That she made no attempt at beguiling nudges was a small blessing, so much as that word applied in a transaction like theirs. Better sardonic, undisguised mocking than honeyed words souring once his back was turned—better to hear the stakes before he wagered.

❝ As much as I would like to attend to my own affairs, at a point, bravery and temerity overlap. ❞ Folding his arms behind his back, he cast a glance down her languorous form. ❝ I don’t expect you to find it for me, if it can be returned, but your kind would know better where to begin. ❞ Even to his own pricked ears, the presumption of every word rang clear; perhaps no method of his could allow passage into Hell, and perhaps even if it did, it would be barely better than suicide. —𝑭𝑶𝑹 all his power, the magic humming in his head and the rending, crushing bulk of coiled muscle and sharpened scales under his mimicry of skin, he hated cold in the way only fear could beget. He had dreaded it, in those few human years when it had crept through the temple walls in winter and left the fields barren, and then his blood had no longer run warm. Then he had layered cloak over cloak over cloak with numb fingers, fighting to trap body heat that was no longer there. Eventually, thoughts and limbs too sluggish to gather kindling, he had burned them and huddled so close that the sparks of the fire had hissed against his frostbitten face.

Here, on this outing useful only to observe his pupil further, an outing to yet another pointless Wu’s hiding place, it was cold. It was cold, and he had fallen, not fast enough to process the monks’ attack until it dropped him into one narrow, icy crevice of many on the mountain. They couldn’t have known —or maybe they had, and they were simply more vicious little wretches than he’d ever given them credit for. Already, movement was cumbersome, his body beginning the shift into dead weight. Sharp, hollow pain needled inside his chest; his heartbeat was beginning to ebb. Expression as frigid as the rest of his body, he exhaled a long, heavy breath and turned to the unlucky monk caught in her own cohort’s trap. He was terrified.

❝ A fire. ❞ The order was as unwieldy on his leaden tongue as it was emphatic. He had seen her fight, flames flickering in ribbons from her hands, her form bright with idle heat from across the small grotto even now. ❝ If you value your clean conscience, a fire. ❞

The woman averted her gaze, ashamed, after the stranger’s own left her ethereal countenance. She could have lived with every gift her demonic sire bestowed upon her: strength, the ability to communicate with animals and the dead, even immortality. What she could not embrace was her beauty. Imagine how tortuous it must be to crave love, true love, but entice others to mindless fawning, jealousy, and lust instead.

She listened carefully and, slowly, her hand fell to her side. There was no deception in his words. And, despite the pause she gave when he mentioned he was once human, she trusted him, to a degree. He was immortal so he would still understand her hardship. He would still understand her need to stay away from humans as much as possible.

“Wise of you,” the former queen retorted, relaxing her shoulders. “Very well. I will wait here and, when we are face to face, I will tell you all you wish to know. I only hope this will be reciprocated. You pique my curiosity.” And that was no easy feat for a woman who had already seen much, natural and supernatural.

She bowed her head, that same melancholic smile tugging at her lips. “Farewell… for now.”

—𝑻𝑬𝑳𝑬𝑷𝑶𝑹𝑻𝑨𝑻𝑰𝑶𝑵 to any point within Nowhere would have taken hardly the effort or the time to draw breath. His magic, not only Heylin but his, telltale as a voice or face, permeated the territory in nothing the physical could describe, his mind itself as another limb. Rather than thought, it was the urge that something should have been. His eyes should have been open, and so they were. His physical presence should have been at the border, and so it was. Or so it would be, at least, because Chase took far more than the effort and time to draw breath. He stood, and he watched his reflection frown in the glass, and only when he could no longer abide standing still, unwilling to pace like a caged thing, did he reach through his magic for where the forest met the scrubland and teleport.

