“ It's basic color theory, ” Josefina says, each word carefully enunciated as she looks directly into Ada's eyes. whether the repetition of her own words was intended to be threatening or not is entirely lost on the founder – its effect is clear, and she clenches her flute of champagne ever-so-slightly tighter. “ Besides, blue is typically associated more with harmony, tranquility, and truth, all things we aspire to embody in our company. ”

Josefina sets her champagne flute down on the table. if she grips it any more, she's afraid it'll shatter, slicing her palm open. she wonders if the swarm of reporters awaiting her would find a way to make even that newsworthy; she can all but see the headlines in her mind. Josefina tucks a stray strand of hair behind her ear, her smile never once fading. she's grown accustomed to noticing others' thinly veiled hatred for her, and she's learned that keeping her head held high is really the only way to acknowledge it.

“ Yes, well, we do so love a success story. ”

her husband did, at the very least. Josefina repackaged that same old story for Apolo Rojas time and time again, always painting him as the Hen.ry Higg.ins to her Eli.za Dool.ittle, how he plucked the coy, blushing flower from the streets and transformed her into his political ally. how he reformed her, made her beautiful, canonized her. never mind how Josefina's done that very thing for him, immortalizing him solely by virtue of connecting him to her charisma, her speeches, and her rapport with the people. she's planned everything, plotted and schemed and fucked her way to the top. but you know how men are. Josefina will never be able to voice any of this without tugging at the strings of insecurity behind her husband's facade, and. well. he'd simply unravel without his dear wife, wouldn't he?

“ To undo Umbrella's harm. Ah, yes, exactly. It's not... the easiest task that we have set before us, but we're hoping that it's not impossible. We make a pretty good team, my husband and I. ”Josefina folds her hands in front of her, mock innocent. if Ada wants to call her out, secretly or not, let her see how vulnerable she can be. let her see how powerful even her openness is, how it can be sharpened and weaponized and – her eyes begin brimming with tears that she's summoned from the depths of her soul. crying on cue isn't the worst thing she's done for attention. “ This all just means so, so much to me. To both of us, really. We could never have imagined the public's response to our initiative would be so positive, so... affectionate. And to think, I was just some college girl with a dream not-too-long ago. It's unfathomable, really, that all of this has become what it is. ”

"Basic color theory," she repeated, looking around the function as Josefina's eyes did. What she looked at- the people, the reporters. What was important to her was the face and reputation of her brainchild. Blue Umbrella was packaged like a rattling toy for an infant or a spoon of mashed food for the easily entertained. The same generation aging and rotting in their nicely decorated tombs and passing around girls at mansion parties would eat Blue Umbrella up like the latest in a fashion food.

Ada, in red, and seeing very little else, listened to the rest of the composed speech.

She laughed, a soft, "heh". There were tears in the air now. Josefina was so proud. Ada Wong, for the first time, seemed to be alive in her own body. There was a sparkle in her eye, she was looking sharply at the tears welling up in her eyes. Carla put her glass to her lips and worried a cut edge over the skin.

"Josef Albers wrote a treatise on the subject of color. The Interaction of Color."

She sipped in the pause. Fancy champagne.

"One of my favorite excerpts from it describes a haptic illusion; You touch one thing, but in that touch, draw from it a mistaken sensory input. Qualia to explain relationships between colors, and perceptions."

Ada lingered on it, and her smile widened over the glass. There wasn't any mistaking in the signal. She wanted to eat her.

"I wonder when your husband touches you what does he feel?"

Derek was drifting further away, and she felt this... invisible leash around her neck grow taut.

"It's just basic color theory. Simmons is calling me, though."

"Hiya Doc. How about you work yourself to death to feel something again so I can tell you I told you so?"

Despite her current condition in the guild's infirmary with IV fluids running into her, Rebecca had been too focused on her laptop to notice Ahab's entry. Even ill herself, she'd been tirelessly looking over the data she'd collected previously, along with everything she could find on epsilon and the deaths of the Raccoon City survivors. Despite Ahab's warnings to rest, she'd persisted, and eventually that strain had rendered her stuck in a cot under the other's care.

Typically, she'd been the one giving others IV fluids.

"I'd say, given this dynamic has always been reversed between us, you already get to say that line." A sigh slips from her lips as she shifts against the pillow behind her before closing her laptop. "I'm feeling better." Or at least, as much as she can be with the latent infection coursing through her.

