Sooo, I’m still considering rewriting parts of the opening/first chapters. I’ve been torn between wondering if the beginning does not generate enough interest to draw in readers and worrying about not having gotten deep enough into the story yet… These are at odds with each other, of course lol. I cannot fathom why my muse tells me, a first time fanfic writer, that I must throw myself into the deep end of a slow-build, novel-length, epic instead of getting my feet wet with some nice and tidy one shots, but I am at least enjoying myself.
That said, I would appreciate some opinions if anyone has them to give! If I’m doing something good that you want more of or if I have some really annoying writing habit, I’d love to hear about it. :) I’m still so inexperienced with writing prose, getting a reader’s view would be priceless help.
Oh and I’m still taking asks directed at characters, too. They help me get my think on. :> No pressure to come up with something, though! I just wanted to open up a line to see if there are already some thoughts floating out there. ~( ̄▽ ̄)~
Reblogging boring posts at a slightly more decent time... But its because I always post stuff at nobody’s-on-o’clock, so that’s my own fault, lol.

Amelia - Chapter 7. Part 2
★
Oh man… she is in way over her head here.
Amelia had only JUST walked through the gates of Achena moments ago and she’s already overwhelmed.
Lovino had advised her against stopping and looking at the map he’d given her if at all possible. She’s supposed to hurry and find “the market” as soon as possible and not wander or stop long enough for anyone to pay her any attention, but… there is just too much here! How is she supposed to tell one building or street from another? How is she supposed to concentrate through the hum and bustle of cats walking around everywhere??
Amelia looks ahead at the wide main road filled with cats and lined with so many wooden buildings, they stretch farther than she can see! And she knows that there are tons of branching streets and alleyways too, each with their own lines of wooden buildings.
In the distance, looking over the roofs of buildings on her right, she can see a group of buildings towering over the whole town. They’re the tallest structures she’s ever seen before. Even the leaning one that looks to be supported by a giant tree is taller than the Sanctuary!
Not only are they huge, though. They’re obviously two-canes ruins. The familiar, smooth rock walls, perfectly square windows and sharp edges, though crumbled in many places and exposing their mysterious metal skeletons, are unmistakable. Much like the Sanctuary, wooden frames, scaffoldings, and even verandas are built over the ruins by cats in order to make the structures more habitable.
Amelia remembers Lovino pointing out that area on the map, but she just can’t catch her bearings like this. She’s glad Lovino’s cloak is hiding most of her face because she’s having a hard time keeping her uneasy expression off of it. On the other hand, it impedes her vision quite a lot more than normal and she bumps into two or three cats as she walks. Perhaps because they’re all taller than her by varying degrees, they don't see her in their path. Again, Lovino told her not to speak under any circumstances or it would be all over, but while she was figuring out a way to excuse herself without speaking, it seems like the cats had already moved on.
Amelia guesses that cats must bump into each other all the time here… So weird. How can they stand it?
Come to think of it, if she’s not allowed to speak, how on earth is she going to find Mattie in all of this mess? Lovino told her to find Gil and Ludwig’s shop first. A logical idea, now Amelia sees how vast and crowded Achena really is, but if she can’t ask anyone how to find it… Amelia wishes she’d remembered the map better, but honestly the tangle of lines and squares didn’t make any sense to her. She thought she’d get by just on her instincts and tracking capabilities… Now she knows, there’s no way that’s happening.
“Hey kid, you dropped something!” Says a voice behind her. Amelia staggers for just a moment as she almost turns around to face the cat who’d called out. In this crowd, she can’t be sure that it was her he was referring to, and even if she had dropped something, it wasn’t likely anything worth engaging a stranger for. So she walks on, pretending she didn’t hear.
“Oh, don’t be like that, brother. I’m not gonna hurt you.” The voice continues and Amelia can tell that it’s owner is falling into step behind her. Dammit… “Look, I have it for you right here.”
Amelia quickens her pace, but finds that doing so makes it harder to dodge the many passing cats. She can feel that the presence behind her doesn’t seem to be in any hurry to catch up with her, but it continues to follow steadily. He’s stopped calling out. She really doesn’t know what it means. The cat isn’t exuding any kind of fighting will but something, likely the paranoia that had been instilled in her by the Sanctuary cats, has her on the run from him.
