bro the cinematography, the lighting, the diagetic elements, the costume design, the dialogues, the camera angles, the way the narrative unfolds and everything else in this movie is so good..💯
it’s about grief it’s about letting go it’s about hey this is how my mum used to make it!! it’s about making unlikely friends along the way it’s about little old ladies looking after you even when you can’t look after yourself it’s about mothers and motherhood it’s about holding on tight and accepting the help that is given it’s about seeing the fiery state of the world and choosing to live in it anyway it’s about we will meet again someday!!! it’s about cute round little creatures that make you go awww
I’m thinking about Mahito’s great great uncle maintaining and preserving a peaceful and beautiful thing in a way that to an outside observer looks tedious and unimportant, hoping to pass the duty off to a successor but ultimately he cannot find one and dies with it.
I’m thinking about the specificity of the blocks being made and handled with care, not with malice or ill intent.
I’m thinking about Hayao Miyazaki, a bastion of beautiful 2d hand drawn animation who refuses to retire.
I’m thinking about a world where animation is so rarely made with love over profit and efficiency.
I’m thinking about how, though the old man didn’t see it, the next generation still hangs onto a piece of that beautiful, tedious thing and takes it with them because it feels important.
I’m thinking about Mahito being told he should forget, but no. He shouldn’t.
how do you live?
EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE
nobody prepares you for the realization that basically every story, basically every movie is about love in one way or another. how am I supposed to feel now

as a regular donor to Gaza Soup Kitchen I get their email updates, and they said today that while they've continued to be able to expand, donations are slowing down as Gaza gets less coverage. If you have a few dollars to spare, I encourage you to send them here to continue the amazing work that Hani and his team are doing.
I kind of miss the impulsivity that certain spaces used to allow. oh you want a hair cut today? hairdresser in the corner can fit you in before her 2 o’clock. tattoo of a cobra… sure leg or arm? even concerts, back when you could go to the box office thirty mins before any show. not saying these things don’t exist at all, but everything feels booked five months in advance and 10x more expensive
they used to let kids have real fun
There's an xkcd for that :3
Side note: polonium-210 is a very dangerous isotope, however it "does not pose a radiation hazard when kept outside the body", as the alpha particle it emits have very little penetration power and cannot pierce even the outer layers of dead skin. It has still killed countless people, though, not because of children's rings, but because of tobacco. Polonium latches onto and concentrates in tobacco leaves, leading to heavy smokers being exposed to more radiation than survivors of the Chernobyl disaster.
It's always wild to me seeing comments about different toxins like this on information about random things in the past, but it's never discussed when it comes to cigarettes.
Adding a relevant source on the polonium-210 in tobacco and how the industry tried to keep it quiet

I think some of the loneliness of autism is that you feel like you hurt people just by Interacting Wrong, but you don’t know how to Interact Right, and the more effort you put into it, the more exhausted you are and the more artificial it comes across (with the end result of people still being upset with you). and it’s not anyone’s fault for not liking Being Interacted With Wrong, and it’s not your fault for doing it so wrong, but it is very, very lonely.
#yeah this is why i was so glad i took an interpersonal communication class with a teacher that came at it from that angle #it doesn't stop the problem but it allows me to have skills to troubleshoot what the fuck happened #and then make the suckier shit happen less often #it also helps me figure out when im the problem or when someone is just being an asshole in my direction (x)
Communication is indeed a skill! This means you can learn it, and practice it! It is possible to become better at communicating, even if you suck at it originally! Everyone does in fact benefit from formally learning about communication!
There's nothing left for him. His daughter. He wasn't her father, either. She loves him. She'll survive. She's young. I don't want you to die. Don't kill him. Let him live. Let him live. Don't kill him.
