“Class please settle down.”Ms. Choi, your seonsaengnim, spoke as she now stood at the front of the classroom. You were only to refer to her as seonsaengnim since it was very disrespectful to call her by her last name. Everyone stopped their side conversations and gave her all their attention.
“Thank you, today I will be briefly discussing our ‘project’. I understand this is the second week of school for you all, but I really wanted to get this assignment started early. As I have mentioned before this project will span over the school year, including checkpoints due every month or so. The grades are added up at the end of each quarter, and are worth 10 percent of your final quarter grade. Therefore, failure to complete majority of the assignments will cause your grade to drop 1 to 2 letter grades.” A chorus of gasps and a wavering of confused faces spread amongst your fellow classmates, even you were a little baffled by the news.
“Ugh, I’m so gonna fail this class.”
“I wonder what the assignment is.”
“I guess I can’t copy off Rose anymore”Your best friend turned towards you and flicked you right in the middle of you forehead.
“Be quiet and pay attention, this is important.” Rose whispered to you before facing towards the front once again. Rose was Korean like her mother and father, but unlike them she knew very little about her culture. After her parents attended a university in the U.S, they decided to stay here and assimilate to the ‘american culture’, only celebrating a few korean holidays here and there. She had actually been the reason you joined this class in the first place; She was thoroughly interested to find out more about her culture and you justed wanted to have as many classes as you could with your best friend. It was pretty easy to switch into this class considering not a lot of people opted to take Korean, most students took Spanish, French, and even Japanese.
“Our school is in association with the language department of Seoul International High School in Seoul, South Korea. You will each be assigned a student from one of their English class to be your ‘partner’. I will come around with envelopes that your partners prepared for you. Inside will be some basic information about them along with anything else they were allowed to include.” Your teacher began to walk over to your section of the classroom with a wicker basket full of envelopes. “Y/N Y/L/N, here you go.” You thanked her before tearing open the envelope she placed your desk, spreading the contents out. There was a photo along with a notecard, a ribbon of some sort and a piece of candy.
“Geez, your partner sent you a lot, we didn’t get half as much as you did Y/N.” A classmate sitting near you spoke as they leaned over and observed all the items on your desk. Glancing over at everyone else’s desks you noticed most of them had just received a note card, maybe even a photo.
“Your penpal doesn’t even know who you are and they like you already.”Rose joked as she picked up the notecard. “His name is Lee Donghyuck. He’s 17 and likes food, having fun, and messing with his best friend Mark. He extremely dislikes homework and tutoring.” You could relate to Donghyuck on a spiritual level, neither of the activities were fun whatsoever. “I don’t really know him, but I feel like you two are going to get along pretty well.” Rose commented, placing the notecard back on your desk and swapped it out for the picture. “Lucky you, he’s kinda cute too.” She turned the picture towards you. You hadn’t really looked at it until now, but she was right. He was kinda cute.
