As much as he hated it, the crimson demon knew her words to be true. As ultimately foolish as that purple mortal was (and how easily he was tricked in the first place), this vessel was not meant for him. Not that it mattered. He’d get his own body back soon.
When Astra brought up how ultimately helpless he demon was, Alizarin scowled and a red aura flared around him briefly. He was about to angrily retort when she kept talking, and he shut up. Well, this was interesting.
“You are legitimately interested in assisting me with this endeavor? What possible benefit could you get?
I do want to hear your terms, though I know they will include me harming this vessel. The mortal wore bandages for weeks after our first fight. Pathetic.”
✩~ “What benefit? Can’t a witch just want to help an unfortunate soul out of the
kindness of her heart?”
... No. He was right, she had reasons for doing this. Alright, she would get to it.
“In Primp’s library, there’s quite an interesting diary. It speaks of some adventurers
deciding to play a prank on a demon. Supposedly this demon lived in a great
castle and had all the books he could want. But he could not resist reading
whatever he had in front of him... So they gave him a cursed book that when
opened, ripped the reader’s soul from his body. Sound familiar?”
It wasn’t hard to put two and two together. Cursed books with such powerful magic weren’t all that common, after all. Alizarin must be that demon, trapped inside the book and searching for his body even after all this time. Which begged the question of whether that body was somehow immortal... Well, whatever. It sounded as though Alizarin had already located it before and just needed help getting back into it. If he was sure, she wasn’t going to disagree with him.
“... I want access to your sealed castle, and to the knowledge you have there. I
want to read your magic books and learn their spells. That’s what I want. Share
those things with me and I’ll help you be whole again, Alizarin.”
Not only would she benefit, gaining a new repository of knowledge and potential gratitude, but Klug would be free of the risk of being possessed again too, and maybe they could at least keep that book shut from now on. Everyone won! At least, that was what Astra currently thought. She didn’t see disadvantages to helping out. And besides... The witch leaned in, softly whispering the next words.
"... I can't help but sympathize a bit with your situation." Just a little.
