The girl with emerald eyes
There was once a young prince in a far away kingdom, whose charm and handsome looks were known far and wide across the country. He was the envy of every man in the kingdom and every young woman desired him. One would say he had everything, wealth, beauty, carisima; and everything he wanted in his command was his. His life, as he saw it, was perfect, except for one thing- a princess to share it with, but he couldn’t love just any girl; he needed one who was his very equal.
To seek out this girl, he met every eligible princess throughout every country, and none of them proved to be equal to him. This first princess he met had the voice of a high-pitched monkey and would not stop talking. The next Princess he met had a voice too soft spoken and too shy to have a decent conversation with. Then the next one was particular with the food she ate and how she was to have it. then the one after that, would jump into a crying fit with any one insensitive word given. Then the last one, wouldn't even acknowledge anything beyond her own looks.
The prince decided if he couldn’t marry a princess, perhaps he would choose a local girl from the village. To meet the village girls, he had the idea of throwing a ball for his kingdom; with negotiations from the king and queen of course. So as was announced to the kingdom:- “Every citizen throughout the land is invited to attend the royal ball by the generosity of our good prince to celebrate and reward every gentleman’s hard work- and please bring your eligible daughters.”
The night of the royal ball had arrived with wondrous enchantment; bright lights and lively music filled the scene and every eligible young lady was there in hopes of capturing the heart of our fine prince. But alas, none proved worthy, each girl seemed as blend as the next. Despite the prince's struggle to find a girl for himself, the grand ballroom was filled with spirited joy from the citizens of the kingdom; even the king and queen (stiff as they are) enjoyed themselves.
After some hours, the prince had finally given up his search to look for the girl that would be equal to him:- “Perhap there just isn't a girl out there for me,” he said to himself. Suddenly, his sights struck and he raised himself as his eyes fell upon an auburn haired girl. Everything surrounding him, every light and every sound, went dim as he gazed upon this angel.
Each curl on her ratient hair shined bright, her complexion and skin clear and pure as ivory,- and her eyes, her eyes, one would say- were her most noticeable of all her features. They shined like bright green emerald diamonds; that would capture anyone’s glaze.
The prince raised himself from his throne and approached her. Her gorgeous green eyes noticed him coming towards her. She looked down to her feet in a bashful manner. The prince as he arrived near her, with a gentle hand, lifted her head up to look at him. He marveled at her beauty in a closer view. With romantic music bursting through the ballroom the prince took her by his side and began to waltz with her.
He couldn’t take his eyes of her the entire time they danced around the room; as the music rolled on for hours long into the night. Yes, they danced all night, without even speaking one word to one another. “For crying out loud! When can we stop!?” thought the exhausted band players. The prince, mesmerized with her beautiful appearance, didn’t think to ask who she was and where she came from. The night went on and he completely missed his chance. The moment the sun was mere minutes away from rising, the girl slipped away from him and she was gone. After he had broken out of his trancelike state of mesmerization, did he realize her absence; and was left bewildered how he would get his chance to see her again when he didn’t get her name, or knew where she lived.
All morning, the emerald eyed girl was all the prince would think about. She had been on his mind for many days; when he traveled the kingdom to search for a girl with those very particular beautiful emerald eyes. He went from house to house asking for any girl who lived there, making fathers angry, and making girls think they had a chance. None of the girls he saw resembled at all like the emerald-eyed girl he danced with.
After a long day's search, he returned to his castle depressed, so depressed that he went straight into the kitchen for an early lunch- or a second breakfast, whichever one. He asked the cook to make his favorite breakfast meal, and then he sat on the kitchen table, sighing over his loss. Only he realized one person was in the kitchen with him, and it was not the cook. This person wasn’t even human. The prince jumped out his chair in complete shock and horror, as he saw some sort of hairy troll sweeping the kitchen floor. This beast, whatever it was, possessed dissolved dark hair covering most of its face; only one eye can be seen peeking out to see the prince and it’s large tooth was noticeable out of its mouth. It’s skin was grey and flaky, and it held the broom with hairy monstrous hands. The prince, unable to bear the sight of the creature, ran out of the kitchen, forgetting the whole idea of a second breakfast entirely.
