umm so just as a reminder, fantine cannot consent when she’s doing sex work. it is entirely coerced. she cannot consent. she is under duress. when you write her ‘doing work’, you are writing out her assaults lol
so what we're not gonna do on this blog is graphically write out fantine's sexual abuse and trafficking...
Part One: Fantine
Les Misérables | Fantine's deterioration Illustrated by Rene Giffey (French comic, 1949)
⠀⠀❝ she's asleep, ❞ the mother announces as she enters, at last dropping into the the open spot on the squat little couch next to anna in the living room. there's an instantly relieved smile as she looks to them. in the time since putting cosette down, fantine has had a moment to finally change into her nightdress & unbind her hair, & she fiddles with the neck of the material as she gets comfortable.
⠀⠀❝ I am surprised she did not want one of your stories before bed — I think we exhausted her. the market was a wonderful idea, ❞ she remarks, lowering her hand, only to just reach for anna. she hums something at that moment, gingerly caressing her jaw, before wordlessly leaning forth to give a soft peck to her cheek.
⠀⠀❝ thank you... ❞ she mumurs, & fantine pulls back slightly, an awkward laugh on her lips. ❝ I wasn't sure how else to calm her down. she's at that age... ❞
@butnobodyhome plotted a long time ago for a starter.
that 'she should've been at the club' meme doesn't work for fantine bc she was INDEED at the club she just was ALSO working as a grisette!!!!!!!
@lafantine liked for a starter
Cosette liked Paris so far. Well, she liked being with her mother. It was preferable to being away from Fantine, for she was her world. She was struggling with the change of name for her maman. Aunt, Auntie, was an adjustment that the chubby child costantly needed to be reminded of.
“ Ma— Auntie. ” A self correction made almost daily. She toddles over to her mother, whom had just entered the door of the small flat. A large smile on her face. She still did not know when Maman was okay or when Aunie was preferred, but she was trying.
⠀⠀the days she spends in toil are well-worth it when cosette is concerned. fantine's hands ache from the factory, her feet drag with every step, but her heart is light in her chest — she had her daughter, her precious little thing, waiting at home with marguerite in the next room over. that was more than enough consolation for the mother. while it is not a true home, only a temporary rented flat to get their bearings & allow fantine to quickly make it to the factory & back, cosette fills the dismal space with so much love.
⠀⠀upon entering, she hears that tiny voice; instantly all weariness fades from fantine's face, instead replaced by a soft, indulgent smile. her heart aches faintly. it was for both of their safeties that cosette was to call her something else, that fantine should present as a family member merely trying to help an abandoned child... it does not stop the initial pang of hurt, but she reminds herself that cosette had no way of knowing when it was appropriate to call her which name.
⠀⠀fantine removes her heavily patched bag from her shoulder, placing it aside on the small, squat chair by the door. she bends down on a knee, arms already open, eager to hold her little one close once again. ❝ you may always call me maman when it is just you & I, ❞ she beams, tucking a stray hair back behind cosette's ear. ❝ I hate asking you to pretend, ma petite. but it has kept us together... ❞
⠀⠀a sigh. fantine shields her pain from view as best as she can, instead opting to content herself on the sensation of cradling her daughter.
⠀⠀❝ how I have missed you, ❞ she whispers. gently she brushes back cosette's hair from her forehead, giving a soft kiss there. she pulls back slightly to take her daughter in fully. ❝ how are you feeling? are you hungry? did you sleep enough? ❞
little known fact but when you’re watching lm, you’re now catholic for the next 2 and a half hours! it’s true!!!! alain and claude told me themselves!!!

he hovered on the doorframe , for a moment . watching the work of her hands , prowess all commoners & bourgeoisie savoured , & feeling the itch on his own . he dares not sit close to his typewriter , even when christian hears it begging for repairs , even for use . but regardless of the urgency of its call , he pretends not to listen .
scratches the fuzz around jaw & mouth , eyes lost its chipper shine . " mm ? " he inquires , answering his poorly performed question with the sight of her hand , coaxing . he releases tense posture — arms that were first crossed tightly against chest drop to his sides , walking into the room in silence . he drags a chair to place beside fantine , & seizes a moment to let his hand fiddle with the end of blonde locks . with a deep , quivering breath , he leans into fantine's shoulder , & drops his eyes shut .
⠀⠀it is unmistakable, the change in him. the mother is no stranger to the loss he mourns, nor to the power it wields over him; it is like seeing a miserable reflection, he experiencing a separation from self. he had lost his other half. the absence of satine echoes throughout the underbelly of paris. it is this separation that causes her own heart to ache... all too intimately did she know what it was like to no longer have someone you loved.
⠀⠀at least cosette still lived.