"The honor is all mine," said the man beside her, a white blot in the midst of a sea of formal business grays and black. Derek Simmons, the politician, the philanthropist, and the up and coming head of National Security, was tall, and imposing. He was regarding the world with a set of very intelligent and unreadable eyes, and deciding what would be worth his time. He was very neatly groomed for the occasion, not suffering any hair out of place. His arrival was quiet, and invasive, and he eclipsed the very beautiful woman beside him. She was wearing a long, gorgeous dress, wine red, with embroidered butterflies and open flowers slithering up the open slit side. A black ribbon was pinned about her neck that fluttered when she moved.

"Derek C. Simmons," he said, "We met at your shareholder banquet. And this beautiful bird is Ada Wong."

Her dress... It didn't seem to fit her. Not in the sense that it hadn't been tailored properly, but the dress didn't match her rather empty, manicured smile. Derek Simmons tapped her shoulder with his palm, ushering her a few steps forward to speak. The woman's hair had been combed to a glossy black shine, her nails buffed and painted a deep red.

"Yes, I'm Ada. Ada Wong."

"Ada Wong" smiled then, but it remained quite empty, and on some level, there was a tension in her jaw like she had been setting her teeth.

"Yes. We couldn't miss this. Your induction ceremony into the real world of business. We are happy for you."

"Indeed," Derek said, "I'm interested in your vision for the future of your company, as we'll be working closely together with Blue Umbrella to strengthen global security."

A beat while he swirled a champagne glass between his fingers. He hummed a moment, "Make acquaintance with our partner, I'm going to speak with Selvan."

He left her alone then, empty eyed, watching Josephina.

"So, You're Derek's new business partner. Blue Umbrella, huh? How'd you arrive at the name?"

Josefina's own pale blue dress matches her husband's outfit, instantly making the pair the standouts amongst tonight's crowd. the fact that this couple have chosen their own signature colors irritates her to no end, but she offers the same smile she offers all of her donors. such kind benefactors are they, and she wouldn't be where she is now without their generous assistance, and she hopes that she can donate some of her vast wealth to charity once this is all over. really, it's a shame that scriptwriting doesn't bring the same attention acting does, for Josefina's always been plenty good at writing her own lines for herself. oh, this man is still speaking to her? she'd gotten distracted.

“ Ah, yes, I remember now. A pleasure to see you again, Derek, ” Josefina greets, offering her hand for a polite shake. “ And lovely to meet you, too, Ada. Your dress is beautiful. Red's certainly your color. ”

she'd remembered hating him even then, remembered thinking he probably called her whore behind her back like the rest of her husband's circle. they all claimed she fucked her way into this, sure, but what's so wrong with that? Josefina would rather cement herself in history as Blue Umbrella's founder than some discarded mistress, and her marriage solidified that. how she got here mattered very little; she'd forsaken her origins when she'd forsaken Alejandro all those years ago, and she never looked back. Ada claims the pair are happy for her, and she places a hand to her heart, smiling.

“ You're too sweet, really. It took a lot of work for us to get here, but I don't regret a thing about it. It's not too often you get to see a real life Cinderella story, right? ”Josefina laughs a little, clinking her glass of champagne against Derek's cheerfully. she waves him a goodbye, not missing his presence one bit once he departs their conversation. “ There's a Hindi film called The Blue Umbrella that I watched for a college course a while ago and enjoyed. In it, a girl trades away her prized possession for a blue umbrella. She ends up being able to share it with her community, and her endless generosity overcomes the class divisions in her area. I – we – aim to do something similar with our company. Besides, the original corporation's logo was red, and red and blue are often viewed as opposites, so... that's what we had in mind when we chose the name. ”

Ada Wong laughed, tipping the flute of champagne in her hand forward a bit while she maintained her vacant smile. Blue the opposite of red. Sometimes. She had faulty cones in her eyes. It was funny, parsing that comment from the perspective of thinking, really, these statements are just that– statements.

Blue Umbrella was a laugh. And a startup. The glass ceiling wouldn't be too far behind for this woman to crash through. Ada laughed for a little too long at "The Blue Umbrella", and faded into an empty silence for another beat too long. The silence pressed on the conversation as she wobbled the stem of her drink a bit.

"I'm sure you worked very hard."

Another empty statement. Nothing she said seemed to connect to her body. It was like a machine with slow processing producing sentences that frustrated itself.

"Right."

Derek was mingling, and speaking to someone else. She could hear his voice in the crowd somewhere over the din of this party. What really was the point of the celebration. There wasn't any work in it. It was just money flowing, and people speaking to other, like-minded people.

Ada continued to wobble the champagne stem back and forth.

"So your mission is to undo Umbrella's harm?"

No it's not. She can see it in the money. It's the overdone dress and how much meaning she put behind it.

"How admirable."
