So I made the dragon eye... its semi- functional (middle part twists, lenses are interchangeable and buttons can be pressed on back) and although it's not perfect, I am absolutely in love with this project 😍 in total it took me about 3 or 4 days to complete, and it was super fun all the way 🤭
If anyone is interested, I can release a tutorial or instructions on how to make! I would love to help out any other crafty people out there 😛
What kind of materials did you use? Fabric, clay?
I used clay! The tutorial is up if you're looking for more in depth details

Does it project a map?
I drew some semblance of a map onto the lens and it projects that! I think with a fine tip sharpie it would look better lol
Dragon eye written tutorial below!
*if you can't get gold paint, use gold paper
Materials:
Loose leaf paper
Cardboard
Plastic (think takeout container lids)
Matte paint (brown, white, black, green, and optionally gold*)
Air dry clay
2 red beads
Scissors
Scotch tape and masking tape
Hot glue
Pencil, dry erase marker, sharpie (any color)
Sculpting tool/toothpick
Plastic straw
Matte sealant (optional)
IMPORTANT! PLEASE GATHER MANY REFERENCES! They can be found on pinterest and the httyd wiki!
To begin, take your loose leaf paper and roll it up into a tube, hotdog style. Then, with your pencil, marl out where everything will go. I used these proportions to help make things accurate:
The two front parts are the same, and the back is half of one of those parts, if that makes sense.
Next, roll up a piece of cardboard (refer to the video if you're unsure how to do that) and stuff it into the dragon eye. Avoid cardboard in these spots:
Keep the front piece of cardboard near the mouth and the piece in the middle. We will need those later on.
Once you're done, roll up another piece of cardboard that is the same size as the brown areas in the middle of the dragon eye. Make sure there is no overlap, although it is allowed to be a little loose, enough to allow it to spin. When you've properly measured that, glue it together using hot glue and then cut it into 9 roughly equal strips.
Next, paint the paper where the spinning cardboard will go dark brown. It should be the same color you're planning on painting the outer spinning mechanism as. Make sure you're using matte paint, as glossy paint will be tacky and make it difficult to use.
Next, we're making the cardboard skeleton. Cut out pieces according to this guide: (green= cardboard, orange = paper)
Slide on the spinning mechanisms and hot glue everything in place. Make sure to keep the circle you cut out, that will be the base for the snow wraith tooth later on.
Next, roll out your air dry clay using your pencil, marker, or a rolling pin designed for clay. Then, drape it over the top of the mouth, reaching all the way down the cardboard. You don't need to put any clay in the paper area in-between the two jaws.
While the clay is still moldable, get your plastic straw and bend it so it is an oval shape. Press that pattern all over the clay. Once the clay is dry, repeat this same process on the bottom.
Part 2 will be out soon, since my tumblr is beginning to lag and I don't want the post to be too long
Part 2!
IM VERY SORRY! I FORGOT TO MENTION TWO NEEDED MATERIALS:
A small paintbrush and a sponge brush/ kitchen sponge
While that clay is drying, sculpt the teeth out of clay. Use the references you collected to make it as accurate as possible :)
Glue in the red beads on each side for the eyes.
Once every piece of clay is fully dry, hot glue the teeth onto the jaw. Using your hot glue, layer lots of it to create 3d gums. Do this all around.
Once the hot glue is dry, roll your clay out and spread it around this section:
Using your toothpick, poke texture all around the clay. You can let it dry by propping it up. Use your refs for any details!
Finally, repeat that same process in this area, except not adding texture this time. Make sure to still add the swirls and such.
Do not put clay into the area where the snow wraith tooth goes!
Cut out a plastic disk that can fit into the back area of the dragon eye. Next, cut out 7 flay trapezoids out of clay, making sure they can sit side by side, forming a circle with nothing in the middle. Fold a piece of cardboard accordian style, then cut it up into 7 pieces that can be glued onto the trapezoids. These will act as buttons. (Refer to the video if you're confused) Then, cut out a smaller plastic disk that can fit in the center. Wrap the smaller disk in paper. Finally, glue verything onto the larger disk, then glue the larger disk into the back of the dragon eye. There, you have created the button mechanism in the back!
Using the cardboard you saved from the front, glue a plastic disk that fits in the cardboard. It should fit into that area, creating the lens. Using clay, create this design:
Now, you should have all the pieces in aside from the snow wraith tooth and the lens.
To create the lens, use the same process as the front , making sure it fits into the compartment behind the head. Use clay for the pattern as well.
For the snow wraith tooth, take the cardboard disk and glue a small cardboard rectangle on it. That will be the base for the tooth. After that, sculpt the tooth using references. Glue it if it is unsteady. I glued mine in, but if you want an interactive element, you can keep it out and add the ability to twist it into place.
Now that you have everything, it's time to paint. Mix brown, white, and green paint together until you create a tan-colored mixture. Paint that on the head, the place behind the lens compartment and the back.
Next, take your sponge and put paint on it, one side brown, the other side green. Dab that a few times on your paint pallette to make sure it's not too strong, then being pressing that onto the tan parts to add a worn, aged look.
Paint the twisting parts the same dark brown from the beginning and let that dry fully. Finally, take your gold paint and paint on the details. I used gold paper, so I traced my designs on there, cut them up, and used hot glue to place them on there. Paint the dragon eye lens, buttons in the center, and front lens brown as well. For a finishing touch, add tan paint onto the buttons to create the illusion of the designs that are on there.
Finally, using your masking tape, cover up any part you want to keep shiny, then use your matte spray. Let that dry and you're done!
If you have any questions, please comment them. 😛😼😼

