Chapter 1

The carriage moved too slow for your liking.

Dread sat heavy in your stomach, persistent in the ache plaguing you and gnawing on your insides like a ravenous wolf. You would not give in. The horrifying news of your sudden engagement was still on your mind, the gut-wrenching words ringing without cease in your ears. A woman who was not keen on being a submissive wife at every man’s beck and call and demand, you made the error of protesting – quite passionately, actually – and your father made certain you would obey. The occasional sharp stings radiating from your back was a harsh reminder of that day. You did not have either the desire or the energy to go through that again so soon, and you would hate to trouble Marian, your hand maid, for what has felt the millionth time in a matter of days.

If you could keep her emotions in check until you met her betrothed, all would be well.