“Good lord! What in the name of God's trick on humankind was that!?” cried the prince, to the real cook passing through the hall. “Oh, that is my kitchen maid,” the cook explained. The poor thing lost her parents and needed a lonely dark place to work. “Well then, good thing I don’t come down here very often” the prince replied moving on.
To turn his attention away from the fact that an ugly beast is living below his castle, and turned his mind towards his next plan to find his emerald-eyed beauty. Then, he thought of an idea- throw another ball! Yeah, why not, the last one worked. He convinced the king and queen once again, and thus was announced to all in the kingdom:- “Every citizen throughout the land is invited to attend another royal ball in celebration of -- uh glorious harvesting- and please bring your eligible daughters once again.”
Another ball was thrown in the castle, and it was-- not as memorable as the first one, but it was enjoyable enough. All the eligible girls sought for another shot in capturing the prince’s heart, but he ignored all of them, keeping his eye out for his real future wife. Alas, there she was, shining bright as before. She smiled her loving smile. He came to her instantly and asked her for a dance. They danced and this time they talked.
The prince learned, not only was she the most beautiful girl in his world, but she was very clever; for she knew this ball was thrown for her so they could meet once more. He found she was also very sweet and kind; for she loved feeding the birds, and she was very cheerful; for she showed how much she loved the music and the garden outside, and couldn’t help expressing her excitement of the extravagate things she saw, things in which he had also taken for granted. What really had the prince falling deeper into her spell was how much passion she had for life. They occupied one another, long until the music and lights went down. The sun was minutes away from rising. Once the sun had lightened up the shy, he made the first move to kiss her; but before he could touch her lips, however, she ran from him in a fearful state of panic, deserting him once again.
The prince was left still unsatisfied; for he still didn’t know who she was, or where she lived. He was so smitten with her other charming qualities, he had forgotten to ask her the important stuff. With no other plan, he convinced the king and queen to, once again, throw another royal ball. They reacted reluctantly at first, But the prince begged them hard for one last ball, to meet with his future bride again. “Alright,” They replied, “But this will be the final one!”, and thus, another ball was announced to the kingdom again: “Evey citizen throughout the land is invited to the royal ball in celebration of-- whatever you want to celebrate, again please bring you eligible daughters.”
So the night of the final ball had arrived in the castle. The ball was less full this time and hardly anyone cared to dance; for they were still tired from the last one, even the music and food was weak. All the eligible girls didn’t bother the prince this time, either; it would have been pointless. Still the prince didn’t care, he was determined to find his true love again, and ask her who she was, and where she lived, and ask her to marry him.
He found her once again, as fabulous as she appeared on the previous nights. They were the only two couples dancing together that night. All the girls looked upon her with envy and everyone else noted how she was, indeed, a very beautiful girl, but with her attention grabbing beauty, it’s strange how the folk of the land had never seen her before.
The prince stared into the girl's emerald eyes and how perfect they were and how she smiled at him with her perfect smile. He couldn’t resist his desire to finally kiss her soft lips, and so he did with sweet tenderness. He asked her the question he had been waiting to ask her for so long.
Instead of a burst of happiness, the girl frowned and stood very serious. The prince asked her once again, if she would marry him, and be by his side, and one day be his queen. She was puzzled for words. "But you don’t know me,” she pulled herself away from him. To the prince, it didn’t matter- he loved her, and he wanted her forever by his side. She was perfect to him, and she was the only one for him. Her tear shedding eyes looked at him, as she knew she was in love with him in return, but if they were to marry, there was something he had to know about her. “And what is that?” the prince asked. She paused as she was about to speak; fear overcame her, and she ran. “Wait!” the prince cried out, chasing after her. She disappeared into the crowd. He heard her sweet voice in the far distance, telling him “I’m sorry”- and she was seen no more. Once again, she was gone from him.
For days the prince isolated himself, wondering if he would ever see his emerald-eyed beauty again. After a day of compilation, he raised his hopeful heart and his determination to find her returned to him. His last and only plan- was to call for every green eyed girl in the kingdom to come to the castle, and meet the prince himself. They all came, one by one, the prince looked into the eyes of each and every girl who came; but none of the green eyes he saw shined the same way as the girl he was looking for. The hours grew, and the prince fell into despair and had finally given up. Perhaps, he thought,- she didn't really exist, and maybe he is doomed to a life of loneliness; for no girl will ever really be his match.