Here is the video tutorial! Please ignore my voice, I was trying to be quiet since we had guests 😅😅

RTTE THEORY
The dragon eye is obviously worn and dirty, pictured literally covered in moss, but the eyes are red and in the concept art they mention how most of the lighter parts are ivory. Could the dragon be a snow wraith???
That also aligns with the key being a snow wraith tooth, and although it's a mystery as to who made the dragon eye, could we maybe pinpoint it to the colder areas of the archipelago? Or maybe Oswald?
Maybe in another life we'll have canon dead of winter outfits instead of the normal outfits... 💔
You can't convince me they aren't always cold 👿
This one of my fav pics of snotlout
THIS IS FRYING ME SOMEONE HAD TO ANIMATE THIS
Ruffnut omg omg omg my fav
My fav drawings from the past couple of days, I re-watched dawn of the dragon racers and I guess they didn't fully officiate the model for hiccup since the shirt is green instead of the red it is in rtte. Pretty cool, though, and I tried drawing astrid to no avail. (Her face paint evades me)
For tuffnut, I just used this pose reference from pinterest and replaced the axe with a Macy lalalalalaa ok bye
Hiccup haddock said lock in. It's canon
Ta daa!!! I finished them! It got more difficult for every new one I made, order goung Toothless, Stormfly, Hookfang, Meatlug, and obviously Barf and Belch. Overall such a wonderful project and a great thing to put on my bookshelf!
Thank you @cyperpsychedelic for the idea for the eyes 🥳 I would've never thought to add highlights but it turned out so beautifully
Stormfly and hookfang!! My plan is to add the pupils at the very end, kind of as a finishing touch. Ignore the paint on my fingers, I'm currently working on painting meatlug. 😅
As a side note, I had a dream last night I discovered a bunch of lizard lps at random in my room which were perfect for barf and belch. I woke up very disappointed
Okay I will be adding pupils to the lps!!! Not sure if I mentioned this but I may or may not be making the main 5... I've finished stormfly already and am currently working on hookfang!! I should be done with him by tonight, meaning I'll be over halfway done with this little project. Yay!! 🥳🥳
I'm obsessed with the little detail in the live action httyd when Hiccup is sitting at his desk using the model of Toothless he made. It's such a minor thing but it honestly seems like something he would do. I'm thinking of making it if I can get a screen grab, although Google is showing no results unfortunately. If I find it I'll share it just in case anyone else wants to make it as well 🥳
