Internally we are finding that the amount of light on the working plane can be doubled by the mirrored light shelves. Inevitably this varies significantly on the amount of direct sun available outside, but this relative variation is positive because it gives balance to the internal / external light level ratio.
We use stainless steel carabiners to allow for a simple angle adjustment. The mirrors are pitched towards the office at the moment, allowing the indirect bounce to ingress deeper into the office.
Ideally, this adjustment would all be automated, allowing for constant adjustment relating to the azimuth of the sun through a day and throughout the year. However, this is a little beyond our current budget.
We now have all three sets of mirrors mounted to the building and fully operational. On a sunny mid-April day like today they are very effective at increasing daylight levels and daylight penetration into our office.
We have rolled out the window reveal mirror treatment to all the windows on the South side of the office. It works very nicely, adding slots of reflected light onto the ceiling, with added interest with the dichroic filters and prism effect from the mirror edging.

We have attached strips of dichroic film to the window reveals. The reflected light on the ceiling is really lovely; a shimmery blue. It feels like we have our own Northern Lights inside the office.
Today we reviewed the daylight contribution to the office by the external mirrors. The two images show the mirrors in use and the mirrors retracted.
Obviously the mirrors create bright frames of light on the ceiling, but indirectly we measured a 270lux increase in light on the working plane (both measurements were taken out of direct illumination).
The mirrored window frames are refracting daylight into some lovely rainbows across the office. Another positive secondary effect of daylight, as people I'm not sure we ever stop enjoying rainbows.
The opposite side of the office is benefitting from the bounced light on the ceiling (at midday). The double letter box strip is the light that is bouncing directly from the external mirrors, there’s a lot of visual noise surrounding the strips which is quite delicate, and softening.
Inside the office at midday: There is not a significant amount of light reaching the ceiling directly inside the office because the light is bouncing to the opposite side of the space. What we are seeing are some lovely prismatic rainbow effects from the mirror edges, possibly from the window frame mirrors we have installed.
This is the theory. The mirrors are adjustable to account for the height of the sun in the sky.

So, unsurprising 1244lux outside doesn't do a lot for the light level on the desk (a mere 5lux increase), but the introduction of a little daylight on the ceiling is welcoming, it certainly gives a lift to the ceiling.
It is worth remembering that it’s mid January and the sky appears to be one continuous cloud. Also, we still only have one operational mirror. Things are going to get better (as they say).
The midday sun is delivering just 1244lux onto our mirror today, it’s a gloomy day when the midday light level is akin to a shopping experience in Tescos. It’s warmer in Tescos too, so perhaps that’s a better option today.
