random thoughts about tenna and ralsei and darkners' purpose

okay so on twitter there's a lot of people saying if you keep tenna in castle town you're evil (light hearted) bc all he wants to do is be useful/watched, so the 'right' or 'better' choice is to give him to mettaton.

as someone who gave tenna to MTT, i'm not so sure it's the "better" option.

it's especially complicated because darkners technically have a single purpose -- to be whatever their light world counterpart is, to "serve lightners" in ralsei's words. but we've seen what that mindset gets you (ralsei and tenna). on the other side of that, we see how spamton's yearning for agency and autonomy led him to make a deal with his benefactor and how he ended up getting fucked over and losing everything bc of it.

i say this because it seems like there's no winning for darkners atp. you want to be useful to lightners? too bad. everything has an expiration date, and one day won't be useful anymore. you want to see heaven and be free of your predestined purpose? okay well now you're a puppet boy and everybody you know and love hates your guts.

like... there's no winning?

anyway, tying this back to my original point:

when talking to ralsei in chapter 5(?) when he starts crying and insists that he just needs to keep smiling, etc. my immediate response was to tell him that he should embrace his feelings, that it's okay to feel them, etc. that he doesn't just need to be useful, that we care about him no matter what. and at that moment i realized i had maybe sort of fucked up by giving tenna to MTT.

i don't doubt that MTT and co will love and cherish him, but giving tenna to him reinforces tennas belief that he is only valuable when he is useful to others. which... i don't want him to feel that way!

and now i'm wondering how (or if) deltarune could end with everyone happy/satisfied vis a vis the undertale pacifist ending.

like i'm having a hard time imagining one where things don't suck ass for ralsei. for example, let's say the roaring is stopped and whatnot, that there's no world ending and everything's sunshine and flowers and everyone's still friends. like ralsei would still be in the dark world. his friends would come visit him, sure, but he'd spend like 70% of his time without them. not able to be with them and hang out or do any of the things he might want to with kris and susie. like that's sad! he doesn't have a family! or other friends?!!?

When did you start to believe Luffy?

lots of characters in one piece distrust Luffy at first because they're convinced no one could behave the way he does without some kind of ulterior motive. normally, later on, there's a specific moment where these characters will realize "damn ig he genuinely is just that kind and trusting and ambitious, etc."

i had a similar experience when i started one piece and started wondering if anyone else had as well. so, if you did:

thinking more abt how denji always chooses the secret third option when presented with a choice between two things.

i feel as though i didn't realize up until now that those decisions were kind of selfish in a way. in my mind, before now, choosing the third option made sense, especially when denji is put in so many unfair situations. from what i've consumed, normally "choosing the third option" ends up being the unexpected solution that works/solves the protagonists problems, but not in chainsaw man.

"whichever side takes care of me" boy neither side wants to take care of you 😭😭😭

"we'll make our own world" denji then proceeded to create hell on earth.

i'm not 100% sure what fujimoto wants us to take away from this particular aspect of csm, and maybe i'm getting ahead of myself, but here's a few interpretations on my mind: that choices made by ignorance or arrogance never work out well. or maybe it's that life is unfair sometimes and you gotta deal with it anyway. that you gotta be realistic to a degree when opposed by adversity.

hmmmm. adding onto that, i think denji and yoru parallel each other in a lot of ways with the whole "superhero" schtick. specifically after denji starts to identify himself as such. in the sense that both lose sense of reality when they are fighting. denji thinks he can turn into chainsaw man and somehow solve everything through fighting, even though that's what gets nayuta killed and it's what leads to the horrible situation after death is eaten. yoru thinks with enough power/strength that she can beat chainsaw man and somehow that will make her satisfied/happy. she's willing to sacrifice her "children" to gain an advantage, happy to destroy everything asa holds dear, no restraint or forethought. gah. idk just thoughts
