like you clock the red flag in real time, you name your inner child’s need, you breathe through the trigger—and then still spiral bc someone took too long to text back or you accidentally caught feelings for a walking trauma response

self-awareness doesn’t save you from feelings. it just lets you watch them unfold like, “ah yes. here comes the emotional devastation. completely understood. totally irrational. unstoppable.”

you can be wise and still messy. evolved and still yearning. a tragic little sea slug of consciousness, floating toward the light and bumping into rocks anyway.

“ He is dying, Layla, ” Stilgar sat cross-legged from her, while she was sprawled in her hammock, one leg thrown over the side to keep a slow and steady pace of rocking, soothing the young child that laid flat against her torso, his fingers knotting into the curls of her hair. Stilgar, as dear to Layla as though he were her own blood, as he had been to her father before her, she knew him to speak from a place of both compassion and pragmatism - but Layla would not hear it, she couldn’t. They have all lost, and in no small measure, but specifically what Layla had lost, while still the same tried and true story of tragedy among her people, it was so recent that she still had her son’s tshka to give the child laying in her arms now. She answered him in silence. He wasn’t deterred. “ Keep faith with him, pray for him, but you cannot lose yourself to a child that could have never hoped to survive our world,” his head nodded in the due-north direction of Arrakeen, “ or theirs - his ailing body is not your part; you are giving him peace that no Romulan or Harkonnen ever would, but you cannot hope – “ “ Enough! Please, Stilgar – enough. ” He wasn’t wrong, she thought of it too. She thought of it constantly. Layla simply couldn’t avoid daring to hope; as a mother, she wasn’t even certain she knew how. He was so unusually pale, like milk. Like Harkonnens. Save for his eyes. His eyes were a bright, crystal sort of blue, not a pitch black shade she’d seen amongst those who served the machinations of Romulans and Harkonnens. Though not like the Eyes of Ibad; it was blue like she’d seen on certain offworlders in spaceports in the South. Layla estimated that he could have been no more than four years of age on account of how small he had been and the child’s mild, but unique, struggle to understand how to properly consume solid food; compensating, Layla often hand fed the boy. He stirred in her arms. Layla and Stilgar became apoplectic where they sat – gripped with a presiding anxiety that he would wake crying from a horror screaming havoc in his dreams. The child struggled so hard to cling to the mortal coil, they worried deeply the tears he shed from the fear his dreams could be the very difference between his own little life and a swift death: Fremen believing the shedding of a single tear, in the deepest desert, could be the razor’s edge between life and death. But he settled. As did they.

“ Tss-tss-tss, ” Layla hissed her scolding at her son’s irritated flinches while she dabbed along his orbital, now slowly leaking a thread-thin line of blood accompanied by an indigo bruise starting to bloom on his sunkissed cheekbone. “ Is the fight really worth it if you lose your body’s water, Mathra? ” Running a cloth on his face that had on it a mixture of spice, ground roots, and castor oil to form a paste for both the clotting and healing of small scrapes and fleshwounds. Slight in his stature, though still growing as she often reminded him, Layla did still, all these years later, quietly fret over his health. Consciously she tried not to let it out, shame him or slight his pride - he was as quick and capable, clever and deeply loved within their tribe. None who loved him so much as his Mother; Layla. Still, he was fourteen, it was important for him to find his own way – cementing who he wants to be along that chosen path. This was a personal practice Layla felt important for anyone, and she admired her boy his ambition even when that ambition sometimes carried his feet a bit faster than his body was going, even if he were to fall, he’d be back up and adapting to survive. That’s his gift. Layla might even believe it could be a part of his larger purpose. Pushing back a thick flank of his unruly curls to swipe at a stray streak of blood and dirt, she smiled against Pavel’s sour face and small noises of protest, “ – is this anything to do with where you’ve been going out into the desert at night? “ Her voice adopted that gentle way that she only ever used when she spoke to her son, smoothing his hair down with a soft stroke of her hand. For three nights she wondered where he vanished. She wondered if there was someone out in the desert he’d gone to sandwalk in the night with, but his thoughts were too burdened and heavy in the morning for it to be the call of a young lover. Tilting her head to look at the side of his face, not drawing his eyeline to hers, letting him keep his secrets if he so chose. “ Or is this such a thing that a son cannot say to his mother? “ A jest, a jibe, something to break the tension in the aura around him. Layla tapped her forehead against the top of his head, “ – whatever weight you are carrying, Eidat’Zab, let me help you carry it. ”