⠀⠀( fantine hopes. she cannot afford to think otherwise. )
⠀⠀she slides the finished shirt off her lap & onto the awaiting table at her side, carefully sticking her needle to the pincushion in the basket at her feet. in the time he takes to process what she requested of him, she has carefully brushed the stray threads off her lap, & in one smooth motion she beckons again — as christian finally makes his way over her smile grows slightly, though it does not entirely reach her eyes.
⠀⠀fantine feels especially protective of his good heart as these days drag on. he bleeds for his naivety; something that she, too, had experienced. at last her gentle hand reaches once he is settled: she cradles the back of his head with the care of someone knowing they are holding something with the chance of breaking it.
⠀⠀she does not speak for some moments, allowing for the melancholy silence to drag on. it was easier than filling it with useless pity. her other hand, more hesitant than the first, joins in holding christian; it rests against his shoulder blades, fingers gently tracing an unseen pattern in an attempt to soothe.
⠀⠀❝ I do not expect you to speak to me. I am happy to have you as you are, ❞ fantine whispers as quietly as she can manage, doing her best to prevent the startling transition from the lull of nothing to conversation. she tucks a few curls behind his ear, adding thoughtfully, ❝ you need only look at me again before you leave. that is all I ask. now... ❞ a soft breath is taken. she leans down, lips just barely pressing to the top of his head.
⠀⠀❝ would you like a story? a song? ❞ she asks. ❝ or do you need quiet? ❞
true facts - the only role i ever wanted to play in a musical was fantine. thank u for making her blonde btw. i love anne’s portrayal but I THINK SHE NEEDS TO BE BLONDE
rose did you know my heart just grew THREE whole sizes for you... 🥺🥺🥺🥺 OH MY GOSHHHHH. FELT. I WANNA PLAY HER SO BAD LOL but !!!!!!!!! YOU SEE MY VISION I'M LITERALLY SO HAPPY HAHAHASDFGH
⠀⠀the leftover thread is snipped & the shears are set aside, fantine carefully running a hand down the now hemmed shirt. there's a slight nod of approval, if to no one but herself; it would do, despite how her tired hands ached. she sighs & straightens in the little wooden chair, managing a glance up.
⠀⠀the faintest smile crosses her lips. it is near-impossible to forget she has company — something that she would always savor — & she feels indulgent as the hour grows late.
⠀⠀❝ come to me, ❞ she beckons at last, a hand outstretched, ❝ & rest against my shoulder... ❞
open starter, mutuals only.
me, barely writing as it is: i would love some ships for fantine-
HADESTOWN SENTENCE STARTERS - PT II
taken from the broadway cast album. feel free to change pronouns, etc.
HEY LITTLE SONGBIRD
‘ hey, little songbird. ’ ’ i’m a busy man, and i can’t stay long. ’ ‘ cat got your tongue? ’ ‘ it’s always a pity for one so pretty and young when poverty comes to clip your wings and knock the wind right out of your lungs. ’ ‘ nobody sings on empty. ’ ‘ i want a nice soft place to land. i want to lie down forever. ’ ‘ you’ve got something fine. ’ ‘ the choice is yours, if you’re willing to choose, seeing as you’ve got nothing to lose. ’ ‘ i could use a canary. ’ ‘ suddenly, nothing is as it was. ’ ‘ wasn’t it gonna be the two of us? ‘ ‘ let me guess: he’s some kind of poet, and he’s penniless. ’ ‘ hey, why not fly south for the winter? ’ ‘ look all around you. see how the vipers and vultures surround you. and they’ll take you down, they’ll pick you clean if you hang around such a desperate scene. ’ ‘ people get mean when the chips are down. ’
WHEN THE CHIPS ARE DOWN
‘ what is it? ’ ‘ it’s your ticket. ’ ‘ life ain’t easy. life ain’t fair. a girl’s gotta fight for her rightful share. ’ ‘ what you gonna do when the chips are down? ’ ‘ help yourself, to hell with the rest. even the one who loves you best. ’ ‘ oh, my aching heart… ’ ‘ take if you can, give if you must. ’ ‘ ain’t nobody but yourself to trust. ’ ‘ aim for the heart, shoot to kill. if you don’t do it, then the other one will. ’ ‘ the first shall be first, and the last shall be last. cast your eyes to heaven, you get a knife in the back. ’ ‘ nobody’s righteous. nobody’s proud. nobody’s innocent now that the chips are down. ’
