Rare Unraveled W (+ Common Keefe L)
As someone who grew up in a house of artists (and have my own artistic side, though it's nowhere near as sharpened as my father's and sister's) I really appreciate that Cassius wasn't. Like. Instantly perfect at drawing? Shannon goes out of her way to show that it took him a lot of practice to get where he is:
Art takes time. Art takes practice. Art takes patience and resilience and mistakes. And I'm glad that Shannon FINALLY acknowledged that.
But by showing us that Cassius is not immediately good at art, she disproves the possibility (not that I ever believed in it) that elves have an innate "talent" for drawing that makes them intuitively create photo-realistic portraits without any, or with very little (and inconsistent) practice...
... meaning Keefe really is just Shannon's specialest little guy who can produce drawings so fucking perfect that Sophie can't even tell what medium he used. He's built like that, you know?
Unfortunately I have a feeling that Cassius not having instantaneous Michelangelo level of skill and a "weird" style is not because Shannon suddenly had an epiphany about how hard drawing is (she knows, since she states that the reason she began writing is because she was a rotten artist), but rather because she associates exceptionalism and innate talent with the "good" guys, whilst practice and effort is given to the "bad" guys.
See: all of Sophie's friends being exceptional at what they do regardless of how little sense it makes (*cough* Maruca *cough*), Stina the bully being a mid Empath, Fitz progressively going from the telepathy prodigy, Wonderboy and Alden's Golden Boy to Sophie's telepathic backup, Alvar needing to invest way more into his appearance to be as handsome as the rest of his family, etc.