While she’s distracted she bumps into the arm of someone hard enough to knock her square into the chest of another. Or abdomen, more like… Amelia is so shocked at how tall and broad the cat standing before her is, her mouth falls open when her eyes finally trail high enough to find his face. The big guy’s own violet eyes widen in shock, mirroring her sentiment, at the sight of her much shorter self. They stand frozen like that for what feels like a very long moment. A long and horrifying moment, when Amelia realizes her hood’s fallen back and those violet eyes are scanning her face, ears, eyes, neck…
“Sorry about that!” That voice from behind Amelia calls out once again. “Hahaha! My friend here never watches where he’s going.”
A chill raises the fur on the back of Amelia’s neck at the sound of that voice this time. She can feel now that there’s something wrong about him, and it’s not only because of the lie he’d just spun to “cover” for Amelia’s clumsiness.
Perhaps the chill had shown on her face as well, because Amelia can see the big guy’s expression change in an instant to one of understanding and then to one of recognition. He opens his arms wide and smiles at Amelia joyfully.
“Alyosha! It has been too long! Imagine, meeting like this!” He has a surprisingly delicate laugh, but gives a hearty pat to both of Amelia’s shoulders, then smoothly fixes her hood so that it covers her face again. “Tell me, how was your journey? Oh, but my manners. This tom here is your friend?”
Big guy gestures to the figure behind her and Amelia takes the opportunity to shake her head without looking back at him.
“Oh, dear! Well, an honest mistake I am sure.” Big guy says looking up, and she’s too close and he’s too tall to see whatever exchange is had between the two toms, but all she can hear behind her now is deathly silence. Big guy turns and places a large hand at her upper back to guide her forward into a dark and narrow alley, squished between two tall and long, wooden buildings. “Come, Alyosha, we have so much to catch up on.”
Ok… this… doesn’t feel any safer. But Amelia’s brain isn’t working fast enough in this unfamiliar situation to find an alternative escape route from either of these strange toms. Big guy continues to urge her further into the alleyway until the bustle of the main street is muffled and she can tell that they’d be difficult to see in this shade if anyone were looking in from outside.
Suddenly, moving unexpectedly fast for such a large framed cat, Amelia finds herself being lifted and thrown over a massive shoulder, and hauled up the side of one of the alley walls.
★TBC★ A/N: I’m posting these up so quickly after I write them.... Amelia Ch7.Pt.1
★
Amelia’s consciousness bobs sluggishly between worlds, both body and mind heavy with sleep and exhaustion.
It is not a familiar sensation.
In the strange pulses of twilit awareness, Amelia finds herself able to ponder the curious feeling. What with all the worry and fright she’d had over the last several days, on top of having those snake nightmares, sleep had been hard to hold onto. It seems to have pulled her down particularly deep tonight to make up for lost time.
Except she’s half awake, now.
Leaden eyelids lift themselves briefly to reveal the hazy, dark remains of a campfire before her. That and the comfortable— and increasingly familiar— weight of a full meal in her belly remind her that she and Lovino had settled into camp after a long day’s travel.
It’s still night-time. Lovino had said they were still far enough away from town and hadn’t yet seemed terribly concerned about being found as they were on the edge of the forest of illusion. Which is weird, because something must have dredged her up out of a dead sleep.
As if to answer this thought, the sound of shifting fabric and a stifled, quiet gasp register from an uncomfortably close distance. Amelia’s senses finally begin to snap back into place while she quickly realizes that there is a shadowy presence hunched over her prone form.
Not for long though.
Just a fraction of a moment too slow, Amelia’s claws barely catch the hem of a long coat as the figure turns to flee. They’re fast. Amelia is up and after it before it can disappear into the surrounding trees.
Though the moon is big tonight, and the trees aren’t particularly dense here, the light doesn’t shine through the trees very strongly. As a result, Amelia can’t see the figure up ahead but she can hear it running and making little noises of frustration every now and then.
Soon she can tell that the figure has broken into what must be a clearing because its footsteps speed up. Damn, and it seems to be putting more distance between them.
When Amelia breaks through the tree-line herself, she can see the moon reflecting off of the remarkably smooth surface of a small pond. On the opposite bank of the pond stands a cat, catching his breath and staring back at her.
