Just pointing one thing out: Fandom always favored non-canon pairings over canon ones. If Steve/Bucky becomes canon, we’re going see a precipitous drop in Steve/Bucky material.

So, give Steve a boyfriend, just don’t let it be Bucky so I can keep enjoying all the Steve/Bucky fanfic, because nothing seems kills fandom faster than canonization.

The reason I hate bottom!Bucky is two fold:

1) Bottom too often gets equated with submissive and consequently, the reason Bucky gets stuck on the bottom is because fandom sees Bucky as submissive, thus bottom.

2) Bucky was a victim, thus fandom equates victimization as submissive (due to mind control no less), and essentially portray him as a submissive because of his mind wiped Winter Soldier persona. Then, following point 1, assign Bucky as the “bottom” in a relationship.

This is problematic, because it ignores the fact that Bucky, prior to brainwashing, is a pro-active person who pushes back against expectations. He sided with Steve when no one else was willing to give Steve a second glance. He actively seeks out ways to engage Steve in double dates and visits to science/technology expos to distract him from his enlistment obsession. Bucky chose to follow Steve back into war. Even after the Winter Soldier debacle, he actively sought out information about who he was. He went to the museum, wrote notes to himself, researched multiple sources. He didn’t sit around waiting to be saved, he actively tried to fix himself. It absolutely does a disservice to Bucky to keep portraying him as this person who needs saving. And it’s doubly problematic when it comes in the form of making him sexually submissive and in need of dat all American dick, because healing cock trope is a trope for a reason.

I’m just saying that when Bucky is lying bruised and bloodied on the ground, his first instinct was still to distract Iron Man from blasting Steve with his repulsor. The entire dynamic between Steve and Bucky has always been Bucky as the caregiver, even when Bucky himself wasn’t in the best of conditions. That even the pinnacle of idealized masculinity that is Steve still needs someone to take care of him from time to time, and that person who gives the care is Bucky. But 9 out of 10 fics that designates Bucky as the “bottom” completely ignores all of this and just assigns Bucky as the one who needs care taking when Bucky’s role, with respect to Steve, has always been the care giver.

The Messy World of Fan Art and Copyright - Plagiarism Today

Fan fiction and fan art are a constant subject of copyright strife. Here's a quick rundown of the issues and how to avoid them.

Seriously. Getting really tired of fan entitlement. If I actually wanted to ruin Steve/Bucky fan artists, all I have to do is send all of those commission requests to Disney and let their lawyers handle them. But why the fuck would I want to do that? Just recognize that pretty much all of fan culture is working in a legal gray area and we are only allowed to continue because we aren’t trying to make claims or profits or asking for compensation.

And MCU fandom is one that is on especially shaky ground, because Disney is one litigious company that will sue anyone (including daycare centers) for using their intellectual properties. For fuck’s sake, stop acting like you have any legal ground to stand on and we can all secretly enjoy our squees in peace.

(Or keep yelling at the top of your lungs about how you deserve compensation and we can all go down in one giant pile of nasty court cases. Sorry, fandom police, but real police doesn’t give a shit about your entitlement.)

people who are gross literally never like to admit that they are. no one is telling you that youre not allowed to have a preference. idk why people feel like theyre being bullied and harassed when people are perfectly nice when telling them that they are being gross. YOURE ALLOWED TO HAVE A PREFERENCE. but when you literally are so focused on who tops and who bottoms to the point of having to defend your opinions/put it in your bio and url and your about mes but act like the victim when someone tells you that you arent right you need to take a long look in the mirror. especially when mlm are telling you that you are being gross.  isnt it funny that it’s usually women that are so fixated on that kind of thing? ive never seen a man care so much about who tops and bottoms in this fandom. anyways, those people are never going to change and theyre always going to act like theyre the victim so there is literally no point in talking to them.

Unpopular opinion: Maybe, they’re responding badly probably because people use words like “gross” and won’t shut up until they get an acknowledgement of grossness?

I have yet to see fans being respectful in pointing out that “hey, maybe the way you’re writing/drawing/talking about this pairing is a bit problematic because you’re assuming that 1) there are actually designated tops and bottoms when most gay men report that they switch things up, 2) gay men who do have a positional sex preference don’t associate their sex position with behavioral characteristics, 3) the consistent use of top/bottom dynamic in a heteronormative way perpetuates the objectification and fetishization of an already marginalized group, is that what you wish to happen with your works?”

Instead, all I ever see are people yelling about how “you’re being homophobic” or “you’re a misogynist” or “you’re a bad person for having a preference”. Maybe the person is tired of explaining themselves to a new person every day and hoping that by slathering their opinion all over the place, people will finally get the point that they are perfectly aware of the problems inherent in slash fiction, but they aren’t causing harm to real people and aren’t actually practicing what they write and sees a clear delineation between fiction and real life, so get off their case already? Maybe they’re not activists and they just want to indulge in their id in peace.

Or maybe they actually are gross in which case they don’t give a shit that they’re being gross and simply enjoy watching the rest of fandom foam at the mouth over fictional characters. That’s possible too.
