Elsa hadn't realized how desperately she had longed for her mother's embrace. But now that her mother was holding her, Elsa couldn't imagine how she had gone so long without it.
"Mama, so much has changed, I found Ahtohallan, and Anna is Queen of Arendelle. Why didn't you ever tell us you were Northuldra, did Papa know?"
THE STREAM OF WORDS TOOK A moment to settle in Iduna's mind, and she pulled away -- only slightly, just enough to see her daughter's face. The secrets of the past truly had come out in her absence, if just those few statements were to be believed.
She swallowed, trying to fathom where to start. Anna was queen? What had happened? Elsa seemed alright, here as she was in her arms. And that story tale river of old. So, it had been real after all. Steeling herself, Iduna decided to start with the direct question, despite her own bubbling up her throat.
"By the end he knew," she said softly, remembering the last normal conversation she had had with her husband, tears pricking at her eyes once more. I had to tell him why I was so adamant about our⦠our last trip. I kept it secret to protect myself. And later the two of you."
Tears welled up in Elsaās eyes. She'd never thought she'd see her mother again, yet here she was standing before her.
Unable to contain herself, Elsa threw her arms around her mother, sobbing into her mother's shoulder.
"I have so much to tell you, I'll send word to Anna. She'll be so eager to see you."
FOR A MOMENT, JUST A MILLISECOND, Iduna was too shocked to move. Was this really Elsa, her Elsa, who had just thrown her arms around her? It was a dream she had given up on coming true. Almostly instantly she grasped her child just as tightly, burying her face in blonde locks, cupping the back of Elsa's head, as she once had when she could still be cradled in Iduna's arms.
"Oh, my darling," she murmured, unconcerned about the tears flowing down her own face, rocking them both gently as she once would have done to calm Elsa's tears when she had been little. "You have no idea how much I love you. Both of you. I have missed you so desperately."
@reginaestellae. "I've missed you." (From Elsa)
OH, HOW SHE HAD MISSED HER precious eldest child. The ache in her chest felt now more like a permanent feature than an emotion. As if someone had taken a chisel and carved it there. It's twin sensation, that of missing Anna, her beloved ray of sun, throbbed just as surely. And the grief beneath it all, for leaving them, for losing them. Any idea of time healing the wound had been nothing of the sort. Each moment she was away hurt more than the last.
She wanted to crush her daughter to her chest, to hold her for the rest of their lives and never let go. To wrap her arms around her as she had when Elsa was a little girl. But she remembered well the fearful voice demanding they not touch her, that no one touch her. Iduna had broken that rule once before, the last time she had seen Elsa. She did not regret it. But it had been years. How could she know what her reaction would be now?
"And I you," she replied, hands hovering at her midsection, unable to fully control the urge. "I have missed you more than I can say, Elsa."
@lightbegunĀ Ā :Ā Ā āHi,ā Ā His head tilts up towards her as he speaks, stick fingers fidgeting anxiously in a habit heād picked up from Elsa. Ā He isnāt normally shy, but this is different. Ā This is Elsaās mother, who heād heard so many stories of. Ā Elsaās mother, who had saved a boy and earned the blessing that had let Elsa make him. Ā Olaf would like to make a good impression. Ā āIām Olaf. Ā Iām⦠Elsa made me.ā
HER EYES WIDENED A LITTLE AT the sight before her: what a wondrous thing! A shape Iduna was deeply familiar with, the little snowman her daughters would build as children, stood once more before her. And yet this one was so unlike the others: the inherent life in him, his sweet expression, and she could see a shadow of her eldest in the movement of his twig hands, one that made her crouch to his level and take a hand. Memories of a small form hiding behind her shirts as a small child filled her mind and had the corners of her eyes crinkling.
āOlaf,ā she echoed, still a little shocked, but with a smile spreading across her face. āOf course you are. Itās a pleasure to meet you.ā
How much had her daughterās powers grown? She still remembered well the days of wiping slush from chubby toddler fingers, and yet here was proof of a level of magic she couldnāt even comprehend. Perhaps it may have frightened her once upon a time: fear for her child, the trolls warning never far from her mind. But now? Now there was nothing but joy in learning what Elsa could do. How she had finally embraced her gift.
āHow old are you, Olaf?ā she asked, still gently holding a stick hand in her own.