“Stop following me!!” The cat shouts at her across the pond. He isn’t shouting very loudly, like he’s trying not to be overheard by anyone else. Amelia can’t sense anyone else out here though, and who would be?? Why is this guy even out here??
The dim moonlight washes out his color and he’s still a good distance away but she can see that he has a youthful, expressive face and long, strangely curved and pointy ears. He appears to be dressed finely, though, he has no cloak or traveling supplies. He doesn’t live out here, does he? No, of course not. There’s not a single territory marking!
Amelia makes a move to the left, intent to confront the suspicious, camp-crashing tom cat, face-to-face (or claw-to-claw) but he mirrors her movements to keep himself opposite her. Amelia sets her jaw and starts jogging around to the right.
“Auugh! Stop!! Don’t come any closer!” He yells as he, too, skirts around in the other direction.
This guy’s the one who encroached on Amelia’s personal space in the first place, so why is he suddenly acting like he’s the victim here? She growls.
“Why!? Tell me what you’re doing out here and what you were trying to pull back there!” She shouts to him, since she doesn’t see a good way to get at him from here... Yet.
“What am I doing out here? What are YOU doing out here??” He shouts back, bristling and pointing back at her accusingly. He then throws his head back with a groan and drags his hands down the sides of his face while he starts to pace back and forth along the bank of the pond.
Amelia gawks at him for a few moments as he does this. Confusion dulls her anger somewhat. Maybe this guy’s just a little bit nuts…
“Uh. Traveling. Not that it’s any of your business.” Amelia says placing her hands on her hips and dipping her head at him in suspicion.
“Ha! None of my business!” He says, looking and sounding distracted. Actually he looks a little bit like Mattie does when Gilbert threatens the twins with unspeakable punishments if they fail to memorize a list of battle maneuvers during their daily stamina training. A touch hysterical.
Uh…! Oh. While looking at him in profile, where she would expect to see a swishy, agitated tail, there is instead a very, very short, wagging tail. It alarms her for a moment before her studies come to mind. The peculiar curved ear shape and the short tail look a lot like the illustrations she’s seen of a race of cats native to an area in the Balian Empire. Their ears are tufted, not curved, and they naturally have short tails.
She’s never seen one in the flesh before.
…Well. There are a lot of things she hasn’t yet seen or experienced, Amelia thinks to herself wryly.
“Actually, no, I don't want to know anything.” The agitated cat says suddenly, stopping in his tracks and pointing at Amelia again. “And you! You need to go back to the rock you crawled out from!”
Taken aback, Amelia stutters.
“Wh— H-How did you—…??”
Before she can finish asking him how he’d known that she’d lived under a rock, or consider explaining that she can’t just go back home, the sound of someone rustling through the forest and making their way toward her captures half of her attention. It’s probably Lovino, but…
“Oh my Gods, you’re running from the Void, aren’t you? And cause you’re a molly—…” He seems to become even more upset, squatting with his head in his hands for a short moment before popping back up. Well. He seems to have an oddly solid grasp on her situation without her adding anything to the conversation. Weird.
“Just stay out of Achena, okay?? I saw nothing!” She sees him pull a small object out of his pocket and swipe it through the air behind him in a wide, vertical arc. Amelia watches in amazement as a… a rip? Appears in thin air in response to his action. A rip which he backs up into while shouting at her one last time.
“And for Libyca’s sake, do NOT go anywhere near the Empire…”
Then he disappears, rip and all.
It takes a moment for Amelia to peel her jaw off the ground.
That was magic. Not the passive stuff, like Singing, but real, honest-to-goodness MAGIC. Who was that guy?
Amelia considers her options for a moment. The rustling from the forest is still on its way toward her, and she can pick up his scent now, it’s Lovino.
Even if she could find a way to follow the mysterious cat, it’s more likely to lead her away from Achena and Mattie than it is to get her closer to it. Best to let it go for now. Should she tell Lovino?
… No. Seems like the strange cat didn’t mean them any harm— though who knows what he was actually up to— and if she mentions it, Lovino is likely to make it a big deal and get all worked up. He’s generally more inconvenient when he’s worked up. Best to avoid that.
Putting the events of the night behind her for now, Amelia turns to reenter the forest and meet Lovino part-way, readying herself to calm him down.
