I tend to like old obscure rpgs, but here’s one that’s relatively new and obscure! Wayfarers is one of my “desert island” rpgs. It’s essentially a gritty, point-buy D&D. There are no character classes, just point costs for various abilities, like a very simplified d20 version of GURPS. Its equivalent of modern D&D’s “feats” are much cooler and useful in play than those of 5e and avoid 4e’s feeling of “everyone is a mage”. Hit points are lower, meaning characters and monsters aren’t just giant bags of HP slugging it out until one drops. It also means that abilities that give an extra point of damage are meaningful and stay that way as you level up. Armour reduces damage rather than adding to AC, reducing the issue of un-hittable targets. The skill system mirrors (and predates) the advantage/disadvantage mechanic, so extra levels of skill add to a d20 pool, out of which you pick the highest roll. Simple and elegant. If you want your D&D gritty but flexible, this is the game you want. #yyc #calgary #alberta #canada #rpg #game #dice #games #gamer #tabletop #roleplayinggame #dnd #d20 #fun #polyhedraldice #dungeonsanddragons #tabletopgames #ttrpg #book #wayfarersrpg (at Calgary, Alberta) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfGAEYqLRJv/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
