"Princes.... shouldn't be alone without their bodyguards...who knows what might happen?" 'He' is a bit timid, still a bit wary though he's been his guard for almost six months. But he's undeniably strong and determined.
The Prince sighed into his hand, having been caught sneaking off again.
“It’s the palace. It’s perfectly safe. I’m not going to die just because you aren’t at my side constantly. I’ve managed for sixteen years without a bodyguard and I certainly don’t need one now.”
“… I told you hiring that boy would be a mistake.”
“Well what else were we supposed to do? He needs protection, but after he chases off the last one it’s been next to impossible to find someone to take the position, no matter how much I raised their pay.”
“And now look what’s happened!”
“Aurelia, darling, you worry too much. I’m sure he’s fine…”
Conscious slowly crawled back into the corners of his mind. He was lying down, somewhere soft and warm. Voices… he knew those voices. His eyes cracked open.
“M-mother…?”
“Odhran, sweetheart, you’re awake,” he felt a cool hand against this forehead.
“Wh-where’s Glynn?” he asked.
“That young man is packing his bags,” the Queen nodded.
“What? No!” he tried to sit up.
“Sweetheart you need to lie dow-”
“No! You can’t send him away. He didn’t do anything wrong. I over exerted myself, that’s all. I just wanted to have some fun. Please, don’t send him away. I actually like this one. He’s… He’s my friend,” he looked pleading at his father.
The King pursed his lips, “He stays.”
“Caldre-”
“Darling, be reasonable. Odhran would have gotten in trouble with or without him. And honestly, where else are we going to find someone the boy actually gets on with,” he looked to a guard standing at the edge of the room. “Go inform the Prince’s Protector he still has a job.”
Fired. It’s not even been that long and Glynn’s been fired. Fuck. Dammit. Of course. This is karma. Why did I ever think that a girl could be a knight? I was a fool. Alone in the privacy of the rooms assigned for the job, Glynda Arduenna was packing her bags. She had no idea where she was going next, but chances were she’d never find another job as even a guard at this point. Getting fired from this job would pay a heavy blow to any prospective employer. Dammit. And he was nice too. He…was a friend. She hoped he’d be okay. No one would tell her anything.
A knock came at the Protector’s door followed by the near immediate entrance of a guard. He stepped inside and stood to attention.
“His Majesty, King Caldre wished me to inform you that your position has been restored,” he said. “And His Highness, Prince Odhran has requested your presence.”
She started for a moment, switching back to ‘Glynn mode’ so to speak, before turning around. Glynn frowned for a moment, eyes widening in surprise has he listened to the message. Wh--oh thank god. “I---I see. Thank you.” He nodded. “Just a moment.” Glynn quickly put down his bags and moved to follow the guard.

A perceptive eye may have caught that strange motion blur from before just as he overtook his opponent, but then, perhaps it was just a trick. After a few minutes of cooling down their horses in the nearby paddock the two boys lead their horses into the stables to be brushed down.
“I want to thank you, Glynn,” he said, as he shooed away the stable hand. He would brush Aurie down himself. “I can’t remember the last time I had this much fun.”
He’d hear the mixture of curses and laughter as he overtook Glynn in their race. It was moments after he’d pulled into the stables that Glynn arrived himself. “It’s no problem. I promise. It was fun for both of us.” Glynn wrapped his arms around his own hose’s neck–hugging it. The horse made a sound of approval at that.
Odhran laughed again, leading his horse back to her stall. He made surprisingly quickly work of removing her saddle and carrying it back to it’s hanging peg. The moment he set it down the world suddenly spun violently. His grip increased on the saddle, holding himself upright, waiting for the spinning to stop. It cleared a moment later and he swallowed, shaking it away.
Picking up a brush, he returned to his horse like nothing had happened. She nickered happily, snuffing at his face.
He doesn’t see the Prince stumble slightly, too distracted brushing out his own horse. “I hope we can do something like that again at some point.” Glynn said softly, almost hesitantly. By all standards–it wasn’t his place to make suggestions. Then again…they were friends, right? And that was…above royal position?
“I’m hoping we can do something like this again tomorrow,” he laughed, running a brush down his own horse’s neck.
If I stop feeling so nauseous… he swallowed hard. And if the room will stop spinning.
He stepped back from his own horse, having finished the clean up. Moving towards the Prince, he called out– “That would be nice. I like that idea.”
His stomach turned violently as the world continued to spin. He closed his eyes and swallowed again. At this rate he might…
“G-Glynn…”
He reached out to grab Aurie’s bridle but missed. He slumped over onto they hay, the room fading to black.
He shouted, panicking as he used his aura to lift the Prince and bolt back to the castle at top speed. Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck--