Far enough from her only to place him out of the immediate radius of her blade, he continued to stand. It was no easier than expected. The same lovely face in more vivid focus (he could have been happy to allow that face against his hair or scales alike, could have treasured soft breath on his ear), the same weary smile stretching at her lips (he could have asked her, in speech or in soft, lowing rumbles, what had troubled her for so long, what he could do to soothe it), the same cloying sensation of presence (he could have done all in his extensive power for her, and then really might have torn his own skin in the shame of it). His arms remained crossed loosely over his chest, claws not so much as straining the fabric of his gloves. He’d left his glaive sheathed in the citadel armory; should he need to hurt her, tooth and nail would suffice.

❝ I cannot promise complete reciprocation. ❞ Of tooth and nail, the former gleamed with every word past his lips. His glamour came only with effort, and even then without perfection. ❝ But I doubt I would deny anything you have reason to ask. ❞ It was once again the truth—for all her thrall, she had done and said nothing disagreeable, not a seducer or beguiler by intention. Tentatively, tentatively, he understood. However much humanity she retained, however much she had possessed to begin with, it was not often Chase found the immortal and well-mannered. Tilting his chin the barest amount, he invited her wordlessly forward. ❝ Come. It’s late, and to bid you travel by night would be uncivil of me. ❞

—𝑻𝑯𝑬 dragons had begun to flee before Chase could reach their territories. It was still a strange thought, uncomfortable in its novelty: creatures of legend, centuries or millennia old, feared him. He supposed after watching enough of one’s kind die under blades or teeth, fear became common sense, but sense or not, it drew out the hunt unbearably. Where their lairs weren’t deserted, they were fortified, and where they weren’t fortified they were defended with raw, panicked zeal. The wounds sustained and distance traveled both ensured he would have to ration what he brewed.

On the day’s ration, he most likely could have forced himself into a mimic of a human form—but the road was rough, frequented by one brand of criminal or another, and a beast in the bordering woods was more likely to pass unaccosted than a man in the road. Not far ahead was a crossroads, the kind that drew merchants to linger more often than not. He would shift there. Talk and trade would do him some good after so long spent half-feral in tracking and hunting, and with that in mind he slowed, skirting the brush dividing the crossroads from the copse. Someone was there.

Even at a glance through the gaps in the underbrush, the man couldn’t have been mistaken for a merchant. Something about him made the sight of him, the scent of him, viscerally unpleasant. Something beyond the way his colors seemed off in the evening light, or the way his form, posture odd, radiated shy of another human’s heat, or the broad, toothy rictus of a grin across his sharp face. Still among the trees, Chase let his muzzle part, breath heaving in a soundless, uneasy growl and claws digging deep furrows into the leaf litter. His wounds had just begun to scab over from the last skirmish.

She hums to herself, thinking of the best strategy to act upon in this battle. So far, she’d been able to take down foe after foe with ease, but if she wanted to ensure victory, she had to be smart about how to attack and take out this last foe. A confident smile plays on her face as her thoughts come to a solution, the perfect strategy, and with a swipe or two of her finger, the battle comes to an end. The screen on her phone lights up with a victory banner and triumphant music plays. She gives a small cheer, then goes back to pressing at her screen.

Despite her game being what currently held most of her focus, she still had enough left over to sense approaching danger. But it doesn’t get much of a reaction out of her, just a huff and a slant on her lips. So much for seeking peace and fresh air outside of the temple.

Ears perk up, but her eyes don’t move away from her phone. She’s patient in assessing her situation. The low approaching growls alerts her of what it must be. Jungle cats. Not many. Two or three. If they attacked, it wouldn’t be a problem. She could handle it easy-peasy. The problem, however, was the person accompanying them. Eyes flicker to the side, gaze spotting their master through soft glows of sparse fireflies. She twists herself on the stump she’s on, legs uncrossing so her feet could settle on the grass beneath. She tilts her head as she locks eyes, looking more unamused than annoyed, and more annoyed than surprised.

“Am I supposed to feel scared now?” she asks.