They’ll be in Achena tomorrow. Amelia’s not about to let anything keep her from finding Mattie. Not even unsettling warnings from strange cats that can rip escape holes in the air.
★ A/N: Posting now cause I wanna stop and read it. lol. Apologies for anything that reads weird. Next part we get to Achena! And meet a new suitor! :>

I’ve been deep-dive plotting again (structuring the actual routes!) and so I have little to show for my work yet. Again. Still?
And, y’all are still in tip of the iceburg territory.
As consolation, gimme a suggestion:
I’ll give you a teeny tiny sneak peek into a future character, but ya gotta tell me who. Might do a doodle, might do a blurb. Depends on what inspires me and what I can reveal. Also I’m finally working on a map woooo

Yaay!
Y’all who’ve already read it here may wanna check out Ch 6 in ao3. I smoothed out the previous chapter parts quite a bit. I think it’s worth the reread. 😁
Holy moly, my friend, thank you! That really means a lot to me!
tbqh, I missed it too! A lot! 🤣
Glad to see ya!!
The sketch I did for reference so I could write the last part of Ch 6, lol. Amelia is so very uncomfortable in her disguise.
Amelia - Ch 6. Pt.5
“First, we need to make sure no one will find out that you’re a molly.” He takes a deep breath. “This is going to be uncomfortable but… please trust me.”
--- Several Moments Later ---
Well. Lovino was not wrong, this is pretty, dang uncomfortable!
Amelia looks down at her new disguise and wonders if it will really be as convincing as Lovino says. As she waits for Lovino to get a change of clothes and finish his next, last-minute travel preparations in the Sanctuary, she feels like a bird sitting with all its feathers puffed up as far as they’ll go.
Lovino seemed to know what he was doing though. Kinda like he’s done this before, and more than once. In fact, when he had methodically begun to strip off his cloak, belts, sash, and shirt, it hardly registered as an unusual occurrence until he stood before her, bare chested, and politely asked if she would please take her coat off.
Yeah. She can’t put a pin on why exactly, but that’s when it started getting weird.
Having divested her coat, Lovino explained that he would wrap his wide sash around her torso to hide the curves on her body: tightly across her breast, loose around her waist. He then began to add layers. Her bulky coat followed by his blousy shirt, belted low on her hips. Then his cloak and pauldrons to top it off.
Amelia has no idea what she looks like in this bulky, restrictive get up, so she’ll just have to trust in Lovino’s sense, like he said.
The weirdest and most embarrassing characteristic of this disguise, though—and she hadn’t had the nerve to mention it in the moment— is that she most definitely smells like a travel-worn Lovino.
Amelia is no stranger to the smell of sweat and musk. In fact, she’s surprised to find that Lovino’s clothes don’t smell half as bad as she’d expected them to. What throws her is how extraordinarily… well— intimate a thing it is to be smothered in the scent of another cat so thoroughly. The only reason Amelia didn’t question this decision was that bringing attention to it would have just mortified the two of them into dust, right where they stood. She could tell by the way Lovino determinedly refused to look her in the eyes even once. Besides as far as disguises go, you really can’t do better than covering up your scent like this. Lovino’s choice to use his traveled-in clothes was deliberate.
Eugh. This is going to take some getting used to.
“Ah. I do not envy you, Amelia.” Says a cool voice with a hint of amusement from Amelia’s back. “But Lovino really is quite good at scheming up covert operations on the fly. I can hardly recognize you.”
Distracted as Amelia is by her predicament, Natalya had managed to sneak right up behind her, but Amelia can only turn to her and send her a pitiful look.
Natalya returns a very small, but reassuring smile and takes Amelia’s hands in hers.
“If anyone can do this, I believe you can do it.” Natalya says simply. Amelia feels her heart bursting with hope again, suddenly, and a prickle of tears threatens the corners of her eyes.
“Yeah??” Amelia asks, greedy for more reassurance.
Natalya nods once and placidly raises her hands to the top of her head. Amelia watches as Natalya pulls apart her customary bow and pulls the long, pale ribbon from her long, pale hair. She then lowers the hood covering Amelia’s head and ties the ribbon gently around her neck before carefully tucking it into the cloak under Lovino’s pauldrons.
