23 Favorite Albums for my 23rd Bday: Part 1/3

I turn 23 in less than 2 weeks. I was meant to post this around one year ago at 22. Things don’t always happen the way that they should but, they do happen nonetheless. So onward to part 1 of my 23 favorite songs and albums!

1. I Want You - Marvin Gaye Favorite Song - I Want You

This album was produced by Leon Ware who is underrated The album is notorious for being Marvin Gaye’s move into a more sexual sound. While it marks his career for that reason it marks my life for the same reason as an annoying 21-year-old who was sleeping around. It also holds cultural relevance for me in the realm of nostalgia as I’ve seen the sugar shack painting throughout my grandparents and many on old black person’s house. The album feels like both returning home and being on the horizon of something new. That same feeling carries over into my favorite song on the album, “I Want You”. The song captures a sense of longing, lust, and a pure desire for love while playing on classic jazz and r&B sounds in a way that is both complex and relaxing.

2. Sign O the Times - Prince Favorite Song - If I Was Your Girlfriend

I will admit I like sign of the times the concert film more than the album. The soft focus that gives the film a dreamy aura is instantly relaxing. However, Sign of the Times reigns as one of Prince’s softest and strongest albums in my opinion. This is the same album that gave us the infamously romantic Adore and the pompous and sexual Hot Thing. While these songs stay in heavy rotation for me my favorite song is easily “If I was Your Girlfriend”. This song hold particular significance for me, mainly in that it captures my feelings about not performing femininity “correctly” in relationships, whatever that means. The album’s ability to capture a wide range of emotion although not always positive and definitely not coy makes this album one of my favorites.

3. Street Songs - Rick James Favorite Song - Below the Funk (Pass the J)

Rick James Street Songs IS the Rick James album. You can’t tell me different. This album alone holds multiple classics of James’ career and Funk of the 1980s. The album was actually released on my birthday, 15 years before I was born, which is somewhat irrelevant but definitely something I am still proud of in my own droll way. I know every word on this album and I will sing all of it at too full a volume if you make the mistake of playing it around me.

4. Are You Experienced? - The Jimi Hendrix Experience Favorite Song - 51st Anniversary

There is a big part of me that feels that Are You Experienced? By The Jimi Hendrix Experience has been downgraded in a way. This downgrade comes from the fact that the album art has graced the college and high school dorm walls of many a young adult fuck boy. I should know, I’ve dated one of them. Nonetheless, when I actually listened to this album in full for the first time I realized why Spencer’s stores across America sell a glow in the dark poster of it (or did? Are they out of business? I don’t know). The psychedelia that the album captures is both pervasive and subtle, mostly in that the intensity of the instruments jumps from song to song. One of the most intense and in my personal opinion most interesting which is why it is my favorite is 51st Anniversary. I love a good story song and this one does not disappoint with the opening line of “For 50 years they’ve been married”. I love starting with a strong mental image and especially one that reminds me of my grandparents long standing marriage. I’m not sure why I like being reminded of that marriage because I am almost certain that they hate each other but I digress. In short, what a good song, what a good album!

5. Gal - Gal Costa Favorite Song - The Empty Boat

Gal Costa is that bitch. She is that bitch to me and listeners of Tropicalia and Bossa Nova. She is really important to all 30 of us and has cemented that importance through her 1969 album Gal. The album holds my favorite song from her “The Empty Boat”. This song, which yes is a song in English on a Brazilian album, doesn’t require me to use the Portuguese I so painstakingly learned. I’ll be honest I just like the beat of the song so there’s not real commentary there. If we are going to talk about lyrical content and ability to sing along to the song my favorite would be “Meu Nome è Gal”, which is quite the classic Gal Costa track and more than worth checking out. Eu Amo igual.

6. Aquemini - Outkast Favorite Song - Spottieottiedopalicious

Outkast’s Aquemini has graced many the car dashboards of a n*gga in the A.I didn’t have a car when I lived in Atlanta but if I did I would have bought a CD just because. The album by the iconic Atlanta duo has one of mine and probably everyone else’s favorite songs from this album is Spottieottiedopalicious. This song stands the test of time through its creative word play, cultural references, and hypnotizing beat, especially the horn melody that cruises throughout the song. That horn section in particular will forever be burned into my memory and by burned into I mean I consistently hear it in both my dreams and nightmares. So if Jordan Peele is reading this for whatever reason, please make that horn section scary. Anyway, my other favorite song from this album is Da Art of Storytellin Part 1, also known as the part no one really pays attention to but, that’s okay because it slaps regardless. The song tells of a dichotomy between two experiences with women in the rappers and paints a picture that I enjoy hearing semi-regularly.

7. Return of Saturn - No Doubt Favorite Song - Marry Me

As a child in California in the early 2000s I’ve heard way too much Ska music. No amount of ska music will hold the same significance as No Doubt does for me, mostly because I had an aunt who thought she was white whenever she listened to Gwen Stefani, but that’s neither here nor there. What is here though is the Return of Saturn and my favorite song, “Marry Me”. The song captured in one word for me is Lust. It a song about marriage but the sensual beat that it rides speaks to me in a strange way. It speaks to me in so strange a way that I’ll recommend it to a bunch of strangers on the internet and play it in a situation that will cause mood whiplash in a room full of people. Gwen and them snapped. Listen to this album because it has more than one hit.

8. Masterjam - Rufus Favorite Song - Do You Love What You Feel?

Masterjam by Rufus is the album that you put on at the party and all your 50-year-old and older Auntie’s start screaming; all your 50-year-old aunties and me. I’m probably screaming because the Dj decided to play my favorite song from the album, the classic, “Do You Love What You Feel”. I have no idea what to call that random noise that plays throughout the song but, I love that noise. The song captures a delicate but, very danceable grove in between that noise and I don’t care where I am, I will dance to it.
