Latin Subjunctives

Let's learn Latin subjunctives!

If it’s subjunctive, you go with “if I were” - in other words if it’s hypothetical - as in “if I were king of the world.”

However if it’s something that’s actually possible you say “if I was” - for example “if I was wrong, I apologize” - meaning there is a chance that you were in fact wrong.

Subjunctive Mood:

The subjunctive expresses an element of uncertainty, (e.g. a wish, desire, doubt or hope).

e.g. 'vocem'-I may call, or I might call

What is the Subjunctive Mood?

There are 3 moods: Indicative, Imperative, and Subjunctive!  

The subjunctive mood is hard.  In English, we use subjunctive without knowing it!  "can, must, might, could, and would," all are indicators of the subjunctive in English.

Amo, amare, amavi, amatus  (3rd plural)

Present Active: ament  Imperfect Active: amarent Perfect Active: amaverint Pluperfect Active: amavissent Present Passive: amentur Imperfect Passive: amarentur Perfect Active: amati sint  Pluperfect Active: amati essent
