Pride and Prejudice, chapters 52 & 58
The count of Monte-Cristo
Dumas
"... [George R.R. Martin] alluded to the fact that Jon and Dany were the point, kind of. That, at the time, there was a huge, vast array of characters, and Jon was a lowly, you know, bastard son. So it wasn't clear to us at the time, but he did sort of say things that made it clear that the meeting and the convergence of Jon and Dany were sort of the point of the series."

emily brontë receives the first kill yourself anon in 1848
Look. I am a smart person who studied English Literature in university. There are indeed cases in old literature where people who are white are likened to “gypsies” for some weird metaphor (Maggie Tulliver from The Mill on the Floss) or where a previously-assumed-as-not-white character turns out to be White All Along (Esmeralda, The Sheik).
Heathcliff is the one (1) major case where this is not the case. He is constantly called a “gypsy” by a wide array of characters in a wide array of situations, he is also called Lascar and Indian, he speaks a foreign language upon entering the household, and he is never revealed to be White and Wealthy All Along - to the point that he is considered a bit of a subversion of that trope. (Even Charlotte Bronte defined Heathcliff as “a black gipsy cub” in a letter she wrote to her publisher while Emily Bronte was still alive). And since Heathcliff is not a real person but only exists in the text of Wuthering Heights, the text of Wuthering Heights constantly calling him “gypsy” and other ethnic or racist epithets without any evidence to the contrary makes Heathcliff not-white.
This adaptation already passed the point of mere “whitewashing”, Fennell casting a brown Edgar Linton opposed to a white Heathcliff makes this adaptation’s racism aggressive instead of just ignorant. But even outside of this adaptation, why would you want to make maybe the only famous main character of color in pre-20th century Western literary canon (other than Othello) into a white guy? Why would you want to subvert a subversion?

Another one I should've posted here before! These are the full versions of all 4 captive prince fanjackets I did over a period of a couple months (the alt text serves double duty for these, since describing the pics spills out my symbolic reasonings for the covers).
This was a project so dear to me and I hope you enjoy!
