT DOESNT MATTER ANYWAYS!!!!

a big thing that i realized as i was rewatching s1 is the positioning of lottie and nat HOWEVER because this show is actual actors theres a 99% chance this is complete coincidence/actors doings instead of intentional (i went from arcane back to yellowjackets forgive me for noticing this)
s1, ill admit, isnt a season full of lottienat moments or things to justify why theyre so loved. but that doesnt mean there are none
like the biggest moment for me is nat waking up from her nightmare, seeing lottie, and her first instinct is to comfort her.
nat is a good person, we know this. its shown throughout the whole show. but moments like this, where she handles lottie so tenderly and softly (in MULTIPLE scenarios) is what sticks out to a lot of people.
i think doomcoming is where their opinions are really shown to be split off. it was happening gradually, and the scene of nat telling lottie she was done with her shit is what set them up for s2
season 2 lottienat - teen tl:
i am one of like. three people who actually find their teen dynamic more interesting than their adult dynamic (although very similar) so i think ill have more to say for this one than adult, especially because its been a bit since i properly watched s2.
the beginning of s2 is where lottie is shown doing her rituals to protect nat and travis while they hunt, nat is a lot more reluctant than travis is. she is trying to discourage lottie from continuing to do it, but fails because lottienat is literally having two stubborn mules head to head waiting for the other one to fall.
aside from this, she also doesnt like that lottie is giving travis "false hope" and their WHOLE THING WITH THIS IS MISUNDERSTANDING. neither of them understand the other. STUBBORNNESS!!!! this isnt a downside of them, this is what makes them so interesting. if it isnt your thing, thats okay. but as a WHOLE its a really interesting dynamic to see two strong-willed women pulling the other in a game of tug of war, but the flag is stuck over the middle for 25 years.
at a certain point during s2, they start outright explaining themselves to each other. lottie TELLING nat shes doing this to protect her, and nat telling her its bullshit. both of them believe their sides/opinions are correct. lotties protection of nat is what i am so drawn to. as much as nat resents it, she doesn't really.. stop.. it? i guess. not that there's much she could do. but i think she had this understanding that as much as lotties rituals seemed like voodoo bullshit they weren't doing any actual harm to HER.
this point is more directly tied to nat, but the only time she reallys snaps at lottie is if it involves someone else. if it involves her attempting to instill the same beliefs into someone else as she does to nat. which i honestly just makes nats character more interesting but simultaneously a fun point to bring up
in both timelines, you can see lottie slowly breakthrough to nat. in the beginning of season 2 nat is angry, and she is feisty. she does not like lotties idealogy. later in season 2, it gets through. not that she ever "LIKES" lottie, but she fights her less.
i can also start to argue that lottienats disagreements are caused by the fact that the others got involved. lottie and nats ideas dont align, but id argue that they could avoid it being a problem if the rest of the girls (and travis) didnt start to choose lottie. nat knows lottie is speaking out of her ass, shes the only one who knows that. (kind of.) the rest of them dont really have solid opinions or beliefs. when they fall under lottie, nat wants them to SEE what lottie is really saying. and in order to do that, she has to break the root cause. like a hive mind i think
^ this idea stemmed from me rewatching the scene of lottienats hunting competition. nat is being accused of not doing anything, and she wouldn't be if the others could see that the bear and everything else wasn't some voodoo magic bullshit.
anyways. their competition is an insanely interesting scene to me, and honestly, one of my favorites. the nod before they leave is them respecting each other (which i can argue debunks the idea that they dont like each other.) this is them literally shoving in our face that despite their arguments and their beadbutting, they dont actually have a problem with EACH OTHER. they have a problem with what theyre trying to tell people.
the bathtub scene is talked about SO often because of how intimate it is. lottie is bare. she js weak. she is literally in the most vulnerable state a person COULD be. and i think this is a really great relationship of their dynamic, honestly. nat has the chance to pounce, she has the chance to hurt, and she DOESNT. because she is nat. and lottie is lottie. they both were weak, weak because they wanted to one up the other. but they failed. which is also a great representation.