The prince took his depression to the garden and remained there all night; thinking only of his lost girl. The early morning hour came, the hour before the sun would raise, he heard footsteps approach him. He turned to look- and there she was! she was standing before him. Despite wearing an unflattering dress, she still glowed in beauty. They embraced each other in the dawn morning blossom. “You're really here with me!” he had said to her. “Last we met I asked you to marry me, but you left me before you could answer.” She hesitated to speak. She was terrified that night she told him, but she did love. “Yes, yes I will marry you!” she finally said to him. The prince held her with uncontrollable glee; and told her they would be married off as soon as possible. She stopped him from getting too excited. “If you're going to marry me,” she explained, “there's something you have to know about me.” The prince looked at her confused. She turned her attention to the sun as it rose from the mountains. The warm sunlight touched her face. Suddenly, before the prince’s very eyes, she began to change. Her auburn hair was turning darker, her ivory skin was turning grey and fleks started to sprout, her hands were growing larger and nails sharper, and a pair of large teeth were growing within her mouth. The prince watched in revolution, seeing his charming angel turn into a monstrous troll before him. The only one of her features that remained the same were her queen emerald eyes, which to him, no longer had the same spark of desire as they once did. The prince shook his head in disbelief. He couldn’t understand, how can this be?! He demanded that she tell him how this could be possible. She was cursed to be this way, she explained. Ever since she was a baby, she has been cursed to live in the daylight as a troll, and only at night can she ever be beautiful. “There has to be a way to break it,” said the prince. “Is there a way to break it?.” The troll shocked her head as she wept bitterly. “No, there isn’t.” her parents searched for a way to break the curse for years, only to no avail. She now lives with this curse; and will have to live with it forever. This form she takes on now is part of her as much as her beautiful form. “Will you accept me for who I am?” she asked him, with hopeful teary eyes.
The prince turned away from her in disgust and ordered her to leave his sight. The troll looked at him and pleaded that if he truly loved her he would accept her. The prince looks to her and no longer sees the beautiful charming girl that he dreamed of marrying, nor is she his equal. With nothing more to say to her he demanded her to leave his sight. With tears pouring down her face, she ran from him, crying of a broken heart.
As days went on, the prince still couldn’t take his mind off the girl he was in love with. The troll kitchen maid had apparently left the castle on the day he last saw her. Years went on, and he continued to search for the right woman to be his match to have as his queen, but in the end, he concluded that no other girl had could ever compared to the girl with emerald eyes .
The prince was now at the age of forty and still had no bride. He traveled the kingdom hoping that with some chance he would run into his true love; cured of her ugliness. He saw a girl walking by- he noticed her auburn hair. When she turned to him, he saw her emerald eyes, and knew it was her. At last, after many years he did find his true love. To his surprise, she was not as ugly as she was before, but nor was she as beautiful. Her skin was still quite grey and her horrid teeth were the same. He was very nervous at the sight of her and she reacted to this unexpected meeting with neutral feelings.
Apparently after she had left the castle, she found work at the local bakery, and the barker didn’t mind her appearance at all; and his son was really kind to her. They grew to be friends and he helped realize it’s not her appearance that makes her attractive, but instead by expressing her inner good qualities, her bad ones will disappear; now her confidence is greater than ever was before. She and the baker’s son are now married and as happy as ever. As for the feelings she once had for the prince, any love for him she once felt for him are now gone. With nothing more to say to the prince, she wished him best of luck for the future and went on her way.
It was so unbelievable to the prince, that she was the same girl he had fallen for; it’s as if she wasn’t her at all. To him, he’ll always remember her as the shining angel with emerald eyes, the girl he could have had but now will never be his, and he would lament his loss of her for the rest of his life.
Thank you so much if you read all this!
It’s my first short story (or at least my first completed one)
Please comment and let me know what I could fix for my future writing. I would very apricate it. ^-^
