Thirteen months ago, Superman died.
It was a regular day in Metropolis. People were evacuated from New Troy, many electing to go to the temporary shelters in Park Ridge. Kids celebrated being let out of school early. Others clamored for a picture of Superman in action.
Within thirty minutes of the conflict, Superman had been killed. There was no more celebration. The cameras stopped. All was quiet. It was like the whole world was mourning along with Metropolis.
Twelve months ago, Jason Todd was murdered by the Joker in an internationally livestreamed event. In the same fell swoop, Gotham found out that Bruce Wayne's youngest foster son had been leaping around the rooftops as Robin. Bruce Wayne withdrew from the public eye amidst accusations of neglectful parenting. Batman grew more violent and the GCPD publicly severed their working relationship with him. The Batsignal was retired.
Eleven months ago, the first of three mysterious teleportation devices appeared right to the Star City Youth Center. Dubbed the Starconnect Tunnels, two more devices showed up in Southside Metropolis and on Central City, Ohio. The government closed off the areas, reminders of the 11/2 Dimensional Incursion Event still echo in the population.
Mysteriously, however, the government opens the tunnels up to public, monitored access just one month later. For the first time, for some of America’s poorest urban populations, they could travel freely across America.
Since then...
The Joker hasn't been seen. Anywhere.
Green Arrow is investigating what’s widely believed to be a conspiracy theory: people are disappearing after using the Starconnect Tunnels.
Harvey Dent and Lex Luthor have both been elected mayor of their respective cities, all the while stressing unity and support between Gotham and Metropolis.
Wonder Woman has been stationed in Metropolis per the Justice League's request.
Lex Luthor has debuted LexCorp's Super Team, comprising of Supergirl, Steel and Superboy.
And last Thursday, on the anniversary of that team and the anniversary of Robin's death, Superman woke up outside of Wayne Tower, naked and confused.