that whole scene just. shows them. lottie is open, she is (somewhat) vulnerable. with nat, and with the others. but id argue with nat the most. because nat resists her the most. she has to show her more to try and get her. nat having the chance to pounce, the chance to bite. she doesnt. she holds back and holds her tongue. i think its biased to say nat understands her the most, but i do truly think nat puts the most effort INTO tryimg to understand her. i think nat sees what lottie shows, and she could use that. she could hurt her. she could do more than just resist. but she really doesnt. and nats weak as well. not nearly as weak as lottie. (having taken the bath before her) but still obviously weak. she doesnt have to show lottie more than the others. (being fully clothed) she shows lottie the same thing that everyone else sees. this COULD be why lotties attempts to get to her have to be so persistent, so intense. their whole competition, it equates to the idea of them butting heads. AGAIN! but this in the sense that they want the others to follow THEM. the competition is for the others to believe in THEM. it directly translates to their regular dynamic. they fight eachother to try and come out on top. they failed in the competition, there never is a clear winner for who did the most. which applies to their WHOLE THING! they disagree. the girls choose. they continue to disagree, but not without a sense of fondness. (s3 is what can be referenced here.)

i unfortunately can only reiterate whats been said time and time again. lottie queens nat to protect her. shes been on a mission to protect nat for the entirety of the season. she gives nat this power that nobody else can question so the girls cant touch her. she needs nat to be held high enough where she looks over everyone. i think there was a sense of trust in nat as well. my biggest defense here is the settings of nats crowning vs shaunas crowning. nats is a much calmer, slower decision. shaunas is done impulsively, to protect nat in that moment. the girls were saying that even as their leader, nat should not have had that power. and she is abusing it. lottie had to act quickly, and gave it to the next best option (in lotties mind, i think.)
season 2 lottienat - adult tl:
okay. i started this thing June 20th. its. been a while. but im so locked. this is a lot messier than i meant for it to be when i started but has anything worked yet
anyways.
season 2 starts off with lottie having people quite literally kidnap nat and bring her to the commune. she did this because nat tried to kill herself, and this is another form of protection. ...god knows how long she had people stationed to watch over nat. but. she had people LOOKING AFTER NAT!!!!
nat obviously resents lottie, thats kind of their entire dynamic. but my biggest reason to see them in the adult timeline is that LOTTIE GETS THROUGH TO NAT!!!!!!!!!!
one of their first interactions in the adult timeline is talking about how lottie is still the same fucked up, deluded person she was in the wilderness. one of their last was nat TALKING ABOUT HOW LOTTIE SAVED HER!!!!!
im writing this in December, so its been... very close to 6 months since i started this and i have much less motivation to go scene by scene, especially for the adult timeline when thats the one that most people see them in
so. im sorry that this one is lazy.. if anyone wants me to explain more i am genuinely more than happy to do so i just really need tk stop procrastinating this post BUT a big part of the adult timeline and lottienats inclusion in it is that theyre more open with communicating how they see eachother.
nat sees lottie as cruel, as someone who does harm because she wants to. NOT someone who believes its what is best, when thats all lottie wanted nat to see.

season 3 lottienat - teen tl:
i do truly think that lottienats full potential was nerfed with s3, to make this relationship between a god and a non believer HAPPEN, and then have the god put the non believer in the position of being the one the others believed IN, HOLY SHIT!!!
however. i (d1 lottienat overanalyst) think that they still did s3 SOMEWHAT well
this one will be insanely short because we saw how much their screen time was cut BUT!!! the few major scenes they have say a lot to me.
voting for coach bens life, nat looks to lottie because she knows the impact she 1. has on the girls and 2. dare i argue, wants to see if she still has some sense of morals
said and heard a million times before, lottie crowning shauna in order to protect nat. such a stupidly important scene, lottie knows the importance nat has to the group (and to her [you were always its favorite / IT was just us!]) so to understand that taking her 'power' away wouldnt truly take her IMPACT away is what id argue happened and lottie thought about. she knew that no matter what, they wouldnt be able to lose nat or they all lost their minds (without exaggeration) and source of food.
