Kat Graham on Baby This Is Keke Palmer Podcast: Here Kat details how being a minority has impacted her in the industry and how common it was for black people and people of color to go underrepresented. It’s not something you think about as often because you are adjusted to being unseen.

What changed overtime when more audiences felt underrepresented when watching TVD. Kat explained how she spoke to the writers, executives and tried to change things because she was a minority just like some of the audiences watching. She even gives an opinion on how the industry had a shift towards black people. Since the conversations have changed some cast members have been more supportive but as for the writers Kat believes if they knew better they would have done better.

Kat has talked about being angry in her book Seasons Of You that she didn’t stand up for herself better back then as a young-woman and even feeling guilty for how Bonnie was treated when it was never her fault in reality. If there was room for her white counterparts there was room for her. There shouldn’t be anyone disregarded because they are different.

I just want to say to fans of color out there to know that your voice matters! You have power right within you.

as someone who’s not really into romance *stares at ship list* it says something that i watched the entirety of season 1 in 2021 and did not gaf about mel and jayce (together) just to get it immediately when season 2 started lmaoooo

so i decided to look back at season 1 cuz i feel like i may have missed some stuff and the scenes that stand out to me the most are actually the ones with ambessa:

when i first saw this i remember thinking girl why are you trying to seduce your daughter’s man hello? also the fact that ambessa is the first one in canon to acknowledge mel’s feelings for jayce despite being so far removed from her life at this point. at first i thought it was just her way of intimidating him to get him flustered and i still think that’s what it was but,

in the next scene involving ambessa and a meljay mention, mel is the one who gives ambessa the reaction she wanted… from jayce. so much so that ambessa scolds her for it. “i taught you better”, as if mel fell for the bait she uses on most of their enemies. or maybe the bait she once fell for. (also can we talk about the growl when mel says jayce… can we talk about itttt)

all that to say as the mel pilled truther that i am, i think these are the most impactful scenes when it comes to showing mel’s love for jayce. since jayce is more outwardly affectionate, it strengthens this whole “she manipulated him/never loved him” narrative i keep seeing (and no, idc if you’re not seeing people say those things because i am!!), when i personally think this one scene is a lot more impactful than anything from his side.

bonus:

this scene has also given me a lot of pause. mel having a visceral nightmare about her mother and her home and they make sure to show us her waking up next to him. for what? and that look.

like what was that about? i still don’t really know what to make of it but it reminds me of her seeing his face when she’s in the void in season 2. like did she feel guilty for pursuing him? is she mad at herself for caring about someone for the first time since she was banished? did she think she put him in danger being with her knowing how her mother gets? it triggers curiosity.