GONE, I’M GONE
‘ my heart is yours. ’ ‘ my heart is yours, always was and will be. ’ ‘ my heart is yours, always was and will be. it’s my gut i can’t ignore; ____, i’m hungry. ’ ‘ oh, my heart, it aches to stay—but the flesh will have its way. ’ ‘ the way is dark and long. ’ ‘ i’m already gone. ’ ‘ go ahead and lay the blame. talk of virtue, talk of sin. ’ ‘ wouldn’t you have done the same in my shoes, in my skin? ’ ‘ you can have your principles when you’ve got a bellyful. but hunger has a way with you. ’
WAIT FOR ME
‘ hey, the big artiste! ain’t you working on your masterpiece? ’ ‘ where is she? ’ ‘ what do you care? ’ ‘ what do you care? you’ll find another muse somewhere. ’ ‘ why do want to know? ’ ‘ wherever you are is where i’ll go. ’ ‘ i called your name before i went, but i guess you weren’t listening. ’ ‘ how far would you go for me? ’ ‘ how far would i go for you? to the end of time, to the end of the earth. ’ ‘ there is another way, but i ain’t supposed to say. ’ ‘ wait for me. ’ ‘ wait for me, i’m coming with you. ’ ‘ i’m coming too. ’ ‘ who are you? ’ ‘ where do you think you’re going? ’ ‘ who do you think you are? ’ ‘ you’re on the lam, you’re on the run. don’t give your name: you don’t have one. ’ ‘ don’t look no one in the eye. this town’ll try to suck you dry. they’ll suck your brains, they’ll suck your breath. they’ll pluck the heart right out your chest. they’ll truss you up in your sunday best and stuff your mouth with cotton. ’ ‘ i hear the walls repeating the falling of my feet, and it sounds like drumming. ’
WHY WE BUILD THE WALL
‘ why do we build the wall? we build the wall to keep us free. ’ ‘ how does the wall keep us free? the wall keeps out the enemy. ’ ‘ who do we call the enemy? the enemy is poverty. ’ ‘ they want what we have got. ’ ‘ the war is never won. ’ ‘ there are papers to be signed. step into my office. ’ ‘ a lot can happen behind closed doors, that’s for sure—that’s a fact. but a lot can happen on the factory floor when the foreman turns his back. ’ ‘ anybody want a drink? ’
OUR LADY OF THE UNDERGROUND
‘ i don’t know about you, but if you’re like me, then hanging around this old manhole’s just bringing you down. ’ ‘ you could use a little pick-me-up. ’ ‘ i can give you what it is you crave. ’ ‘ come here, let me guess: it’s the little things you miss. ’ ‘ ask me, and you shall receive. ’ ‘ or maybe these just ain’t enough? maybe you’re looking for some stronger stuff. ’ ‘ wipe away your tears. i know how you feel. ’ ‘ how long’s it been? ’ ‘ a little moonshine ain’t no sin. ’ ‘ what the boss don’t know, the boss won’t mind. ’
WAY DOWN HADESTOWN (REPRISE)
‘ the deal is signed? about time. ’ ‘ i did what i had to do. ’ ‘ they kept their heads down low. you couldn’t quite see their faces right. ’ ‘ they called it “freedom”. ‘ ‘ doesn’t anybody hear me? ’ ‘ they can hear, but they don’t care. ’ ‘ no one has a name down here. ’ ‘ he set you free to work yourself into the ground. ’ ‘ they can look, but they don’t see. ’ ‘ your eyes will look like that someday. ’ ‘ you kissed your little life goodbye. ’ ‘ so, what was your name again? ’ ‘ you’ve already forgotten. ’ ‘ a lot of souls have got to die to keep the rust belt rolling. ’
FLOWERS
‘ what i wanted was to fall asleep, to close my eyes and disappear. ’ ‘ i trembled when he laid me out. ’ ‘ you won’t feel a thing. ’ ‘ dreams are sweet until they’re not. men are kind until they aren’t. ’ ‘ is anybody listening? ’ ‘ i open my mouth, and nothing comes out. ’ ‘ come and find me lying in the bed i made. ’
COME HOME WITH ME (REPRISE)
‘ come home with me. ’ ‘ i called your name, before. ’ ‘ whatever happened, i’m to blame. ’ ‘ you called my name. ’ ‘ how’d you get here? ’ ‘ i sang a song so beautiful, the stones wept and they let me in. and i can sing us home again. ’
PAPERS
‘ i don’t think we’ve met before. ’ ‘ don’t know who the hell you are, but i can tell you don’t belong. ’ ‘ you stay out of this! ’ ‘ you better run. ’ ‘ i’m not going back alone. ’ ‘ who the hell do you think you are? ’ ‘ who the hell do you think you’re talking to? ’
NOTHING CHANGES
‘ why go against the grain? why swim upstream? ’ ‘ it ain’t no use, you’re bound to lose. ’ ‘ why get wet? why break a sweat? why waste your precious breath? ’ ‘ nothing changes, anyhow. ’