“Sorry to burden you further, but I wanted to give you token of good luck.” Natalya says, returning the hood of Lovino’s cloak to its position over Amelia’s head. “I hope it will remind you of us.”
“Oh! It’s no burden at all, Nat! Thank you!” Amelia takes Natalya’s hands again and nods fervently. “I will definitely remember! And I’ll come to visit after I find Mattie!”
“Thank you.” Natalya repeats.
The sound of approaching footsteps catches Natalya’s attention. She turns her head smoothly to face source.
Lovino has returned! Sporting a fresh travel-pack and a fresh change of clothes, Lovino stands beside Amelia and gives Natalya a strange look. A look like he wouldn’t have expected her to be here.
“Natalya. Everything okay?” Lovino asks. He pulls a pair of dark, leather gloves out of his back pocket and begins to put them on. Wow, though, they are nicely made.
“Yes, of course.” Natalya nods coolly, as she often does. “I am only saying goodbye.”
Natalya faces Amelia again and squeezes her hands one last time before letting go.
“Katya sends her regards, as well. Travel safely.” Natalya says with a small wave. She then makes her way back toward the Sanctuary. Amelia waves and hollers back.
“Thanks, Nat! See ya!”
Smiling, Amelia turns her full attention back to Lovino. He has an eyebrow raised briefly, but his face settles into something a little more like relief. Perhaps to see that Amelia’s mood has improved.
“I see you’ve made friends.” He’s finished donning his second glove and leans a forearm against the rather fancily crafted hilt of a sword she’d never seen him wearing before. It’s quite long and has a very thin blade by the looks of its matching scabbard.
Now that she’s looking, Amelia can see that the two-tone leather jacket he’s changed into is also of fine quality and tailored to fit him perfectly. Having been the primary crafter of clothing back home, Amelia knows her way around textiles and a needle well enough, and the stitching and seamlines are very impressive! Is this the kind of nice stuff you can find in Achena? Lovino’s old clothes that she’s wearing aren’t necessarily shabby in comparison, but they certainly don’t stand out the way he does now.
Lovino notices Amelia checking out his new style and looks away grimacing.
“My other shirt is covered in mud… I ran out of options.”
“Haha! No, dude, I’m just impressed!” Amelia says. She laughs again and claps Lovino’s back amiably. It’s great that the awkwardness and tension from earlier have dissipated and Amelia’s keen to keep it that way. “Ready-- ??”
Lovino emits a strangled noise and stumbles forward from the force of her whacks. Oops.
“Ah-- ! …Haha! Sorry, Lovi. Sometimes I forget to hold back!”

What, what? What is this?? An update??
HI FOLKS. I had Lamentalia on the backburner for a while cause. Well. 2020. But in light of some good news, I managed to get some words down! Did a little reviewing (against my own advice), some more plotting, and even drew a thing that I’ll post up momentarily!
Speaking of which, Hetalia 2021, what??
You’re back!! :D
I am!!! :D Thanks!
Alfred - Ch. 5 - pt. 4.2 Bonus
★
“Good.” Lovino says and then makes his way out of the room. Someone must’ve been standing just outside the door, because Lovino nearly collides with them.
“Shit! Watch it!” Lovino says. Glancing outside Alfred can see Feliciano’s smiling face over Lovino’s shoulder. They begin talking to each other in that other language again. Alfred listens to their conversation idly as he finally refills and drinks two or three times from the cup still clutched in his hand.
"Feli, non basta. Lo hai visto? È tutto pelle e ossa!"
"Eeh? È tutto ciò che era rimasto sul fuoco.."
"Ugh, bene. Prenderò qualcosa prima di andare. Devo comunque prendere delle provviste."
"Oh? Aspetta, te ne vai di nuovo? Perché?"
"Non ti riguarda, tornerò in due o tre giorni."
By the time they end their conversation, and Lovino has left Feliciano standing in the doorway staring after him, Alfred has made his way back to his bed and set his full cup back on the bedside table.
When Alfred sits back down on the bed, Feliciano turns to look at him curiously and enters the room. Alfred finally notices the tray he’s carrying. Oh shit, is that food?
“Oh shit, is that food?” Alfred asks. He swallows down the saliva pooling in his mouth at the thought of getting to eat whatever he’s been smelling this whole time.