"Lottie, what did you do?" id argue that although this scene happens in s3, it truly shows THROUGHOUT the show. nat believes that lottie isnt as bad as she is, that she CAN get better and that if she just keeps trying, keeps seeing the good in her, that she will come back. its a constant battle for her, she resents lottie for who shes become yet somehow never expects her next move.
their whole talk about their home lives, lottie not wanting to return. very important scene for both of their characters individually, their dynamic, and for the show. for their dynamic, it shows (again) that nat believes lottie has the ability to get better, but ALSO. for lottie, this is the most vulnerable she has been since season one. nat, the only one who cares enough about the entirety of the group to care about the girl behind some of the groups WORST actions enough to try to bring her home. lotties "vulnerability" in s1 was her confession while all were confessing. her vulnerability in s3 is a desperate attempt to have nat, not even the others, just NAT to see her. as she is. not the one that she WAS, but the one she has become. now AGAIN!!!!! NAT THINKS LOTTIE CAN BE REDEEMED, OR AT LEAST WANTS HER TO BE!!! LOTTIE IS COMFORTABLE WITH THE PERSON SHE HAS BECOME! now, that part plays into their characters more than their dynamic, but their separate characters CREATE the dynamic. she wants nat to see that she has never felt more like herself, and in her mind, nat could be just as free as she was if she "let it in." Which i dont think was explicitly said.. but... context clues i guess.
finally,
i feel like i need to reiterate AGAIN that i started this June 20th and am currently writing this on December 17th. It has been 6. months and im going to be honest, i didnt proofread it before i posted it. ive needed to get it done for months because these girls are genuinely consuming me and have been in every way since yellowjackets announced they were filming s3. (and i was a huge fan in 2023 dont get it twisted). I unfortunately spend my time arguing with people about whether or not they make sense and i have MANY analyses ready to go whenever. i think i mightve broken some of the rules i created at the start and if i did i do apologize, i do a lot better when it... hasn't been 6 months

There’s no way Nat doesn’t know or at least guess abt Lottie’s mental issues bc the way she treats her vs how everyone else does is starkly different. With everyone else, it’s “i can’t deal with crazy right now”, “she might actually be crazy”, etc, while with Nat it’s “this is very real, i promise”, “we buried him, remember?” which is such a soft and understanding way of going about it. Even when she’s angriest at Lottie, it’s “what is making you do this?” seeking understanding rather than dismissing her so callously as crazy. The simultaneous specificity and vagueness of seemingly knowing she has issues perceiving reality but not knowing exactly why she’s acting the way she is implies this middle ground of knowing something but not everything. And with how observant and naturally accepting Nat is (like figuring out that Ben was gay just by observation) i wouldn’t be at all surprised if this is something she just picked up on during school and that she and lottie had an understanding about
lottienat and the mutual understanding of how easily the rest of the girls... and travis... will toss them aside as soon as they dont fit the standards they assigned them, all while never knowing the true responsibility of needing to provide and take care of everyone out there.
the understanding of being on the top and so quickly being thrown to the bottom
tailee and their different relationships with religion.....
with the context of the 1990's and Wiskayok being presented as a predominantly white town, I can imagine that Taissa and Laura Lee's religious views don't only differ with belief—it's placement. where does a purposefully educated, well-off, queer black girl find herself in religion? in a world that systemically forced independency on it's women of color, a hesitance in faith seems more likely than not.
alternatively, I believe that highlights the character within Laura Lee. Naive and pure, sure, but with a good-willed dependence that also doesn't necessarily define her. Just as Tai's self-advocacy doesn't mean she can't depend on others, Laura Lee's faith does not hold her back from taking charge of her own—even if following a godly empathy, it's Laura Lee who firmly stood on flying that plane and trying to help Van.
though both are predominant in their opposite ways of life, they aren't opposed—in fact, their slight hesitance may just need a guiding hand from the other.
