Love queer fantasy and horror? Love audio drama? Good with sound design, or just always wanted to try your hand? Amazing news! We're looking for a sound designer to join our team to continue making our queer fantasy/horror audio drama, The Attic Monologues.

The workload is no more than one episode per month, compensated at £50 per episode as this is a side project, student-led and non-union.

We work with all timezones, and have some incredible folks on the team already, such as Jura Leopold, Alex Abrahams, Alasdair Stuart, and more!

With some frequency I see posts/art by people I've seen draw Ethics Town fanart on my secret, personal, non-podcast dashboard and while initially I'm like, "Woah! Small world!" it's like no, the people who enjoy Ethics Town are more likely than anyone else in the world to enjoy the other things I like, of course this would happen

No, this still isn't an 'I'm shutting it all down' post, promise! This year has been harder and busier than I ever could have anticipated, but I'm still going to finish at the very least the scripts this year. I just want to generally let you all know how much I appreciate you.

Even you, people who listen to one episode of the show then come to tell me personally how much you hate it. I in fact think you're very funny and don't really mind.

I don't check the tags as dedicatedly as I do while seasons are airing, but every time I come on here there are always lovely people talking about the show and making art. It's really sweet and no matter how taxing the show-making process becomes it makes it worth it. So, thank you.

Tangentially related story below:

I've been getting into a new Thing lately and writing fanfic for it. This Thing started life as a podcast - not an audio drama, but a series on someone's patreon chat show podcast. The guy's mega famous and his fans really enjoyed the show as it was airing - for good reason, it is sort of his magnum opus and I liked it enough to write fanfic for it.

The podcast was popular enough that, a few years later, it was turned into a book. And this year (very soon) it's getting a screen adaptation. All in all it's been around for about 6 years and gone through three very popular iterations, yet somehow I'm the first person to ever write fanfiction for it. It now has 4 fanfics, 3 of them written by me (if we're going by word count, 97% written by me 😭).

Meanwhile, my crappy little radio show that you are all kind enough to enjoy has 10?!*

*I would like to once again clarify I do not and never have read Ethics Town fanfics but 1. I know they'e out there because I sometimes share links here to help people find more fans and 2. I was curious so I looked it up, top line stats only, I don't even read the titles.

It feels good to be beating a horrible old white man in this one specific metric. Thanks gang.

On the other hand, it is kind of frustrating that the one fandom I literally cannot read fanfic for has more fanfic than the fandom I desperately want someone else to write fanfic for lol. Thus is the world.

Anyway, I appreciate you all. If my next 6 months are even marginally better than my last 6 I should hopefully get somewhere with S3 by the end of the year!

I keep seeing that one post that's like "the average podcast protagonist is a twink!!!" but if you think about it there aren't that many podcast protagonists whose body type has been mentioned or confimed as canon and ones I can think of are Mike Walters (fat), Sydney Sargent (also fat) January Johnson (ALSO fat) Warren Godby who is admittedly skinny but like whatever (also these are just examples i can think of of the top of mu head id didn't do much research) and the rest is just fans assuming they are twinks because of course so ACTUALLY the average podcast protagonist is BEAUTIFUL AWSOME AND FAT AND THAT IS THE FACTS RIGHT THERE !!!!!!!!!!

This absurdist comedy follows Gil, an extremely unlucky man who has never seen a piece of unburnt toast in his life. He discovers not only has he been a loser historically, he is fated to always be one. He decides to fight fate tooth and claw. He defies the course of his arrow! Completed with 8 episodes. Full cast.

The Antique Shop

This urban fantasy podcast heavily focused on Scottish folklore follows Maya, a uni student who finds a job at a strange antique shop. The items sold have magic elements that will steer the course of their customers lives, and the shop owner, Madam Norna, helps people with problems. This becomes a story about working with, against, and alongside Fate. Completed with 50 episodes. Single narrator.

Ethics Town

This absurdist cosmic horror follows the residents of the town of Ethics. Imagine, if you will being a character in a fable. You are doomed to follow the steps of your role and teach the reader a lesson. You are not in control of your actions. They are written for you. So why are you dealing with the consequences? 2 full seasons out. Full cast.

Started listening to @ethicstownprod on my walk tonight, absolutely hooked! Genuinely one of the most strange and brilliant concepts I’ve encountered, and as someone who was a philosophy dork (lmao, was, is) the idea of a show that uses ethical concepts as its story engine every episode is nothing short of inspired. Do not sleep on this show!

The fiction podcast liveshow is actually such an interesting medium to me. It's a stage play but it's also kind of not. It's an audio production but it's also kind of not.

The voices we've known privately in our headphones are spoken by faces in front of our own eyes and the eyes of a crowd. The actors will sound like their characters, but might not look like them at all. We don't need the actors to know their lines by heart, or for there to be any props or stage dressing, for us to believe in the story. An actor's facial expressions, some body language, and some movement will generally reflect the attitude of their character, but the characters' actions won't always be acted out literally in front of us. The story is usually understandable entirely through audio, but we gain something unique through the visual experience.

It's theatre at its most figurative. It's voice acting at its most embodied. The show lives on the stage or in our ears or somewhere in between.
