rant about the way celebrities (miss)use their reach on social media
I just donât get why celebrities donât understand the responsibility of having millions of followers. When you are this popular, social media is no longer a way to âconnectâ with your fans and to promote yourself, itâs an unprecedented way to influence people. You have several stadiums worth of people waiting to hear what you have to say, and you can speak to all of them at once. So this bullshit about how hashtags donât save lives is...well, bullshit.
Todayâs younger generation is so impressionable, so quick to âfollowâ their leader, and yet so full of ignorance-fueled hatred. They are ready to bring out the worst of humanity within themselves in order to prove their role modelâs point. Having this power and wasting it, or worse - using it to only advance yourself at the expense of others is bordering on criminal.
Imagine if a celebrity with this kind of pull tweeted #BlackLivesMatter. Yes, many of the inherently racist fans would respond with all lives and hateful messages, but Iâm talking about the ones who would go like âwhy are they posting it? it must mean something to them. I must join, I must know why itâs important to my precious cupcakeâ. Thus engaging young people in a much needed conversation.Â
I mean, thatâs the reason why so many charities involve celebrities - they pull a lot of eyes and ears, a lot of attention to their causes. Not only that, but many times fans donate to their chosen cause (even without the celebrityâs explicit call for it). Imagine how much a social movement, that only aims at educating people and decreasing violence, can benefit from having celebrities with that big of a reach on its side.
Iâm not naive, I know that one hashtag wonât sway millions of people, but even if it does one - thatâd mean one less insult, one less racial slur, one less minute of fear for someone and thatâs important, you canât ignore that kind of power.
So yeah, a hashtags might actually save lives, you know ... butterfly effect and all.Â