@sunlightswallowedāĀ Ā :Ā Ā ā men are such babies. ā
IDUNA CHOKED ON THE LAUGHTER THAT flew up her throat, several heads turning to look at her in concern as the new queen coughed. She waved them off, giving them a watery smile as she held in anymore of the outburst.
She had never spent too much time with Agnarrās sister, seeing Arianna as too busy, too far from their younger adventures. But now they were in similar roles, she had discovered a friend, someone who understood entirely what Iduna was going through, having done it herself.Ā
Face a little red, she turned her eyes back to gaze upon their husbands, trapped up on the raised platform at the front of the room. They had been greeting guests for some time, both queens able ā and encouraged ā to go and mingle with the other women. Agnarr occasionally sought her eyes over the heads of the crowd and it was hard not to giggle at his pathetic expression.Ā Frederic occasionally looked just as pained.Ā
āOnce again you are completely correct,ā Iduna murmured behind a fan she used to cool her heated cheeks.Ā
prophiceā:
DOES HER MOTHER NOT SEE WHAT SHE IS? The trolls words echo and pound in her skull. ( YOUR LAND SHALL BE CURSED WITH UNENDING WINTER. A RULER WITH A FROZEN HEART. ) They swirl and spin, caught up in the storm of her very being. ( Control it, control it. ) She curls tighter, hunches over, her whole body shaking with effort.
Effort that, upon Idunaās arms coming around, crumbles and collapses in her own FEAR.
āLET GO OF ME.ā Her voice rings, the loudest itās ever been since the accident. Shrill and high-pitched with panic. Fear strikes, ice blue eyes wild with terror as the wind PICKS UP into a howling gale, swirling around them both, the bitter wind picking and clawing at Idunaās dress, as if trying to pry the woman off. Elsa PUSHES against her mother, twisting in effort to GET AWAY.Ā āPlease. Please, I donāt ā Donāt make me āā A sob builds in her voice, swallowed down, her tiny body trembling.
THE WIND HAD IDUNA SQUEEZING HER eyes shut, ducking her head down to rest her forehead against Elsaās crown. Her instinct was to just hold Elsa closer, her arms tightening against the rising storm.Ā
āElsa, darling, just calm down,ā she said, her voice raised against the howling wind, but still only for her child.Ā āItās just me, itās just Mamma. Iām here. Itās okay.ā
Perhaps another would be scared to see sure uncontrolled power coming from their child. But Iduna had grown up among Earth Giants and Water Spirits, a Fire Salamander and been friends with the Wind itself. Nothing Elsa could do would ever cause her mother to fear her, only fear for her. She was terrified of this whole situation ā Elsaās own fear ā spiralling into something far more harmful.Ā
She was practically bent over her eldest, unnecessarily shielding her from the cold.Ā
āDonāt be afraid, my love.ā
prophiceā:
THE TOUCH MAKES HER FLINCH, a sharp recoil pulling her away from the BURNING ( comforting ) WARMTH of her motherās fingers. Her hand raises, hastily PUSHING IT AWAY. ( As if Elsaās touch will hurt, as if just touching her will cause her mother pain. ) A whimper is SILENCED by the bite of her lip, teeth digging into her skin. The ice cracks, echoes and sings as it crawls up the walls, inching slowly up. Itās loud, eerie, ONIMOUS.
āI canāt.ā She whimpers, curling herself into a small, taut ball. Knees hugged to her chest, face buried in them as a harsh sound escapes her. ( Donāt feel. Donāt feel. Donāt feel. ) Talking makes it WORSE. Feeling makes it WORSE. Itās easier if she just ā DOESNāT.
āI donāt want to hurt you.ā Ice cracks, crawls up the walls further. Elsa flinches, her body shuttering as if COLD, but sheās not. Sheās not cold, sheās not hot. Just NUMB.
IDUNAāS JAW TIGHTENED AS HER BABY moved away from her, curled up only tighter. She had carried Elsa before anyone else, had held her until her arms felt more like a cradle than limbs, had wiped away her tears and made her laugh. This child whom she had helped learn to walk and played with each day. She was suffering and seemed to be under the impression she must do it alone. That the touch of her mother or the reverse could be any cause for concern.Ā
āOh, my love,ā she murmured, enveloping Elsa in her arms, determined to prove something to them both.Ā āIf touching you were somehow dangerous, I would still do it. You are my child, Elsa, and I love you. I despise that youāre hurting, but you donāt have to do this alone. Iām here, and I will always be here.ā
vetrhridarā:
THE WORDS COME OUT BEFORE SHE CAN THINK BETTER. Sharp and bitten off, brought on by STRESS and FEAR and maybe a touch of actual ANGER. Her jaw snaps shut, teeth sinking into her lower lip, eyes DOWNCAST. Tears prick at the corners of her eyes.
