Slavery was abolished in Canada on Aug. 1, 1834
From this year forward, Aug. 1 will be known as Emancipation Day in B.C., marking the day slavery was abolished across Canada in 1834.
The proclamation was made Thursday by the B.C. government.
“Although the [Black] community has been here for more than 150 years, the experience of Black British Columbians continues to be marginalized,” said Rachna Singh, parliamentary secretary for anti-racism initiatives.
“But this is a province that has been shaped by the contributions of Black Canadians throughout our history.”
She said Emancipation Day will highlight the achievements of Black British Columbians.

Imperialism kills.
They stole the land and killed the children.
Following the brutal July 8th police murder of 38 year old Wet’suwet’en man, Jared Lowndes, a number of actions were held this past week in his memory and in outrage of his killing. Jared was shot six times and killed outside of a Tim Hortons in Campbell River, BC after RCMP boxed his car in and set a police dog on him inside his car. The police dog was killed as Jared tried to protect himself and his own dog from its attacks. Following Jared’s murder the RCMP organized a public procession and funeral for the police dog which Jared’s family say has fueled racism in the community. Media coverage has consistently focused on the death of the dog rather than Jared’s murder.
Jared’s murder is the third time in recent months that police dogs, who have been injured or killed while attacking Indigenous people, have been the focus of more public mourning than the humans murdered by the police. In late June, Lionel Ernest Grey, from the Gift Lake Metis Settlement, was killed by RCMP. A 28 year old man was killed by police near Cold Lake, Alberta on June 20th. In both cases, the police dogs injured or killed during the killings were the focus of the media surrounding the incidents.
In Campbell River, a rolling memorial was held on July 20. Mourners, including Jared’s mother, carried his ashes to multiple locations in the city including the Campbell River RCMP detachment. While there, Jared’s mother expressed her fury at the police for killing her son. As reported by the National Observer, Jared’s mother told the RCMP sent to speak to her during the memorial: “You don’t understand! You were created to control and kill Indians and you have not stopped.”
The memorial for Jared set up outside the Tim Hortons where he was killed has been destroyed multiple times.

And EHS is super, super fucked right now. Like I cannot tell you how fucked the ambulance service is in this province. I’m talking the other night there were 2-3 hour waits for calls marked as code 3 (that’s highest level emergency). If you’re not a code 3, they might have one for you next week sometime.
So, if you’re in BC and in need of medical care, I implore you: If you can get yourself to the hospital rather than calling EHS, DO IT. If you can wait another day and go to the clinic in the morning instead, DO IT. Please do not call for an ambulance or go to the emergency room right now unless you really and truly need it.

The Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) is launching an interactive map of cases of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls to collect data and help identify patterns of violence in geographic areas.
The project is called Safe Passage.
“Every day I talk to moms that have lost their children and they can’t find them,” said Lynne Groulx, NWAC’s CEO.
She said that as a mother herself she can’t imagine not being able to find the remains of her child.
The final report of the national inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls found a significant lack of data on cases.
