I am almost scared to ask, but it has consumed my feed so I must know; what is a bacteriophage?

Okay, deep breaths and stay calm self. Bacteriophages are a virus that only infect bacteria (and some species of archea but that is beside the point). They look like this:

The orange one is an artist's rendition, and the black and white on is an actual picture taken using a transmission electron microscope.

Theyre my main special interest and my url namesake and my profile picture and i love them so incredibly much for so many reasons but I do not want to overwhelm you with facts.

(other than that they're the most abundant organism in earth - there are ONE TRILLION!!!!!!!!!! PER GRAIN OF SAND ON EARTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO MANNNYYYYYY)

Also the types of bacteria on my hand is closer to the profile of bacteria on your hand than it is my to my gut. (thats not a phage phact though, just bacteria)

I love them so much and I think theyre so awesome and theyre hopefully what I will eventually study in a phd but im quite a way away from that as yet.

EEEEK!!!! Okay so I only have limited time rn so here's just one:

Phages have two life cycles - a lytic and a lysogenic. The lytic cycle is the normal one you think of when you think of viruses - it injects its genetic material into the bacterium, hijacks the cell's organelles, replicates, and causes the cell to burst open, therefore killing the cell and the viruses go on to infect other bacteria.

BUT! There is another cycle - the lysogenic! So in this cycle, phages inject their genetic material into the cell in the same way as in the lytic cycle, but instead of the genetic material being used to make new phages, it integrates itself into the host cell's genetic material. And so the bacterium has all of its own generic material for building the cell, but then also has a sneaky bit of phage genes hanging out in there too (when it exists in the genetic material like this i think its called a prophage). When the bacterium replicates to reproduce, the prophage is replicated too, and so then all of the daughter cells from that cell and their daughter cells too and so on all have this prophage in their genome. THEN!!! Sometimes the prophages will be 'induced', meaning their genetic material separates from the bacterium's, and the phage then enters the lytic cycle again, replicating inside the cell and so on!!

ITS SO COOL AAAGGHHHGH!!!!!!!!!!

sometimes I think about when my roommate was trying to explain what I do to one of his friends and they had an entire conversation only to realize afterwards that he had been talking about lichens and she had been talking about lycans (as in werewolves)

Lichens: Symbiotic organisms made from a combination of fungi, algae, and maybe some funky bacteria. All or most of the parts can also exist on their own. A mystery and misunderstood in most media.

How do we know lycans aren’t exactly like lichens?! A symbiotic organism made from a human and other stuff that can exist on their own but when they interact you get a whole ass other life form! Also a mystery and misunderstood in most media!

No one can convince me that werewolves aren’t formed by drinking water contaminated with a toxic algal bloom (which blooms most often under a full moon).

Algae can form resting structures that lay dormant for hundreds of years, maybe the specific wavelength of moonlight inuces the photosynthetic algae to “wake up” inside the human cells and triggers the change to werewolf form.

Now the whole rage-filled people-eating thing can also be explained by algae.

Many species of algae can switch between photosynthetic and heterotrophic (predator) forms if the light is limited. So the moonlight induces the change but it’s not enough to feed the lifeform so it must also consume flesh!

Once the moonlight is gone, it once again goes into its resting cyst form.

But why are they hairy and wolf like?

These are all algae…. Some even look like they have tails.