I’ve always wanted to help people, to be a warrior. People didn’t really believe I could do it, so I left home and decided to go find someone to protect.” He shrugged. ‘It led me here.”
“And had protecting a stubborn Prince been all you dreamed it’d be?” he grinned, though a touch of seriousness colored his voice.
“I haven’t been doing this long enough to form a solid opinion, but you’re certainly more interesting than I expected.” He said honestly.
“… Oh. Yeah, well, I probably won’t be quite as much trouble for you from here on out. Truth is, I actually kind of like you. And I’ve never really had a real friend,” he stared down at his hands, kneading a thumb into the opposing palm. “Though, I hope that after today, that changes. Maybe… maybe that’s what my parents wanted, what they were thinking when they assigned you to me. Do you think… would you want to be more than just my Protector? Do you think you could also be my friend?”
So that’s who he was beneath all that stubbornness. Just a lonely boy in need of a friend.
Glynn thought about that for a moment, blinking in surprise. He didn’t know that that was the case– it seemed unlikely that someone would think that it would be a good idea to have one’s protector be their best friend. Then again, would it even be a good idea? Glynn was…well…hiding a rather big part of themself. Screw it. “I’d….like that. I’d like that a lot. I’ve never really had a friend–that would be nice.” He smiled.
Odhran smiled back, a softer, lopsided grin full of nothing but sincerity.
“Thanks, Glynn. I… I’m glad. My parents made a good choice picking you. You’re the only Protector I’ve ever actually liked. And thanks… for not treating me like I’m fragile.”
“You asked not to be. It would be rude to do otherwise.” He said, reaching out impulsively to put a hand on Odhran’s shoulder. “I just hope that I can be the friend you want and need, without being annoying.”
Odhran met that gaze, “You’ve already been the friend I needed and now… now your the friend I want as well. And if you get annoying… well, isn’t that what friends do? Annoy each other? But… in a good way?”
“Is there such thing as good annoying?” He actually looked rather startled at that possibility. “…maybe. I’m not sure. But I do want to be friends.”
He shrugged, “I don’t know. But I guess we can find out together. Come on, I’ll race you back to the stables.”
“You’re on!” And without another word, Glynn turned his horse around and they took off. “One-two-three-go!” Dork.

Odhran ran his horse his horse across the open field, wind whipping his silver blonde hair back off his forehead. Thankfully he was none to fond of wearing his crown otherwise he might have lost it as they cantered across the field. His horse bounced and shook her mane, happy to be out of her stall and with her rider who’s visits had become more rare.
Their pace slowed as they approached the treeline, dropping down to just a walk.
The Knight followed behind, not moving as fast as the Prince. Glynn was much more comfortable at a slower speed than him, and it took him longer to catch up with his charge. Glynn and their horse fell into equal pace with Odhran’s, taking his right side. “Having fun?”
“Yeah,” he smiled. “For the first time in… I don’t even know, I am. I did this once with my last protector and he carried me back to the palace over his shoulder. Apparently he was under the impression that princes aren’t allowed to have fun.”
He let his reins slacken, giving Aurie the freedom to walk down the path as her own pace. She knew the way, of course, so he didn’t give it a second thought.
“But I am curious about one thing, well, a few things, actually. How did someone your age become a knight? And what made you want to become a Protector?”

