Freddie reincarnated,,, back on his bullshit,,,
i know “go be in the Trees and your depression will be fixed” is bullshit. but honestly i think a lot of things would be a little better if we spent more time with things like dirt and small streams and leaves. when you’re inside it’s easy to forget how raw and elementally wondrous the world is. how many colors there are and types of crunches that leaves make, and how many living things. how many things have smells and how different they all are.
It’s really like, youll see a large flock of birds take flight with a FWOOM of wings exploding all at once and it’s like. this is the largest emotion I have ever felt
There’s a great concept from my ecopsych training called “soft fascination”, coined by conservation psychologists Rachel and Stephen Kaplan. Basically it’s the more organic way that nature draws your attention gently and without the noise and blare of a city street full of cars and people and billboards and other stimuli screaming for your attention. Obviously yes, if you run into a bear or a storm comes up then you have a much more stressful sort of focus, but that’s a VERY tiny part of our experience in the natural world. Soft fascination is part of what contributes to the benefits of nature to our health, measurable things like a lower blood pressure and more relaxed heart rate, and a drop in stress hormones like cortisol with an increase in things like serotonin and dopamine.
