Struggling as a biracial isn't talked about enough. In this podcast we will discuss the good and bad of being biracial.
I am glad to finally announce that the misfits podcasts is now live!
Final adjustments before publishing media output. Using Adobe Premier Pro for both media output. Also utilizing Adobe Podcasts Beta to enhance audio.
I stumbled upon this tool called Adobe Podcasts which is still in beta. This really helped with enhancing the audio for my recordings.
Inspo for video
I have been intrigued with Joe Sabia's 73 question videos for a while now. The idea of doing a one take interview while following the interviewee around in their daily life looks so simple and easy to do yet I know it'll be challenging. I am aiming to produce a video like this.
5 stages that people with biracial identity experience during their lifetime in shaping themselves as a biracial person (Poston, 1990). - Level one, Personal Identity - a phase when the person (during childhood) not having a personal racial preference. This phase usually happens due to lack of realization of the differences between races. - Level two, Choice of Group Categorization - a phase when the person starts to realize the differences and starts to prefer one of the racial identities due to appearance, status, etc. - Level three, Enmeshment/Denial - a phase when the person starts to feel like they don’t belong to both of the racial identities due to not being familiar or relatable to any of the racial culture/background which results in guilt that leads to shame and anger. - Level four, Appreciation - a phase where the person starts to understand the diverse biracial background. During this phase the person starts to appreciate the differences between races. - Level five, Integration - during this phase the individual values all of their ethnic backgrounds into their identity.
A podcasts I found during my research is an ongoing series titled Being Biracial by Maria Birch Morunga and Kate Robinson. Similar to the YouTube videos, the podcast explores the daily encounters of a biracial person but with a more positive energy. The podcast explores embracing/reclaiming the culture as a biracial person. The tone of the podcast has a similar tone to the first two YouTube videos I mentioned. The podcast uses a lot of pathos by exploring the speaker's life experiences.
An additional 3 videos that I found discussing biracial struggles, all of it provides insights of daily encounters that biracial people face. The YouTube videos vary in their tones, for example in a video titled What's It Like Being Mixed Race in Japan? | Blasian vs Wasian by JesseOgn and a video titled Do All Multiracial People Think The Same? | Spectrum by Jubilee, both videos use a humorous, informal, conversational, and friendly tone, whereas in a video by TEDx Talks have a more formal, informative, serious, and optimistic tone. Both types of videos have different tones but still sending the message that biracial struggle is a serious matter. All the videos use pathos which successfully caught the viewers emotion by sharing their life's experience, and by doing so viewers who are biracial or have some sort of identity crisis would relate.
A YouTube video by subchannel of BuzzFeed that I found a few years back has resurfaced during my research. The video talks about the struggles of being a biracial person, starting from people identifying you as a certain race, rejection, identity crisis, etc.
Biracial Struggles
Initially, I wanted to explore identity crisis as my project, but as I was digging deeper to what topic sticks to me most, I have decided to chose a topic that is quite personal, biracial struggles. As a biracial, I would like to explore the struggles that other biracials face. I am curious if there are others that face similar problems as me.