Thankfully he was none to fond of wearing his crown otherwise he might have lost it as they cantered across the field. His horse bounced and shook her mane, happy to be out of her stall and with her rider who’s visits had become more rare.
Their pace slowed as they approached the treeline, dropping down to just a walk.
The Knight followed behind, not moving as fast as the Prince. Glynn was much more comfortable at a slower speed than him, and it took him longer to catch up with his charge. Glynn and their horse fell into equal pace with Odhran’s, taking his right side. “Having fun?”
“Yeah,” he smiled. “For the first time in… I don’t even know, I am. I did this once with my last protector and he carried me back to the palace over his shoulder. Apparently he was under the impression that princes aren’t allowed to have fun.”
He let his reins slacken, giving Aurie the freedom to walk down the path as her own pace. She knew the way, of course, so he didn’t give it a second thought.
“But I am curious about one thing, well, a few things, actually. How did someone your age become a knight? And what made you want to become a Protector?”
“Was this the military guy? I’m not surprised, he sounded pretty rude. I’d fight him.” Glynn leaned down to stroke his horse’s mane. She let out a pleased huff at that. “I don’t know what to say. I’ve always wanted to help people, to be a warrior. People didn’t really believe I could do it, so I left home and decided to go find someone to protect.” He shrugged. ‘It led me here.”
“And had protecting a stubborn Prince been all you dreamed it’d be?” he grinned, though a touch of seriousness colored his voice.
“I haven’t been doing this long enough to form a solid opinion, but you’re certainly more interesting than I expected.” He said honestly.
"Princes.... shouldn't be alone without their bodyguards...who knows what might happen?" 'He' is a bit timid, still a bit wary though he's been his guard for almost six months. But he's undeniably strong and determined.
The Prince sighed into his hand, having been caught sneaking off again.
“It’s the palace. It’s perfectly safe. I’m not going to die just because you aren’t at my side constantly. I’ve managed for sixteen years without a bodyguard and I certainly don’t need one now.”
Glynn laughed, a high bright sound, and steered his horse out of the stable. Once out, he pushed the horse to race after the Prince. “Can’t let him have all the fun, can we.”
Odhran ran his horse his horse across the open field, wind whipping his silver blonde hair back off his forehead. The Prince hastily hung up his fencing gear, returning the practice sword to the arms master, and lead off in the direction of the stable. After much arguing with on of the stable hands, he finally convinced them to let him tack his own horse.
“I’m not helpless,” he muttered, fetching his saddle. “Why must everyone insist on doing for me things I can do myself?”
“Perhaps because they’re hired to do so?” Glynn stretched, glad to be out of the mildly confining sparring gear. “They mean well, they really do. I think they’re just not used to the idea of a royal who is willing to do something for himself.” Glynn hefted his own saddle, being careful to set up his horse properly. Even having done this a thousand times, care never hurt.
“I… I understand that,” he sighed, checking over all of his own straps. “But it’s always been this way. Everyone treats me like I’m fragile, like I’ll break if I do anything for myself. They send for a doctor every time I sneeze. But it always comes down to the same thing. I’m perfectly healthy, I can do things for myself. They don’t need to baby me.”
He ran a hand down the neck of his chestnut mare.
“I just wish they’d stop treating me like I’m made of glass.”
“Prove them wrong then.” Glynn said. “Prove them wrong and be the best person you can. I’ll help you get there, I promise.” He smiled, climbing onto his own horse.
“That’s easier said than done,” he answered, mounting up as well. “Whenever I try, they just restrict me further. But you might be right about that last part.”

A touch of wickedness came to the Prince’s grin, “Oh, you won’t be able to stop me. Especially now that I know what you can do.”
Now back on his feet, Odhran brushed himself off.
“Speaking of larger fields, what would you think of going for a ride?” he asked, a new found brightness in his eyes. “Normally my parents won’t let me, but what sort of trouble can I really get into with you around? It’ll be fun. And I give my word I won’t try to run away from you.”
“Just because you know what I can do, doesn’t mean it will change anything. I’m still good.” His eyes lit up too at the mention of going out. He liked riding. It was a fun. “If there’s no rules against it, I’d love to.”
“Yes… but you don’t know what I can do,” he said. “And there shouldn’t be. My general motto is, if the palace guards don’t stop me from doing it then there aren’t any rules against it.”
Glynn snorted. “That’s one way to look at it, certainly.” He sheathed his sword at his side and turned towards the direction of the stables. “Well then, shall we?”
