fake maikos may 2014 golden pavilion, kyoto, japan
Hi sweety, these aren't fake Maiko, they're girls wearing Kimono. It's a popular activity especially around areas like Kyoto, both tourists and locals alike enjoy participating in wearing Kimono and looking at all the sights of the area.
Was in kyoto, they wont stop, they will keep on walking even if you will take photos of them. They say geisha and maiko arent the same, they explained it to me but as of the moment im confused, so i hashtag both.
These are all Maiko ^^ Unfortunately they went by too quickly for me to identify and when I froze the image, it was too blurry D; But basically the person was correct, Geiko (Kyoto Geisha) And Maiko are not the same. A Maiko is a girl training to be a Geiko ^^ They have a more complex and childish regalia while the regalia of a Geiko is much more subtle and mature ^^

Maiko Ichimari during Baikasai in 2013. She wore this hikizuri this year too, she just looks stunning in it! Baikasia to my understanding is an event held in Kamishichiken to celebrate the plum blossoms. During this event, a huge tea ceremony is held where Maiko and Geiko serve dozens of people the Macha tea and sweets that are traditionally served during Tea Ceremonies.

Maiko Yukiha during her misedashi, debuted on the 20th of February. She looks quite happy and beautiful in her Misedashi regalia~ I love the obi she wore. Each of those kanzashi (Hair ornaments) besides the silvery ones, are made of tortoise shell. Many are okiya heirlooms passed from generation to generation.

Maiko Yukiha-san. This is her during her Misedashi, her debut as Maiko. She debuted on February 20th 2014 and looks lovely~ She has been said to be very kind, even stopping to pose for photographers when she was a Minarai. Good luck to her!

Pocchiri are the decorative “broaches” (Sorry, a Broach is the closest Western thing I could think to compare it too) That maiko wear held up with the obijime in front of their obi ^^ All the jewels are real, many feature pearls, diamonds, jade, amber, all sorts of precious stones~ Though they are the smallest thing a Maiko will wear, they are easily the most expensive, even more expensive than the entire obi and hikizuri itself ^^ Because of this, they are passed from generation to generation. Any jeweler would be happy to own such an item ^^ This Pocchiri was worn by Geiko Ayano-san when she was still a Maiko. I'll have to find a picture of her wearing it and post it, as it's quite beautiful~ When a Maiko becomes Geiko, she begins wearing her obijime without the Pocchiri. The times you would see a Maiko without a Pocchiri is while she's wearing a formal ensemble (Black Kimono and Gold Obi) So during Shigiyoshiki and her Sakkou stage. I think Hanamachi like Miyagawacho and Kamishichiken have different colors for Sakkou, I think they're allowed to wear different colors, one color I've seen is purple, but the gold obi with the Pocchiri missing was still part of their regalia.

Introducing Gion Kobu's newest Geiko! Geiko Momokazu-san has finally had her erikae! This is during the second day where she walks around wearing her new Katsura (wig) to thank everyone who has gotten her this far! I wish her all the luck in the world and am sure she will do a fabulous job!

MAIKO MOMOKAZU-SAN HAS JUST STARTED WEARING SAKKOU!!
This means that she will soon debut as Geiko and I for one absolutely can't wait!! She's been a favorite of mine for quite a few months now and I've been keeping my eye out for pictures of her wearing the Sakkou regalia that is used in Gion Kobu. Right now, there's only one picture of her wearing it, and it's quite small, so, I'll be keeping an eye out for better pictures to share with you. For now, this is Momokazu-san as a first year Maiko. She's been performing at Gion Corner since she made her debut as Maiko so there have been plenty of pictures of her through all the stages of her training. I can't wait till she has her erikae!

Geiko Kimika-san on the Left, and Geiko Kimiharu-san on the right ^^ Both of these ladies were real life sisters when they joined the profession, I think Geiko Kimika-san was a bit younger than Geiko Kimiharu-san. Even though their professional names are quite similar, they were actually both accepted by different okiya. Geiko Kimiharu-san has quit as of a couple years ago, I think (Not 100% sure) but Geiko Kimika-san is still practicing and has become very popular in Miyagawacho. She's one of my favorites.

Maiko Tomitae-san and maiko Tomitsuyu-san of Gion Higashi^^ They’re both so cute ^^ This was during a special event outside of Japan, I think, though I'm not exactly sure where. They spent 3 days together working the event, people commented that they were both very lovely and polite which is no surprise. As I mentioned in another post, Maiko Tomitsuyu-san speaks fluent English along with Japanese.

Maiko Katsuhina of Gion Kobu~ She’s really very lovely and I love the very interesting Kanzashi that she is wearing. She’s fairly young but she already looks very confident in her profession. The Shidare (Dangling bits of folded silk by her face) are meant to mimic falling maple leaves which I think is just beautiful.

Mamehana-san as Maiko preforming the dance “Kurokami” which translates to “Black Hair”. This dance is very special as it’s normally reserved for women (Geiko) and not Girls (Maiko) But during the sakkou stage, Maiko often preform it as a sign that they are transforming from young girls to women. It’s more or less like a right of passage for Kyoto Maiko. Mamehana was very popular as a Maiko and then later on as a Geiko, sadly because of health reasons, she retired in 2012 I believe, right before I started studying the culture.

Geiko Kofuku-san during her Erikae. Erikae translates to something like "turning of the collar" it's when a girl becomes a Geiko. While most Geiko go through their maiko training stage, some do enter the profession straight as a Geiko. Geiko Kofuku-san to my understanding did have a Maiko stage. I just love how graceful she looks~

Maiko Eriha-san as a first year maiko. She’s so cute~ I used to confuse her as maiko koyoshi-san before maiko koyoshi-san became a geiko. I think maiko Eriha-san is now in her second year of training ^^

Maiko Tomitae-san who is from the same okiya as maiko Tomitsuyy-san. While tea ceremony may not seem like a big deal to westerners, to Japanese people it’s a highly specific event that has to be done with very specific traditions. When geiko are performing the tea ceremony, a maiko will be there to assist them. During the tea ceremony, green macha powder is used and is whisked into the rich green tea and traditional sweet desserts are provided to the guests to accompany their tea. While usually Geiko make the tea, sometimes a highly skilled Maiko will perform the tea ceremony instead.
