Bright, joyful childhood up until age 9: he received unconditional love, laughter, play, just being a child.
At 9, everything shifts: his parents begin his Malfoy heir training → from then on, no more unconditional affection.
Love becomes a reward: every smile, every bit of pride from his parents depends on his achievements.
His identity revolves around desperately earning their recognition.
His real friends are Theodore, Blaise, Pansy; Crabbe and Goyle are still around, but more like “camp guys” than emotional anchors.
Obsession with Harry Potter starts at age 6–7, long before Hogwarts. Harry is the mythical hero who defeated Voldemort.
When Draco finally meets him, he wants to be his friend. Harry’s rejection twists that admiration into resentment → feeding an even stronger obsession.
His insults toward Hermione partly mask his pain: she embodies everything he fails to be. Because of her, his father deems him “disappointing,” no matter how hard he tries.
His whole arc is about one desperate need: to be worthy of love.
