The story describes a fictional small town which observes—as do many other communities, both large and small, throughout contemporary America—an annual ritual is known as "the lottery". The purpose of the lottery is a ritualistic sacrifice in order to secure better crops. The people of the town are blindly following a tradition for the sake of following a tradition.

I made use of negative space so that it shows a human suffering as someone makes a vote. I wanted to show that for blindly following the tradition, one person each year suffers and gets sacrificed.