—𝑯𝑬'𝑺 not surprised to find an overt lack of fear in her expression, her voice, and even her posture. Familiarity has a way of breeding comfort, especially in humans. He hadn’t taken the many other opportunities he’d had to wound her some way, even kill her, so why take this one? Even at his side, his warriors growl out of reflex rather than any real threat. For prey, they give no warning in the silence before they pounce. For rivals, they snarl with raised hackles and bared teeth. For her, they rumble softly, lips twitching upwards but never fully curling, a warning of his power and theirs: we could hurt you, if we chose, and if not us then our master. Tread with as much caution as respect.

Chase hushes them with a faint rumble of his own, barely carrying to human ears over the muggy night air. The same magic that binds them in four legs and furred hides does have a tendency to make them overzealous about these things. At a twitch of his fingers, they hang back as he steps forwards in the slow beginnings of a circle around the stump, and his eyes flicker to the thing in her hands before her face. The newest incarnation of a cell phone, no doubt—too bright and busy for him, needling at already- sharpened senses. One human-carved niche of many he no longer fits into.

❝ Your decision. ❞ He can’t tell her what to feel any more than he can tell her what to do. She’s a game piece with her own side of the board; the best he can hope for is to learn her rules. His eyes finally rise to her face, the flicker of color in his vision telling him they’ve flashed a crocodile’s red in the muted light. ❝ But fear does make these things more difficult than they ought to be, ❞ he says, and smiles, because she knows better than to trust him stone-faced. ❝ Civil conversation isn’t beyond us, is it? ❞

Chase might not joke often, but that’s not to say he never jokes. he just prefers to wait for what he considers the right moment, both because he places importance in the gravity of situations and because he finds that using humor sparingly increases its effect. when it does present itself, his sense of humor is dry, usually at the expense of others he feels deserve it: for example, his “very small hands” comment towards Jack, and later, parroting back the “who would you rather be right now, you or me” question. in the same vein, he enjoys toying with those he views as not deserving of his full effort, especially those who don’t realize he’s toying with them. in the rare event that he is around someone he respects and holds some measure of affection for, he might make the occasional stealth pun (but only a stealth pun, and only a good one. he has standards).

he’s not the type to openly brag about himself, but he’s still very self-centered and very proud of himself. he doesn’t view his achievements as separate from his inherent character—rather, he views his personal, inherent qualities as the means and prerequisites for him achieving anything. he has a strong compulsion to work, in part cultivated by the temple he lived in as a human, but not in order to prove his worth, in order to do his worth justice. he would view an excess of inactivity as wasting his own potential. stemming from this, he rarely does anything for the sake of someone other than himself. he enjoys when others notice how powerful, intelligent, good-looking, etc. he is, but he doesn’t need it, and the things he dislikes about himself are almost all from his self-imposed standards.

in short, no. Chase spent the majority of his human life training at the Xiaolin Temple, where romantic or sexual pursuits weren’t exactly encouraged—assuming the Xiaolin Temple is an analogue to the similarly-pronounced real-life Shaolin Temple, he would have likely followed an early or anachronistic form of Chan Buddhism, and as a result his commitment to a monk’s vows overruled any attraction he felt. beyond just commitment, he was much more personally focused on self-improvement, whether in relation to martial arts, magic, or meditation, and even if he had been able and willing to act on his attraction, he prefers not to put on any sort of show for people. he might have been indirect, possibly even coy, but not explicitly flirty. after losing his humanity, he didn’t really get any more flirtatious; even without his monk’s vows, he had a new determination not to be swayed by what he viewed as his reptilian brain’s “animal instinct”, so he withheld from sexual relationships even more fiercely. romantic relationships weren’t so much of a problem, since after losing his humanity, he also lost the ability to get crushes and the motivation to form any deeper bonds that could lead to romance in the first place. overall, he considers relationships unnecessary and regards flirting as a means of manipulation to be dishonorable (and therefore beneath him).
