The Drunken Groom’s Mother (modern Au)
The wedding had been beautiful, the kind of ceremony that made even thugs tear up. The sun dipped over the sea, the waves golden in the late light, and their son, Cole, stood proudly with his new spouse under a garland of flowers and sails.
Shanks was all smiles, loud laughs, and half-drunk toasts. Buggy—well, Buggy was trying very, very hard not to cry.
Her makeup was already smudged, the glitter of her lipstick fading into her grin as she clutched her glass of champagne. “My baby boy’s married…” she slurred proudly, wobbling in her heels. “He used to fit in a barrel, Shanks. A barrel! Now he’s—hic—taller than me!”
Shanks laughed, slipping a big hand around her shoulders. “You did good, Buggs. He’s got your stubbornness and my charm.”
“Your what?” she snapped, swatting his chest with the back of her hand, but the smile betrayed her. “Charm, my ass…”
Hours passed. The music played. Cole and Law were dancing under the fairy lights. Buggy had long stopped counting her drinks. Shanks was mostly busy making sure she didn’t climb onto the table again to shout about “the miracle of childbirth.”
By the end of the night, Buggy was absolutely plastered — giggling into her glass, face flushed and hair undone.
When Shanks finally came to help her up, she blinked blearily at him. “Whaaaat do you want, mister?”
“Come on, Buggs,” he said softly, looping an arm around her. “Let’s get you home.”
She stumbled a bit, squinting up at him. “Home? Ha! I can’t go home with you. I have a husband, you know!”
Shanks froze. Then laughed under his breath. “Oh? You do?”
“Yeah,” she huffed, wobbling dramatically and poking him in the chest. “He’s handsome. Red hair. Always gets into trouble. Big stupid grin. But not you.”
He bit the inside of his cheek, trying not to burst out laughing. “He sounds… familiar.”
“Yeah,” she said dreamily, swaying slightly. “He’s the love of my life. Dumb as a rock. But he makes me laugh.”
Shanks smiled , a little sad, a little fond, as he brushed a loose strand of blue hair from her face. “He must be a lucky man, then.”
Buggy blinked up at him, squinting like she was trying to remember something important. “…Maybe he is.”
She leaned into his chest and promptly fell asleep.
Shanks sighed, chuckling as he lifted her up bridal-style. “Even drunk, you still know how to make my heart ache, Buggs.”
As he carried her down the path back to the ship, Cole and Law watched from afar, smiling quietly.
“Your parents are… something else,” Law whispered.
Cole smiled softly. “Yeah. That’s one way to put it.”
And behind them, the sound of the sea rolled on, just like it always had for Buggy and Shanks messy, loud, and full of love.