( Conceal it. Donāt feel it. )
āDonāt let it show.ā She mutters to herself, gloved hands wringing her skirts. Elsa waits until the BURN in her eyes has vanished before she looks up, shy and apologetic, to her mother.
āIām sorry.ā She starts, so genuine. Her voice is SMALL, her body curling into itself on the bed. ( Her ears ring, wind howling in her chest. ) āIām just āā Sheās worried. Sheās scared. Sheās frustrated.
THE WHISPERED WORDS WERE AUDIBLE, AND Iduna couldnāt help but worry about the phrase their daughter had latched onto. But she said nothing, only turning to look at Elsa when the apology came. There was the little girl she knew so well.Ā
Sitting on the edge of the bed, Iduna reached out a hand to cup Elsaās face. She had always seemed such a small, delicate child. Even Anna, although smaller, made up for her lack of stature with enough energy for three.Ā
āI know,ā she murmured, rubbing a thumb over a pale cheek, an understanding smile on her face.Ā āItās been difficult for all of us, especially you. But I would rather you came to talk to me than let things build until you snap at me, my snow.ā
@vetrhridarā sent:Ā ā donāt talk anymore, okay? itās only going to upset me. ā
FOR A SECOND, IDUNA SAID NOTHING, shocked that her daughter ā her Elsa, normally polite to a fault ā had just spoken to her in such a manner. She had half a mind to give the girl a scolding she would not soon forget. But she smothered that impulse. The stress Elsa was under was immense, obvious. Perhaps it was too forgiving to offer her the benefit of the doubt, but she would, just this one.Ā
āI am going to pretend you did not just speak to me so rudely,ā she said, folding another handkerchief and placing it in the drawer. The maids could have done it, but Iduna had never really adjusted to having someone else do something she could so easily do herself.Ā āAnd you can thank your lucky stars it was me you just said such a thing to, and not your father.ā

A thumb rubbed over the soft skin beneath Annaās eye, a gesture she had performed when her girls were small, wiping away their tears after a fall, the sleep from their eyes when they spent too long in bed.Ā
āMany donāt like to admit they are afraid,ā she said gently, taking one of Annaās hands into her own, intertwining their fingers.Ā āBut fear comes with life. And I happen to think that those who can admit they are afraid but then act anyway are the bravest of us all.ā

š šššš ššššššš šššš š ššš ššš home. The idea immediately brought back painful memories of the grief that still washed through her late at night, that made her curl in on herself with the pain of it. Agnarr assumed it was the pain of losing her family, which was of course part of it. But she had also lost herself that day when the mist came down. Her people, her past, her heritage. All had been hidden. Perhaps one day she would build the courage to tell her husband, her best friend, the truth. Perhaps it was best left unknown.
It took a second to shake the thoughts from her mind and offer the child -- Cassandra -- a small smile. How much help she could offer, Iduna wasnāt sure, but someone ought to be listening to the girl. She was obviously very upset, feeling lost, and no one was keeping a close enough eye on her. In a castle of this size, how hard was it to find someone to watch one little girl?
āI can certainly try,ā she replied, holding out a hand.Ā āWhy donāt we go back to my rooms, and you can tell me what happened, hm?ā

HER LEGS FELT LIKE THEY would give out as she leant more heavily against the tree. As she watched the girlās movements, she felt all the more confident of where she was. The way she held the staff was like a memory wrenched from her mind, her fatherās hands wrapped around his own, showing Iduna the proper way to protect herself. Tears welled in her eyes as she answered the questions, slipping easily back into her mother tongue, even after all the time away.
āI -- our ship was wrecked,ā she replied, finally letting herself fall to the forest floor.Ā āWe were trying to cross the Dark Sea. I think -- I think Iām mostly alright. I canāt tell?ā
The adrenaline was too strong in her veins, having been reignited by the sight of the stranger. Desperation had kept her walking, and now great heaving breaths seemed to be pulling from her as she realised the truth of the situation. It had been her idea, her insistence they go. And now Agnarr was likely gone, lost beneath the waves with the rest of the shipās crew.Ā
āHow far are we from the village?ā she asked between gulps of air.
