Claude Bolling brings back Duke Ellington's classic "Black, Brown and Beige" on this enjoyable CD. Since Ellington's three-part suite did not feature extensive solos by his unique sidemen, Bolling is able to hint at their presence in his adaptation of Ellington's arrangements for the big band. Forgiving a slightly cutesy interpretation of "Sugar Hill Penthouse," this is a fine re-creation of a much-neglected work.
