A tumblr I have because all the cool kids have one but God's honest truth is I don't get it and still use my LJ and DW to post fic and stuff. Basically I'm just here to look at pretty pictures.
The Renegade Tiny Book Bang is an annual event where binders create tiny books (smaller than quarto size) from typesets created by others. I submitted two typesets and applied for one, and got Wise Guys by Ladygray99. It's letter octavo, so 4.25" tall by 2.75" wide.
This is a Numb3rs casefic involving a serial killer who's targeting children, while Don finds out more about Charlie's unexpected friends from college. I was a big fan of the show years ago but it had never occurred to me to check out the fanfic, so this was an absolute delight.
The expectation for the event is to make a copy for the typesetter and one for yourself, but the option is always there to offer one to the author as well. This year I did, so the goal was three "identical" copies.
Well, I ended up with three fraternal copies.
The cloth cover is quilting cotton (a fat quarter bought on clearance, RIP Joann Fabrics) filled with paste - this process involves brushing the cloth with starch paste (cornstarch in my case) and drying it on a flat surface (cheap plastic placemats I bought for the purpose). It makes the fabric stiffer and helps keep glue from striking through. This particular one doesn't go with the show colors or anything, but I thought it looked a bit like a map.
The all cloth one is my copy. The one with the gray paper is the typesetter copy, and the one with the blue strip is the author copy. The scatterplots on the author copy came from various online statistics references. My copy is a little smaller than the other two because the textblock looked more raggedy than the others once it was sewn and I made the (ill-advised) decision to try to trim it. I managed to even the trim out, but it's still a bit uneven which is why it's my copy.
The endpapers came from a Library of Congress map of Newark ca. 1904. A significant bit of the fic takes place in modern day Newark.
The books are slightly rounded (this is the first time I've rounded using a hammer, and I will definitely be doing that again, it got such a better result than I'm used to) and the spines were lined with paste paper before casing in. These are small pieces of paste paper I was just trying out patterns on, so I don't have a lot of good ideas for them, but I like hiding a little something I made in there as the spine lining.
The endbands on the typesetter and author copies are sewn with buttonhole thread, but I ran out of steam and just used a salvaged faux endband on my own copy. All are red and white to match the cover cloth.
Overall it has been a fun event, as it is every year! Tiny books are a little nervewracking to work on, but very satisfying in the end.

Will is actually taking time off and missing a match to go to Amsterdam to support his girlfriend at her first big art show. It's weirdly Jamie who is backing him on this.

On Friday afternoon, August 1st, 2025, I said good-bye to my precious Keely. There was no one reason why. It was simply a matter of age and mortality.
She was ready.
I never will be.
I hoped she would live to August 15th, an entirely selfish desire that one could easily assume, once you know the date, was based on wanting her to make it to my birthday. But no. Since my childhood I have had…
In a powerful Mark Ruffalo-produced documentary, a long-running battle for land that was once stolen is brought to light
“...It’s not about property. It’s not about a barbed wire fence, something that’s ‘this is mine, this is yours.’ It’s fundamentally looking at land as something that you are a part of and hold a responsibility to look after.” -Jesse ShortBull

anarchistoscarwilde replied to your post:charlie and spencer just sort of cooing over each…
i don’t know who these people are but I am extremely interested in neurodivergent prodigy babs; tell me more
Charlie Eppes is from a tv show called Numb3rs. He’s an ethereal delicate Jewish fairy prince. And/or a math professor.
he’s made of butterfly wings and roses and dark wire and glass
I’ve seen a fair bit of this show but only recently started watching it in order
he gets super focused on work a lot and easily gets detached from personal stuff in general. I dunno what canon is on his brain but I’m going with like, bipolar disorder (cyclothymia?) and like adhd or autism maybe.
anyway.
he knows so much fucking math. math is his life. he loves math so much he uses it to solve crimes for his brother, an fbi agent.
he lives with his dad. one time his dad wanted to sell their house and he was like OMG DAD NO and dad was like DAD YES and he did NOT want to move out of his thinking place so he BOUGHT THE HOUSE FROM HIS DAD.
then there’s spencer reid
half child prodigy, half dorky-but-reputable prom date. he’s from a show called Criminal Minds, about some cool FBI profiler buddies who solve ridiculously gory crimes every goddamn fucking week. my friend detectiveoscarwilde thinks i like the show itself, but nah mostly i tolerate it for morgan
(i could tolerate the WORLD for you morgan)
spencer reid is one of those went to college at fourteen, unbearably delicate and precocious, sheltered but enthusiastic types. much like charlie, he will tip over in a stiff breeze. I think detectiveoscarwilde told me he’s canonically autistic but I’m not sure. his mom has schizophrenia and he’s concerned he may develop it, but I’m only like two seasons in so IDK if maybe we gET A SCHIZOPHRENIC PROTAGONIST OH MAN WANT THIS. anyway he’s a lil nerd. he does magic tricks and wears fucking sweaters. his friends love and protect him. look at his oscar wilde hair.
I have never watched Criminal Minds but that is the best description of Charlie EVER!
(And as a note from someone who has seen every episode twice there was never any canon discussion of Charlie's brain other than 'really smart' but I always write him as bipolar. It just seems to fit.)
My friends just had their first child. He has been diagnosed with Lissencephaly which is a rare and incurable neurological disorder.
I don’t ask much of my followers. But I am stopping you right now and asking you to AT LEAST reblog this.
Jaxon’s parents are good people who have very little money. I know we’re all strapped for cash, but like I said, if you can’t donate, please AT LEAST REBLOG this.
I'm really glad Ichabod and Katrina finally had a talk. All marriages have a few little lies and omissions, usually around cooking and inlaws, but Katrina forgot to mention some pretty big things to Ichabod before he died.
(And yes I ship Ichabod and Abbie but I'd get pissed if they broke up Katrina and Ichabod just to push forward some romantic plot line, especially when we're only in season two. I shipped Mulder and Scully. Kids these days don't appreciate what a slow burn really is.)
