“As I began to love myself I found that anguish and emotional suffering are only warning signs that I was living against my own truth. Today, I know, this is “AUTHENTICITY”. As I began to love myself I understood how much it can offend somebody if I try to force my desires on this person, even though I knew the time was not right and the person was not ready for it, and even though this person was me. Today I call it “RESPECT”. As I began to love myself I stopped craving for a different life, and I could see that everything that surrounded me was inviting me to grow. Today I call it “MATURITY”. As I began to love myself I understood that at any circumstance, I am in the right place at the right time, and everything happens at the exactly right moment. So I could be calm. Today I call it “SELF-CONFIDENCE”. As I began to love myself I quit stealing my own time, and I stopped designing huge projects for the future. Today, I only do what brings me joy and happiness, things I love to do and that make my heart cheer, and I do them in my own way and in my own rhythm. Today I call it “SIMPLICITY”. As I began to love myself I freed myself of anything that is no good for my health – food, people, things, situations, and everything that drew me down and away from myself. At first I called this attitude a healthy egoism. Today I know it is “LOVE OF ONESELF”. As I began to love myself I quit trying to always be right, and ever since I was wrong less of the time. Today I discovered that is “MODESTY”. As I began to love myself I refused to go on living in the past and worrying about the future. Now, I only live for the moment, where everything is happening. Today I live each day, day by day, and I call it “FULFILLMENT”. As I began to love myself I recognized that my mind can disturb me and it can make me sick. But as I connected it to my heart, my mind became a valuable ally. Today I call this connection “WISDOM OF THE HEART”. We no longer need to fear arguments, confrontations or any kind of problems with ourselves or others. Even stars collide, and out of their crashing new worlds are born. Today I know “THAT IS LIFE”!” ― Charles Chaplin

“I’ve been telling myself since the age of twelve: ‘I’ve got to be a mogul. I’ve got to be the greatest. I’ve got to get my family out of the hood.’ I started working full time at the age of eighteen, doing door-to-door sales for a gas and electric company. They’d give me $20 every time I signed up a new customer. I worked harder than anyone. I’d wake up at 6 AM every day. I became one of their top performing vendors. I opened new offices. I trained people to work for me. I thought I was happy, but it was just temporary happiness. I was money-minded. I was only chasing vanity. I didn’t care about nobody. Not you. Not your family. The only thing I cared about was what you could do for me. But Shanice changed all that. She made me more spiritual. She’s loving. She’s caring. And she’s confident. I thought I was confident, but I was just cocky. Shanice is confident. She knows what she deserves. She gives out nothing but love, and that’s what she expects. I can’t imagine calling her out of her name. I can’t imagine hurting her feelings. I can’t imagine breaking her heart. I put her on such a high pedestal. I was scared to even touch her when we met. But now that she’s let me up on the pedestal with her, I want to take her even higher.”
The prevalence of high blood pressure among black adults in the United States is among the highest in the world, according to the American Heart Association. More than 40% of non-Hispanic black men and women have high blood pressure.
Black Americans also develop high blood pressure more often and at an earlier age than whites and Hispanics, according to the CDC.
According to a new study, barbershops in the African-American community could help men reduce and control their blood pressure.
Medical mistrust has been an important barrier to African-Americans seeking health care, and so the barbershop -- where men go on a monthly basis and have an opportunity to develop a rapport with a trusted key opinion leader in the community -- that rapport is a perfect foundation for talking about health and checking their blood pressure.
With your donation, we will be able to equip 20 barbershops with blood pressure monitors. In doing so, we can help inform men of their blood pressure so that they may receive treatment or make lifestyle changes.