“Of course! There will be more if you like.” Feliciano smiles at him.
Feliciano sets the tray next to Alfred on the bed and the sight alone blows away any expectations he’d had. First of all, there’s meat. Actual, not dried, roasted meat. Vegetables, the sauce he saw earlier, and things he has never seen before. And oh gods, if only Mattie were here…
“Alfred?” Feliciano repeats while Alfred continues to stare. His vision gets blurry, and his nose is stuffy all of a sudden. He looks up at Feliciano, sniffing loudly.
“Uh… huh?” He says distractedly, voice cracking.
“Eh?? Oh no, what’s wrong??” He says looking back down at the tray of food, alarmed. Alfred shakes his head and swipes his arm across his runny nose.
“No… nothing!” Alfred says. He lets out a choked laugh. “I just… it looks really good. Thanks. For sharing your food with me.”
“Oh… I see.” Feliciano says, looking relieved and sympathetic. “Then you are welcome! But Alfred, I want to ask…”
Feliciano sits on the edge of the bed, turned to face Alfred, his expression deeply curious, maybe even conspiratorial. “What did you and Lovi talk about?”
“Oh, just now?” Alfred asks. Feliciano nods. “Hmm. Well, at first he tried to threaten me. But if he was really gonna do it, I’m pretty sure I’d just be dead by now, being such a critical liability. I wasn’t really concerned about that. But Katya told me about this place and I admire what you guys do here. Like, really. Which is what I told him, so that maybe he can worry less about it?”
Feliciano hums a quiet, thoughtful noise, but remains otherwise silent so Alfred continues.
“And then he said I look dumb.” Alfred shrugs. “But then he asked me about my brother Mattie… Me and him, we got separated, see? And I need to find him. So I told him where we were last I knew… and then he left.” Alfred can feel the same, puzzling emotion rising again. Maybe Feliciano knows what his brother’s thinking.
“And that’s all?” Feliciano asks, head cocked to the side. Alfred nods.
“Um. Before he left, he told me to stay away from the mollies and to leave as soon as I’m recovered.” Alfred scratches behind his ear, laughing awkwardly. “He doesn’t like me very much.”
But Feliciano is grinning.
“Oh, I don’t know about that.” He says, standing up. “Before he marched in here he said he was going to throw you out immediately. You must have said something to change his mind!”
“Is he… Did he say something to you? Like, about my brother?” Alfred asks.
“Hmmm… Not specifically, but he did say that he’ll be gone for a couple of days, and he hadn’t planned on doing that before he talked with you. He’s probably gonna ask around about him!” Feliciano says cheerily, retreating out the door with a bounce in his step. “I’ll be back with the rest of your dinner in a minute. Let me or Feliks know if you need anything!”
Alfred’s heart leaps just a little bit. On the one hand he feels bad for Lovino to go through such trouble for him while he’s laying around in bed, but on the other… he really can’t afford to refuse the help. Alfred looks back down at the tray of food and grabs the fork. Time to get recovering! He can’t let this time go to waste.

A/N: Ok, I wrote this forever ago. I didn’t know if I should put it in at the end of the chapter cause it kind of cut the tension where I didn’t want it to. But it mirrors the Amelia path a bit and. Well. I do what I want, I guess? So have this thing as a bonus. I’m resisting the urge to rewrite everything.¯\_( ̄ヮ ̄)_/¯ rewrite =/= progress. Rewrite comes after completion. Thanks again to @flamaflavio. You’re always awesome.
Everything okay?
Quick update on yours truly:
Rage quit my job, finally.
Didn’t have a job for like 4 months. Looked for one.
Joined a DnD campaign with a group of friends to stave off the growing anxiety.
Finally found a job and started settling down to it.
I’m doing a lot better now, thank you. :D
While I’m still getting used to my new lifestyle (I’m working a remote position permanently. Its taking a lot of adjusting!) I started getting comfortable enough to get writing again.
I think I’m at a point where I need to focus on one character path for a while, though. If you’re inclined, feel free to give me your vote for either Amelia or Alfred.
Sorry for the radio silence, folks. Life does things.
Hope everyone’s doing well and not going crazy with cabin fever. :3;;
