I had a horrible first impression of this album. Released for streaming on NPR prior to release, the audio quality of the songs was horrible: the mix had no depth, and the songs had no life. The lifeless pop for the sake of pop left a fetid taste in my mouth, by someone who I'd considered a contender for my favorite current artist.
But, as fate would have it, my roommate and good friend Cody insisted that I give the album another chance. "It was the mix" he told me, "the stream's nowhere near the quality of the cd." So I gave it another shot.
What I heard put any doubts to rest; Mikal Cronin is one of the good guys. Though he proved he could make a crowd pogo with the songs off previous releases (i.e. Reverse Shark Attack and Moonhearts, to name two),MCII shows a new side of Cronin: writing honest, catchy pop songs with intelligent chord progressions and well-placed harmonies. Informed by the hooks and fuzz of both past and present pop, he insists on being sincerely poignant in a scene known for its gimmicks and tongue-in-cheek irony. With his latest offering bearing witness, Cronin's best songs may be ahead of him.
You can turn your brain off to this one. The vocals appear bored at first listen, but when put in context of the song, one realizes they are moreso effortless, as if dreaming. Seapony

It's being out on the light-hearted electronic dancefloor, getting stuck in between fuzzy walls of distorted, reverberating guitar noise, and laying out on the beach checking out the surf. All. At. Once.
